Push-ups are widely used in public school physical education classes, and by military and law enforcement organizations to test upper body muscular fitness. The majority of the test protocols do not specify a hand position. Some research has demonstrated that hand positioning has a significant effect of on electromyographic activity of the working muscles, ground reaction forces and elbow joint loads during single or sub-maximal push-ups. Demographic, socio-economic, attitudinal, dietary, health behavioural and anthropometric data were collected from 221 “disadvantaged” and 74 “advantaged” women aged 18-35 years across Dublin, according to the provisions of a novel socio-economic sampling frame. Internal and external validation techniques established the dietary assessment method of choice and identified “valid” dietary reporters (n=216, 153 disadvantaged, 63 advantaged) among this sample. The purpose of this study was to determine if residents (n = 26) living in an Iowa long-term care facility had differences in food intake at their noon meal and body weight when served traditional tray meal service for 10 weeks compared to being served restaurant-style meal service for 10 weeks. The study also evaluated the facility’s raw food costs of the two meal service styles.

Mean meal intake scale scores improved when residents were served restaurant-style meal service (0.4±0.3) compared to traditional tray meal service. Residents did not show a significant percent weight (1.1%±3.7%) change or percent BMI (0.9%±3.7%) …

There are limited studies that deal with the acute and chronic effects that high collision sports have on neurocognitive function. This study used a standardized concussion assessment (SAC) test to examine the effects that participation in high school football and high school soccer has on athletes’ neurocognitive functions throughout a season.

Forty-six male high school athletes participated in this study: 30 football players, and 16 soccer players. Each athlete underwent baseline SAC testing and a variety of SAC tests three additional times throughout the duration of the season, approximately 3 weeks apart.

Osteoporosis, a degenerative bone disease, is a preventable disease. The purpose of this study was to determine if an educational intervention would increase knowledge and influence women to change their behaviors (i.e., exercise and dietary calcium intake) related to osteoporosis.

A random sample of 149 college female students participated in this study. Participants completed two questionnaires consisting of the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test and the Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale. Participants were surveyed to determine their knowledge of osteoporosis and their intent to change their health behavior before and after an educational intervention.

Lack of physical activity is a serious epidemic that affects one’s health. Primary care physicians can play a key role in influencing and changing people’s behaviors. The objective of this study was to assess primary care physicians’ role in physical activity counseling and what if any guidelines they use. One hundred and forty-seven primary care physicians completed and returned the 23-item Physical Activity Counseling Questionnaire. Most of the respondents were over the age of 50 (58.5%), group practitioners (60.5%), male (59.9%), and have been practicing more than 20 years (50.3%). Current literature points to lack of education, healthcare access, and physician counseling as key barriers to screening, in addition to cognitive-emotional apprehensions.

Maternal preeclampsia is a prediction of higher ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in the exposed offspring. The mother's blood pressure affects the blood pressure of the fetus since the placenta mediates blood flow. The mechanisms regulating retinal ganglion cell (RGC) development are crucial for retinogenesis and for the establishment of normal vision. However, these mechanisms are only vaguely understood. RGCs are the first neuronal lineage to segregate from pluripotent progenitors in the developing retina. As output neurons, RGCs display developmental features very distinct from those of the other retinal cell types. To better understand RGC development, we have previously constructed a gene regulatory network featuring a hierarchical cascade of transcription factors that ultimately controls the expression of downstream effector genes. The matched pairs sign test using bivariate ranked set sampling (BVRSS) is introduced and investigated. We show that this test is asymptotically more efficient than its counterpart sign test based on a bivariate simple random sample (BVSRS). The asymptotic null distribution and the efficiency of the test are derived. The Pitman asymptotic relative efficiency is used to compare the asymptotic performance of the matched pairs sign test using BVRSS versus using BVSRS. The Clearplan Easy Fertility Monitor (CPFM) is a handheld monitor designed to help couples achieve pregnancy.
