Tokat Province is an epicenter for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in Turkey. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of Rickettsia conorii and to clarify the epidemiological similarities between CCHFV and R. conorii in Tokat Province. Materials and methods: The prevalence of antibodies reactive with R. conorii was examined by ELISA in 364 sera, 151 of which were seropositive for CCHFV. Results: The overall prevalence of antibodies reactive with R. conorii was 36.81%. Prevalence Of Latent Prostate Cancer And Prostatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia In İstanbul, Turkey: An Autopsy Study, Nusret Akpolat, Yalçin Büyük, İbrahi̇m Uzun, İlhan Geçi̇t, Gülay Kurnaz

To investigate the frequency of latent prostatic carcinoma (PCa) and prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) in the Turkish population. Materials and methods: PCa and PIN were evaluated in 116 male autopsy cases in which the cause of death was nontumoral. All patients were Turkish, living in İstanbul, and aged 40-79 years. Results: The prevalence of PCa was 19.8% and the decade rates (decades 5-8) were 9.5%, 12.5%, 18.8%, and 37%, respectively (P < 0.011). The rates of high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) were 33.3%, 31.3%, 56.3%, and 25.9% for decades 5-8, respectively (P > 0.05). A total of 68.4% of PCa cases were HGPIN. There was a statistically significant correlation among HGPIN, PCa, and Gleason scores (P < 0.002). Conclusion: The prevalence of latent PCa in the Turkish population is very high (19.7%). In order to determine latent PCa cases, males over 40 years of age must be screened more strictly.

To compare the tissue damage, operation times, blood loss, short-term postoperative complication rates, and hospitalization durations of abdominal hysterectomies performed due to benign gynecological conditions using the LigaSure vessel sealing system (LVSS) and conventional suture ligation. Materials and methods: Patients were prospectively enrolled in LVSS (TAH-L group, 22 cases) and suture ligation (TAH-S group, 31 cases) groups. To compare anesthetic practice, perioperative complications, and clinical outcomes of endovascular coiling versus neurosurgical clipping in our university hospital over a 2-year period. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective review of the hospital charts of 30 patients with cerebral aneurysms treated by endovascular coiling compared with 52 patients treated by neurosurgical clipping. Information including demographics, preoperative neurological status, timing of intervention, anesthetic management, duration of the postoperative intensive care and hospital stay, intra- and postoperative complications, and clinical outcome at hospital discharge were compared and analyzed. P < 0.05 was considered to be significant. Results: The surgical group had greater consumption of certain anesthetic agents whereas the endovascular group had more frequent episodes of hypertension (>30% more than the baseline measurement) during the procedure. To investigate the necessity and efficacy of immunotherapy in children with allergic eye disease. Materials and methods: The study included 57 patients with allergic eye disease who were followed by the Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Pediatrics at Adnan Menderes University Hospital. Oxidative Stress Status Of Individuals Involved In Traffic Accidents*, Bora Özdemi̇r, Atilhan Kaya, Özgür Söğüt, Hali̇l Kaya, Mehmet Tahi̇r Gökdemi̇r, Osman Celbi̇ş

To investigate the role of the oxidative stress status of drivers involved in traffic accidents as a risk factor. Materials and methods: Twenty-six drivers and 28 passengers involved in traffic accidents and 31 healthy control drivers and 30 healthy control pedestrians were enrolled in the present study. The total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS) were measured in blood samples. Results: The mean value of the TOS level in drivers involved in traffic accidents was significantly higher than that of the control pedestrians (P =< 0.05). The mean value of the TAS level in passengers involved in traffic accidents was significantly lower than that of the control drivers and pedestrians (P =< 0.001 and P =< 0.01, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study assessing the oxidative markers of individuals involved in a traffic accident compared with a control group. The results reveal that involvement in a traffic accident has an effect on oxidative markers. However, further studies are required in order to use the oxidative stress status of drivers involved in traffic accidents as a marker for estimating the accident risk.

