Uptake And Toxic Effects Of Surface Modified Nanomaterials In Freshwater Aquatic Organisms, Brandon Seda May 2012

Uptake And Toxic Effects Of Surface Modified Nanomaterials In Freshwater Aquatic Organisms, Brandon Seda

All Dissertations

Nanomaterials are a class of materials with unique properties due to their size, and the association of these properties with the toxicity of nanomaterials is poorly understood. The present study assessed the toxic effects of stable aqueous colloidal suspensions of three distinctly different classes of nanomaterials in aquatic organisms. The fullerene, C70, was stabilized through non-covalent surface modification with gallic acid. Toxicity of C70-gallic acid was confirmed to exhibit similar toxic effects as C60-fullerene, including changes in antioxidative processes in Daphnia magna. Daphnia magna fecundity was significantly reduced in 21d bioassays at C70-gallic concentrations below quantifiable limits (0.03 mg/L C70). …

Using consolidated data with schools as the unit of analysis, results showed that program implementers generally had positive perceptions of the program, themselves, and benefits of the program, with more than four-fifths of the implementers regarding the program as beneficial to the program participants. The subjective outcome evaluation instrument was found to be internally consistent. Multiple regression analyses revealed that perceived qualities of the program and program implementers predicted perceived effectiveness of the program. In conjunction with …

Racemization Of Amino Acids In Teeth For The Determination Of Age, Andrea Lee Toll May 2012

Racemization Of Amino Acids In Teeth For The Determination Of Age, Andrea Lee Toll

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Instrumental to forensic investigations is the ability to identify unknown human remains providing key evidence to criminal cases, resolution to missing persons, and assistance in mass or natural disasters. Identification of remains in an effort to determine age is an area of forensics that has received considerable attention. Traditional methods in age determination such as morphology are often biased, antiquated, and frequently result in a large margin of error. Conversely, the emergence of new forensic techniques provide promise to reduce the margin of error in determining age. One such technique has focused on relating the extent of amino acid racemization …

Fotonovelas: A Parent Resource And Education Guide For Underserved Hispanic Families With Autism In Marin County, Tiffany Chi, Monica Christina Guzman Critchfield, Isaac Xuliang Stahlhut

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The current estimated prevalence of autism in the United States is 1 out of 88 children, up from 2006 when the estimated prevalence of autism was 1 out of 110 (Centers for Disease and Prevention, 2012). Increasing numbers are a major concern because there is a greater need for services for individuals with autism. According to Kidsdata (2010), approximately 5.7% of Marin County of California’s population of children has a diagnosis of autism. The Hispanic community forms the largest minority group in Marin County, consisting of 15.5% of the population (US Census Bureau, 2010). This community was the target underserved …

The Role Of Faith And Spirituality In The Work Of End-Of-Life Caregivers, Edward P. Stannard May 2012

The Role Of Faith And Spirituality In The Work Of End-Of-Life Caregivers, Edward P. Stannard

Master of Arts in Religious Studies (M.A.R.S. Theses)

Nurses, certified nursing assistants and other healthcare workers who care for those who are terminally ill face issues of mortality and even existential questions every day on the job. These professionals, who have intimate contact with their patients daily, must find an inner source of strength and perseverance in order to face people who are at the end of their lives, who may be in pain, and who frequently are alone in their rooms aside from the institution’s staff. This study asks whether an inner sense of religious faith or spirituality helps end-of-life healthcare workers conduct their daily tasks and …

Functions Of Autophagy In Lipid Homeostasis And Survival In Androgen-Dependent Prostate Cancer Cells, Ramesh Raj Kaini May 2012

Functions Of Autophagy In Lipid Homeostasis And Survival In Androgen-Dependent Prostate Cancer Cells, Ramesh Raj Kaini

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Androgen deprivation therapy, one of the standard treatments for prostate cancer, induces apoptosis as well as autophagy in androgen-responsive PCa cells. As modulation of autophagy is a new paradigm for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of various cancer therapies, we sought to determine the functions of autophagy during androgen deprivation. In this study, we confirmed that androgen removal or inhibition induces autophagy in two different hormone sensitive prostate cancer cells. Androgen deprivation also caused depletion of lipid droplets which was abrogated on inhibition of autophagy by pharmacological means (3-methyladenine, bafilomycin A1) or using a genetic approach (Atg5 siRNA). In addition, colocalization …

