Investigation Of A Locus On Chromosome 9 For Contributions To Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome In Broilers, Sriram Krishnamoorthy May 2012

Investigation Of A Locus On Chromosome 9 For Contributions To Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome In Broilers, Sriram Krishnamoorthy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the ascites syndrome in chickens has been investigated for years, it continues to inflict financial losses to the world poultry industry. It is estimated that 8% of the 361 million broiler deaths are due to ascites leading to losses of millions of dollars annually. Efforts to curb the incidence of ascites are typically designed to slow early growth. This limits the birds' ability to show its true genetic potential and impacts later yields. In 1994 lines divergent for susceptibility to ascites were established from a commercial sire line through sibling selection of birds reared at local altitude after testing …

Recombinant Protein Production In Bacillus Species, Isolation And Methionine Production In Methionine-Producing Microorganisms, Suwat Saengkerdsub

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Linoleic acid isomerase (LAI) is the enzyme that converts linoleic acid to conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) which appear to be capable of lowering cancer risk and enhancing immunity. There is an interest in developing commercial processes for the production of single isomers of CLA by biotransformation of LA using microbial cells and enzymes. However, the evaluation of these strains suggest that growth and LA isomerase production levels by these anaerobes are insufficient to support economic commercial production of single CLA isomers. A better alternative is to clone the isomerase gene and to generate new production strains using recombinant technology. Bifidobacterium …

Art Therapy Assessment Of Adult Incarcerated Offenders: A Research Proposal For The Assessment Of Locus Of Control, Alecia Perreault

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

There is a lack of research that combines both art therapy assessment and prison inmates as it relates to locus of control. This is a research proposal that attempts to highlight the need for research with art therapy assessments among the offender population. More specifically, it attempts to correlate art therapy assessments with the assessment of specific traits, like locus of control, as they are typically found in offenders. This thesis reviews literature that is related to the field of art therapy assessment, projective drawing assessment, and the offender population, as well as discusses implications for further study.

Recognition for positive behavior is an appropriate response of the social environment to elicit desirable external behavior among the youth. Such positive responses, rendered from various social systems, include tangible and intangible reinforcements. The following theories are used to explain the importance of recognizing positive behavior: operational conditioning, observational learning, self-determination, and humanistic perspective. In the current work, culturally and socially desirable behaviors are discussed in detail with reference to Chinese adolescents. Positive behavior recognition is especially important to adolescent development because it promotes identity formation as well as cultivates moral reasoning and social perspective thinking from various social systems. …

Elucidating The Igfbp2 Signaling Pathway In Glioma Development And Progression, Kristen M. Holmes May 2012

Elucidating The Igfbp2 Signaling Pathway In Glioma Development And Progression, Kristen M. Holmes

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Diffuse gliomas are highly lethal central nervous system malignancies which, unfortunately, are the most common primary brain tumor and also the least responsive to the very few therapeutic modalities currently available to treat them. IGFBP2 is a newly recognized oncogene that is operative in multiple cancer types, including glioma, and shows promise for a targeted therapeutic approach. Elevated IGFBP2 expression is present in high-grade glioma and correlates with poor survival. We have previously demonstrated that IGFBP2 induces glioma development and progression in a spontaneous glioma mouse model, which highlighted its significance and potential for future therapy. However, we did not …

Subacromial Impingement Syndrome, Masood Umer, Irfan Qadir, Mohsin Azam May 2012

Subacromial Impingement Syndrome, Masood Umer, Irfan Qadir, Mohsin Azam

Department of Surgery Docs

Subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS) represents a spectrum of pathology ranging from subacromial bursitis to rotator cuff tendinopathy and full-thickness rotator cuff tears. The relationship between subacromial impingement and rotator cuff disease in the etiology of rotator cuff injury is a matter of debate. However, the etiology is multi-factorial, and it has been attributed to both extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms. Management includes physical therapy, injections, and, for some patients, surgery. No high-quality randomized controlled trials are available so far to provide possible evidence for differences in outcome of different treatment strategies. There remains a need for high-quality clinical research on the …

