There has been limited research done in the Philippines in the area of aphasia, a frequent concomitant symptom of strokes and presents as impairment in any area of the input and output of language. Diagnosis is generally conducted by clinicians based on sites of lesion of speakers with aphasia and clinical observations of language symptoms and unpublished translation of the WAB. The lack of relevant research and formal assessment tools in the Philippines motivated this current study. Recent data indicate that only 34% of American eighth grade students are able to demonstrate grade-level proficiency with academic reading tasks (NCES, 2011). The staggering nature of statistics such as this is even more profound when considering that high level literacy skills combined with mastery of digital texts have become practical requirements for success in secondary education, post-secondary education, and virtually all vocational contexts. Patients with life-limiting cancer and their families face unique challenges that interfere with their ability to make decisions or adequately express their health care preferences about end of life (EOL) treatment. As a result, patients at EOL often receive aggressive unwanted treatment that nationally costs billions of dollars and results in surrogate distress about not honoring patient wishes. Respecting Choices® DS-ACP is a disease-specific Advance Care Planning (ACP) intervention that is designed to overcome barriers associated with ACP and potentially decrease the incidence of unwanted, overly aggressive treatments at EOL. The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggests that dental practices will be seeing patients with this diagnosis more frequently. Although patients with ASD have similar dental needs to other patients, the symptoms of the disorder may influence the ability of dental practitioners to provide necessary care. Dental professionals may be unaware of the difficulties with sensory processing common to patients with ASD. However, awareness of sensory processing issues and knowledge of strategies to improve the sensory experience for individuals with ASD may improve dental visits for these patients and allow for enhanced dental care provision.

Fears surrounding the nurse faculty shortage in the United States have prompted significant emphasis on supporting novice educators and those in transition to new roles within academia through mentoring. Yet a continued focus on traditionally held notions of a hierarchical dyad limits possibilities for facilitating rich, diverse, mentoring relationships. A novel theoretical framework incorporating social network perspective is used to conceptualize the dynamic, multilevel reality of mentoring in examination of nurse faculty mentoring. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive treatment modality that utilizes light in the presence of oxygen to activate photosensitizing agents to produce cell death. Phthalocyanine 4 (Pc 4), a second generation photosensitizer has shown efficacy in vitro, in vivo and in a phase I clinical trial. Pc 4 localizes primarily to mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, where it causes apoptotic cell death during PDT. Previously, our laboratory showed that photo sensitizers that localize to lysosomes are more effective in killing cancer cells than ones directed to mitochondria after PDT. Objectives. The purpose of this study was to assess the health effects of high home foreclosure rates in an area of the United States of America and the utility of hospital discharge data for this purpose. Methods.We analyzed hospital discharge data from three postal zip codes using the principal diagnosis for 25 Diagnostic Related Groups associated with stress. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize hospital discharge rates for each condition by year and zip code. To test for differences across time, the Cochran-Armitage trend test was performed. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of employment status and unemployment duration on perceived health, access to health care, and health risk behaviors. Data from Nevada's 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) were analyzed. We compared participants who were unemployed (greater than and less than one year) to those who were employed and those who were voluntarily out of the labor force (OLF). Unemployed participants had significantly worse perceived mental health profiles, were more likely to delay health care services due to cost, and were less likely to have access to health care than employed …

To review the clinical outcomes of 9 patients with sigmoid volvulus (SV), a rare complication during pregnancy. Materials and methods: The clinical records of the patients were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The age range of the patients was 24-39 years (mean: 30.6 years). All patients were multiparous, and 6 patients (66.7%) were in the third trimester when diagnosed with SV. The main clinical features were abdominal pain/tenderness, obstipation, and distention in all patients (100.0%). The correct diagnosis was achieved based on clinical examination in 66.7% of the cases. Endoscopic detorsion was attempted in 6 patients (66.7%), with an 83.3% success rate. …

To show the effect of infection control measures (ICMs) on nosocomial infections (NIs) in a burn unit. Materials and methods: This study was conducted retrospectively at a 15-bed pediatric and adult burn unit, and 1329 hospitalized patients from 2003 to 2008 were enrolled. Detection and surveillance of NIs was performed by the infection control team (ICT), actively and prospectively, and was patient and laboratory based. Pan-resistant P. aeruginosa strains were seen in the unit in 2003. A periodical education program was applied by the ICT, and some changes were recommended. To evaluate the effect of tramadol addition to levobupivacaine in axillary plexus blockade in a prospective, randomized double-blind study. Materials and methods: A total of 60 patients scheduled to undergo hand and forearm surgery under axillary plexus blockade were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group L received 36 mL of racemic 0.5% levobupivacaine with 2 mL of saline, whereas Group LT received 2 mL (100 mg) of tramadol instead of saline.