Orientation For Increased Volunteer Effectiveness With Midwives For Haiti, Kelly Toner May 2012

Orientation For Increased Volunteer Effectiveness With Midwives For Haiti, Kelly Toner

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and early infancy claim the lives of millions of mothers and newborn infants across the globe each year. The cause: lack of access to maternal education, medical check-ups, and skilled birth attendants. The unfortunate fact is that death from these complications is largely preventable. Even more astonishingly, maternal infant mortality is only getting worse as time passes. In the country with the highest maternal infant mortality rate in the world, one organization strives to create change from within. Functioning on the premise that “change can occur one person at a time, and through the efforts of …

Novel Mechanisms Of Androgen Receptor Degradation By Alpha-Tocopherylquinone And Curcumin Analog 27, Alexandra Marie Fajardo May 2012

Novel Mechanisms Of Androgen Receptor Degradation By Alpha-Tocopherylquinone And Curcumin Analog 27, Alexandra Marie Fajardo

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Defining underlying molecular mechanisms exploited by cancer cells in their development and progression provides a necessary foundation for experimental therapeutics. The androgen receptor (AR) is a known therapeutic target for prostate cancer (CaP) given its well-established role in both the development and progression of CaP. The AR is a ligand activated transcription factor that regulates the expression of many genes involved in proliferation and differentiation. Identifying agents that down-regulate AR expression may elucidate mechanism(s) for selectively targeting the AR. Two related agents of the natural products curcumin and vitamin E, curcumin analog 27 (ca27) and alpha-tocopheryl quinone (TQ), respectively were …

Population Dynamics Of Flaviviruses In The United States, Kendra Pesko May 2012

Population Dynamics Of Flaviviruses In The United States, Kendra Pesko

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The genus Flavivirus comprises viral species with positive sense, single stranded RNA genomes, most of which are transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks. During replication, RNA viruses have higher mutation rates than DNA viruses, because their virally encoded RNA dependent RNA polymerase has no proofreading activity. These viruses have been shown to exist within and between hosts as swarms of closely related mutant genomes that can be examined through sequence analysis. In the work presented here we focus on the population dynamics of two zoonotic flaviviruses that cause human morbidity and mortality in the United States: tick-borne Powassan virus (POW) and …

Depression And Evangelical Christian Spirituality: Exploring A Theoretical Model, Katheryn Jane Klukow May 2012

Depression And Evangelical Christian Spirituality: Exploring A Theoretical Model, Katheryn Jane Klukow

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

While religious involvement, particularly intrinsic religiosity or spirituality, has shown a significant inverse relationship with depression, this relationship is complex and multifaceted and several decades of study have yet to reveal a clear pattern. This work is a survey of the current research on the etiology and symptomology of depression and its interaction with spirituality. This work is testing a new model that views the effects of depression on spirituality as a function of an individual’s perceived relationship with God. A survey was distributed to a sample of 135 evangelical Christians. Depressed persons made up approximately 16% of the sample. …

Ethanol Exposure Impairs Glutamatergic Synaptic Transmission And Plasticity In The Ca1 Hippocampal Region During The Third Trimester-Equivalent Of Human Pregnancy: Implications For Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Michael P. Puglia May 2012

Puglia

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder results from developmental exposure to ethanol. Although many organ systems are targeted by this teratogen, the central nervous system is exquisitely sensitive. Children with this disease often present with behavioral disorders as well as impairments in learning and memory. Ethanol exposure affects developmental processes throughout pregnancy; however, the third trimester-equivalent has demonstrated heightened sensitivity. Although the mechanism of action(s) of ethanol remains unknown, studies suggest that impairments in glutamatergic signaling and synaptic plasticity during the third trimester-equivalent period of development lead to alterations in synaptic formation and refinement. However, little is known about the developmental effects …