Hyperflexion Trauma In The Posttraumatic Nonunion Odontoid Process Fracture: A Case Study, C Chaichankul, W Limthongkul, W. Yingsakmongkol

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Os odontoideum is a small round or oval corticated ossicle with a smooth cortical border and no body union to the body of the axis. Posttraumatic injury of the cervical spine is one of the etiologies. We reported a 28-year-old man patient with os odontoideum presented with a trivial hyperflexion cervical trauma. He developed neurogenic shock and central cord syndrome. This case supports the theory that previous trauma is the etiology of the abnormality. Surgical management alleviated his symptom. Occipitocervical fusion with C1 laminectomy was successfully achieved in this case. Odontoid nonunion is a potentially a serious situation. Patients can …

The Effect Of Heart Failure Education On Intermediate Care Unit Nursing Staff's Knowledge Of Heart Failure, Self-Care, And Best Practice Guidelines, Carol Budgin May 2012

The Effect Of Heart Failure Education On Intermediate Care Unit Nursing Staff's Knowledge Of Heart Failure, Self-Care, And Best Practice Guidelines, Carol Budgin

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Heart failure (HF) is a chronic disease affecting nearly six million people in the United States with an annual cost of nearly 33 billion dollars. If nurses are inadequately prepared to care for and/or educate patients with HF, evidence-based (EB) nursing care will be suboptimal and hospital readmission rates with the subsequent increased costs for care will continue to soar. To address their higher-than-national average HF readmission rates, an EB nursing project was implemented at a local, urban community hospital to assess intermediate care unit (IMCU) nursing staff’s knowledge of HF, selfcare, and best practice guidelines. The Rossworm & Larrabee …

The Effect Of Progesterone Only Contraception On The Accuracy Of Cervical Cytologic Interpretation, Michelle Reneé Collins May 2012

The Effect Of Progesterone Only Contraception On The Accuracy Of Cervical Cytologic Interpretation, Michelle Reneé Collins

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Abstract Introduction: Papanicolaou screening is the standard of care for the detection of abnormal cervical cells. Early detection and treatment of cervical neoplasia depends on the accurate interpretation of the cytologic sample. Diagnosis of dysplasia is made by histology interpretation to confirm the results of cytology screening. Cervical cells are susceptible to change as a result of hormonal exposure, and this has the potential to affect cytologic interpretation. Cervical cells may be exposed to exogenous progesterone if the woman uses injectable depot medroxyprogesterone acetate or a progesterone intrauterine device. Previous study results have been inconsistent regarding the effect of progesterone …

Cns Penetration Of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors In Mouse Models, Mohamed Elmeliegy May 2012

Cns Penetration Of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors In Mouse Models, Mohamed Elmeliegy

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

For the past three decades, advances in the treatment of central nervous system (CNS) tumors such as malignant glioma have only been modest. One particular challenge facing treatment of brain tumors is the delivery of therapeutically effective concentrations of anti-cancer agents to the target site in the brain. The sanctuary of the brain is protected by several barrier systems such as the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). These barriers restrict the passage of anti-cancer drugs into the brain via several protective mechanisms.

In the present study, we used cerebral microdialysis sampling, a technique for sampling unbound …

Rankl And Osteoprotegerin Levels In Response To Orthodontic Forces, Katherine Ann Hart D.D.S. May 2012

Rankl And Osteoprotegerin Levels In Response To Orthodontic Forces, Katherine Ann Hart D.D.S.

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Orthodontic tooth movement is mediated by interactions between PDL cells and those of the alveolus. One protein—the receptor activator nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)—is critical for osteoclastogenesis, and osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a decoy ligand that competitively inhibits RANKL. A higher RANKL/OPG ratio is associated with areas of bone resorption, while a lower ratio occurs in areas of bone deposition and homeostasis. There have been almost no clinical studies of RANKL and OPG expression in human subjects undergoing orthodontic tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to quantify changes in the levels of RANKL and of OPG expression in …
