How perfect a food or meal is depends on hedonic and nutritional factors. The hedonic component is influenced by all of our 5 senses. In addition, social, environmental, and cognitive/experiential factors may have an effect on our attitude towards a food. On the other hand, nutrient composition and content, as well as bioavailability, determine how nutritionally perfect a food is. So, does the perfect food exist? What makes a food or a meal perfect? This paper will try to answer these questions by briefly discussing the most important variables.

To determine the effect of omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid supplementation on plasma orexin A, plasma fatty acids, and anthropometric measurements in patients with narcolepsy. Materials and methods: The study was performed on 17 males with narcolepsy and 14 healthy males between the ages of 21-55. An n-3 fatty acid supplement of 1.4 g/day was administered to the groups for 2 months. To validate patient responses to imatinib mesylate, which induces hematologic and cytogenetic remission and, consequently, modifies the progression of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Materials and methods: Between January 2006 and July 2009, 31 patients with chronic-phase CML were treated with imatinib therapy in the hematology unit of Atatürk University Medical Faculty Training Hospital. Imatinib treatment was begun at the standard dose of 400 mg/day, as either first-line or second-line therapy. To evaluate the effect of delivery route on birth complications and related costs in fetal macrosomia (>4000 g). Materials and methods: Patient and newborn hospital records of 365 macrosomic deliveries (≥4000 g) were retrospectively analyzed. Of these deliveries, 189 newborns weighed between 4000 and 4249 g (Group I), and 176 were between 4250 and 4500 g (Group II). The effects of mode of delivery on birth complications were evaluated and a simple cost-effectiveness analysis was performed. To assess the antimicrobial susceptibility of Brucella melitensis strains in our region. Brucellosis is a common disease in Turkey. Moreover, difficulties are encountered in the treatment process, such as long-lasting therapy, relapses, and side effects of drugs. Hence, novel treatment approaches and the susceptibility of current antibiotics are vital. Materials and methods: Thirty-four Brucella spp. isolated from blood samples of patients with brucellosis were included. Minimal inhibitory concentrations for tetracycline, rifampicin, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ceftriaxone, and levofloxacin were detected by broth microdilution. To determine the relationship between skin prick test results and allergic symptoms and to discover which symptom or symptoms are more commonly associated with the skin prick test. Materials and methods: Of the 1462 patients with a prediagnosis of allergic rhinitis (AR) who underwent the skin prick test, 495 subjects completed the symptoms inquiry form and were included in the study. To study the effect of undifferentiated bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) on peripheral nerve regeneration using a rat sciatic nerve regeneration model. In recent years, cell transplantation has become the focus of attention, and reliable outcomes have been achieved in regeneration of the sciatic nerve. Materials and methods: A 10-mm sciatic nerve defect was bridged using an inside-out vein graft (IOVG) filled with undifferentiated BMSCs (2 × 107 cells/mL). To contribute to the literature about the anatomy of the dorsal ulnar artery and to clarify the anastomosis pattern between the descending branch of this artery and the vascular network of the hand. The distally pedicled dorsoulnar forearm flap can be a useful surgical flap for repairing hand and wrist defects. The vascular pedicle of this flap is the dorsal cutaneous branch of the ulnar artery (the dorsal ulnar artery). To determine the distribution of macrolide resistance genes as well as resistance rates in isolated Streptococcus pneumoniae strains from the southern Marmara region of Turkey. Materials and methods: Antimicrobial resistance rates and MIC values were determined by the E-test method in 300 Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates that were isolated from clinical samples. Resistance genes were determined by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method in erythromycin-resistant strains. Results: It was found that 11.4% of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates were resistant to macrolides. The penicillin MIC value was >=0.12 µg/mL in 23% of the strains and 2 µg/mL in 2% of the strains. To characterize common beta-lactamase genes and the role of integrons in beta-lactam antibiotic resistance among multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa strains isolated from intensive care units in Turkey. Materials and methods: After the examination of 67 P. aeruginosa isolates, 14 were found to be resistant to all of the tested beta-lactams and aminoglycosides. These 14 strains were studied to characterize the beta-lactamases and related integrons. To compare the mean platelet volume (MPV) of pregnant women with mild glycemic disorders with that of healthy pregnant women to find whether these disorders are risk factors for future cardiovascular disease. Materials and methods: Fasting blood glucose and 50-g oral glucose loading were measured. A 100-g, 3-h oral glucose tolerance test was done when plasma glucose was ≥140 mg/dL, following a loading test. To evaluate the radiological findings of 160 adult patients with tuberculous meningitis (TBM). Materials and methods: Using a standard data collection form, 160 patients with TBM who had been followed for 11 years were assessed retrospectively. Cranial imaging results were obtained by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and pulmonary findings were obtained by chest X-ray and CT. To determine if the functional Val108/158Met polymorphism causes a tendency toward alcohol addiction in Turkish cases. This polymorphism of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been associated with many psychiatric disorders, as well as with alcoholism. Materials and methods: The allele and genotype associations of the Val108/158Met polymorphism in 110 Turkish alcoholics and 330 healthy subjects were investigated, constituting our study and control groups, by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. To determine if hypotension frequency changes when hyperbaric or isobaric formulations of bupivacaine, or their sequential administrations, are used for cesarean section. Hypotension after spinal anesthesia for cesarean section is common. Materials and methods: A total of 144 patients who were to undergo cesarean section with spinal anesthesia were allocated into 4 groups. To present 12 gynecologic cancer cases with brain metastasis and a discussion of the relevant literature. Gynecologic malignancy is the second most common cancer in elderly women, following breast cancer. These cancers usually spread locally at first, and common distant metastatic sites are the lungs, liver, spleen, and distant lymph nodes. The brain is not a usual site of metastatic involvement. Materials and methods: The study included 12 cases with various gynecologic malignancies that were retrospectively analyzed. To investigate the relation between aortic stiffness and the extension/severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Materials and methods: A consecutive 100 patients with suspicion of CAD who underwent elective coronary angiography were enrolled in this study. To investigate whether nitrite levels were abnormally high in expired breath condensate (EBC) from workers with asthma-like syndrome. Materials and methods: We measured the nitrite levels in EBC from 48 volunteer workers, including 25 smokers, with asthma-like syndrome before and after SO2 exposure and compared these levels with those from 44 nonexposed control subjects, including 23 smokers. Results: Baseline concentrations of nitrite in the workers before SO2 exposure were higher (19.31 ± 1.06 nmol/mL) than in the controls (13.08 ± 1.36 nmol/mL; P < 0.001). Acute SO2 exposure produced a significant increase in concentrations of nitrite (23.62 ± 1.36) compared to the baseline value (P < 0.05). Preexposure nitrite concentrations were similar in smoking and nonsmoking workers (17.85 ± 1.72 and 20.20 ± 1.59; P > 0.05).