To compare and detect possible differences between the digit length and digit length ratios in left- and right-handed female and male students. One of the cerebral hemispheres is dominant over the other. Knowing a person’s dominant hemisphere can be a useful guide in some personal activities. Aim: To investigate the effects of intraabdominal hypertension (IAH) on adrenal glands. Materials and methods: Forty male Wistar albino rats were divided into 4 groups: the control group, sham control group, and 2 study groups. In the study groups, the animals were subjected to IAH of up to 20-25 mmHg for 3 h. At the end of the study, blood samples were collected for cortisol analysis and adrenal gland samples were extracted via laparatomy for histopathological examination. Aim: To investigate whether Turkish children with celiac disease (CD) show dental enamel defects (DEDs), recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), teeth missing, and xerostomia, and to compare the results with age- and sex-matched healthy children. Materials and methods: The oral cavity was explored in 81 patients with CD (mean age 8.7 ± 3.7 years; age range 2.5 to 17 years) and in 20 healthy controls. Enamel defects, teeth missing, RAS, and xerostomia were established. Results: Forty-three (53.1%) celiac patients and 5 (25%) control subjects had enamel defects. Aim: To evaluate the possible roles of phospholipase C, protein kinase C, and endothelin-converting enzyme on contractions induced by ethanol (164 mM) in isolated gastric fundal strips of mice. Aim: To study the combination treatment consisting of half-dose verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT) and an intravitreal injection of ranibizumab as a potential treatment for patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Materials and methods: Six eyes of 6 patients were studied with fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography to diagnose the maculopathy, monitor the detachments, and localize the choroidal hyperpermeability of the disorder. Aim: To examine the possible preventive effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on biofilm formation in Staphylococcus epidermidis strains, which cause very important problems such as implant-associated infections in hospitalized and immunocompromised patients worldwide. Materials and methods: The effects of varying concentrations of NAC on the formation of biofilm by 28 strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis was investigated spectrophotometrically by micro-ELISA assay. Results: Significant differences in biofilm formation in the presence of various NAC concentrations were found in 15 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis and 13 methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus epidermidis strains (P < 0.05). Conclusion: It was found that slime formation was decreased due to the increased concentrations of the NAC treatments. Based on these findings, it is possible to use NAC as an antibiofilm agent on medical devices or in catheter lock solutions to prevent colonization and implant-associated infections.

Aim: To assess the efficiency of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on L. tropica, which is the major causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Turkey. Materials and methods: The effects of HBO on Leishmania tropica promastigote and amastigote forms were studied at a pressure of 2.5 atmosphere absolute (ata). We examined the cytotoxic effect of HBO on promastigotes using the trypan blue exclusion test and the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) dye-reduction assay. Aim: To evaluate the relation between cortical and medullary peritubular capillaries (PTCs) and scarring. There are presently no studies about medullary PTCs in renal allograft biopsies. Materials and methods: Nonprotocol allograft biopsies were evaluated and 41 with adequate medullary and cortical tissues were selected. Vascular structures were counted separately at the medulla and cortex on anti-CD34 stained sections. Other histopathological and clinical findings were retrieved from the patient files. To determine the features and clinical course of bradycardia in patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). Materials and methods: Between May 2002 and September 2010, a total of 380 patients with CCHF were followed. All patients who had transient bradycardia during this period were included in the study. Results: A total of 14 patients had an episode of bradycardia. All patients were in sinus rhythm. Three patients had clinical symptoms of bradycardia; atropine was administered to them. To investigate the peripheral blood levels of B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA/CD272) on T cells and its role in Behçet disease (BD), and to define the role of inhibitory receptors on BD. Materials and methods: Included in this study were 25 patients with BD and 20 healthy control subjects, matched for age and sex. Results: CD4+CD272+ (P < 0.001) and CD3+CD272+ (P < 0.001) T cell levels were significantly higher in BD patients (active and remission) compared to the healthy controls. However, there was no difference between the active patients and those in remission in terms of CD4+CD272+ T cells, while CD3+CD272+ T cell levels were significantly higher in active-phase BD patients compared to patients in the remission phase (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Further functional studies could be implemented to investigate the effectiveness of the present research parameter in the diagnosis or follow-up of certain diseases similar to BD and with obscure etiology, as well as its contribution to immune dysregulation of BD. BTLA can additionally modulate T cell response in BD on different inflammatory areas and it can be upregulated in BD because of T cell activation. The results of the present study indicate that BTLA expression on CD4+ Th (T helper) cells might play a limiting role on the inflammation at peripheral sites or organs in BD.

The efficiencies of ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) elevation were compared in terms of avoidance of prostate biopsy in this study. Materials and methods: Included in the study were 43 men with PSA levels of >=3.5 ng/mL. They were randomized into either ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin groups for a 3-week course. PSA and free PSA levels were measured before and after the antibiotherapy. The patients in whom PSA remained >=3.5 ng/mL after therapy underwent biopsy.
