The aim of this study was to evaluate shoulder functions after neck dissection with preservation of the spinal accessory nerve by objective physical examination, electromyographic findings, and subjective patient complaints, and also to investigate the effect of the type of neck dissection. To analyze the characteristics of patients transferred by air ambulance in the eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. Materials and methods: We retrospectively evaluated the records of patients transferred by air ambulance between January 2010 and December 2010. Demographics and medical data of the patients, geographic conditions, and flight duration data were all analyzed. Results: A total of 241 patients were included in the study, of whom 51% were men and 49% were women. The majority of the patients were between 0 and 1 year old (40.2%). We aim ed to predict mortality in stroke patients by using multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks. Materials and methods: A data set consisting of 584 stroke patients was analyzed using MLP neural networks. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between liver damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl_4) and adenosine deaminase (ADA), 5'-nucleotidase (5'NT), xanthine oxidase (XO) enzyme activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The effect of stobadine on purine metabolism was also evaluated. Materials and methods: This study measured the effect of CCl_4 on ADA, 5'NT, XO enzyme activities, and MDA levels, and measured the histopathologic changes in liver cells. The purpose of this study was to evaluate cardiopulmonary responses of individuals with different fitness levels according to predetermined rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scores and to investigate the correspondence between the heart rate reserve percentage (HRR%) and the RPE scale by using fit and unfit subjects. Materials and methods: RPE scores of sedentary volunteers were recorded at different HRR% levels during graded exercise tests on a cycle ergometer. Following the tests, subjects were divided into 2 groups, high metabolic equivalent [(MET) MET >= 10; n = 9] and low MET (MET < 10; n = 11), according to maximal O_2 uptakes (VO_{2max}). Participants performed the steady-state exercise test at the 13th-14th level of their perceived exertion 48 h after the first test. Variance and regression analyses were performed. Results: For all HRR% values, RPE levels were not different between groups. During the graded exercise test, perceived exertion was significantly higher in the low MET group than in the high MET group. Predetermined RPE score results were significantly greater in the low MET group with relative O2 consumption as compared to the high MET group (P < 0.05-0.001). Conclusion: In individuals with different VO_{2max} levels, exercise intensity can be prescribed using HRR% or RPE scale methods while adjusting for individual differences in oxygen consumption.

We retrospectively evaluated 6 cases to explore the role of curative pancreaticoduodenectomy and endoscopic resection of ampulla of Vater tumors. Six patients diagnosed with stage 1 ampullary tumors at Ankara University Hospital between January 1994 and September 2009 were analyzed retrospectively. The prevalence of pterygium in a hospital-based population was analyzed in Ankara, in central Turkey. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective, nonrandomized, and consecutive case study. The medical records of 6470 consecutive patients aged 40 and above who attended the general ophthalmology clinic during a 12-month period from May 2008 to May 2009 were evaluated for the presence of pterygium. Results: The overall prevalence of pterygium was found to be 3.0 % (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.9 to 3.8). The purposes of this study were to evaluate the rate of biochemical recurrence among patients who underwent radical prostatectomy due to localized prostate cancer, assess the risk factors of biochemical recurrence, and investigate its relation with hyaluronidase-1 (HYAL-1). To investigate the improvement in electrocardiogram (ECG) interpreting skills after a standardized ECG interpreting program as a continuous medical education activity among primary care physicians. Materials and methods: The study was conducted in Turkey between December 2006 and October 2010. Out of the 81 provinces in Turkey, 17 were randomly selected and all physicians were invited to take the course on a voluntary basis and in total 798 physicians agreed to participate. Although the left-sided double-lumen tube (DLT) is preferred, the RDLT is necessary in some circumstances. To investigate the patterns of penetrating thoracic injuries and techniques used in their management, and to contribute further data on the knowledge of penetrating thoracic trauma. Materials and methods: The records were reviewed of 99 patients seen at our thoracic surgery hospital over a 4-year period. Results: The group comprised 90 male (90.9%) and 9 female (9.1%) patients, with a mean age of 29.0 years. As chemokines are involved in the regulation of immune responses and inflammatory reactions, this study aimed to investigate the serum levels of some chemokines to determine whether they play roles in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease (BD). The present study was designed to investigate the relationship among the serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity, lipid levels, and thyroid hormone status in patients with hyperthyroidism. Materials and methods: The study group comprised 30 patients with primary hyperthyroidism and 18 normal healthy controls who were matched for age and sex. Serum PON-1 activity was determined by spectrophotometric methods. Results: Serum PON-1 activity was found to be lower in patients compared to controls (P < 0.05). Free triiodothyronine (T3) and free thyroxine (T4) levels were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 respectively). Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and total cholesterol values were found to be lower in patients than in the controls (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 respectively). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were found to be decreased in patients compared to controls (P < 0.005). Triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). Serum PON-1 activity was found to be negatively correlated with free T4 levels (r = -0.324, P < 0.05) and positively correlated with total cholesterol (r = 0.330, P < 0.05) and TSH levels (r = 0.577, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our PON-1 results show that there is decreased antioxidant defense in patients with hyperthyroidism. Therefore, we think that effective antioxidant therapy to increase PON-1 activity may be a therapeutic option in patients with hyperthyroidism.

To analyze the results of our experience with a combined procedure via off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCABG) and carotid endarterectomy (CEA) retrospectively. Materials and methods: Eighty-four patients underwent OPCABG and CEA concomitantly between 1998 and 2011. Thirty (35.7%) patients had a cardiac history of myocardial infarction (MI), 13 (15.6%) had unstable angina (USAP), and 27 (32.1%) had USAP together with MI, whereas 14 (16.6%) were asymptomatic. Forty-two (50%) patients showed no neurological symptoms, 20 (23.8%) had transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), 21 (25%) suffered from stroke, and 1 (1.2%) experienced both.
