Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The purpose of this study was to evaluate cardiopulmonary responses of individuals with different fitness levels according to predetermined rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scores and to investigate the correspondence between the heart rate reserve percentage (HRR%) and the RPE scale by using fit and unfit subjects. Materials and methods: RPE scores of sedentary volunteers were recorded at different HRR% levels during graded exercise tests on a cycle ergometer. Following the tests, subjects were divided into 2 groups, high metabolic equivalent [(MET) MET >= 10; n = 9] and low MET (MET < 10; n = 11), according to maximal O_2 uptakes (VO_{2max}). Participants performed the steady-state exercise test at the 13th-14th level of their perceived exertion 48 h after the first test. Variance and regression analyses were performed. Results: For all HRR% values, RPE levels were not different between groups. During the graded exercise test, perceived exertion was significantly higher in the low MET group than in the high MET group. Predetermined RPE score results were significantly greater in the low MET group with relative O2 consumption as compared to the high MET group (P < 0.05-0.001). Conclusion: In individuals with different VO_{2max} levels, exercise intensity can be prescribed using HRR% or RPE scale methods while adjusting for individual differences in oxygen consumption.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: To study the combination treatment consisting of half-dose verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT) and an intravitreal injection of ranibizumab as a potential treatment for patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Materials and methods: Six eyes of 6 patients were studied with fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography to diagnose the maculopathy, monitor the detachments, and localize the choroidal hyperpermeability of the disorder. Half-dose verteporfin PDT was applied to areas of choroidal hyperpermeability and, the following day, 0.5 mg/0.05 mL ranibizumab was injected intravitreally. The patients were observed to determine the anatomic and functional outcomes. Results: The combination …

Effect Of Prenatal Exposure To Cigarette Smoke On The Conduction Of Sensory Nerve Fibers In The Rat, Jumah Shakhanbeh

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: To investigate the effect of prenatal exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) on the conduction of sensory nerve fibers in the adult rat offspring. Materials and methods: Pregnant rats were exposed to CS by inhalation during the gestation period. The saphenous nerve in the adult offspring was exposed in vivo, and the conduction parameters of the threshold, maximum strength of stimulation, conduction velocity, and amplitude of compound action potentials (CAPs) of A\alpha\beta-, A\delta-, and C-fibers were examined. Results: Prenatal exposure to CS induced significant reduction (P < 0.005) in the peak amplitude of CAPs of A\alpha\beta- and A\delta-fibers. The conduction velocity of A\alpha\beta-fibers and C-fibers was significantly (P < 0.025-0.05) increased after prenatal exposure to CS. Conclusion: Prenatal exposure to CS attenuates the conduction of sensory nerve fibers in the rat saphenous nerve.
