Pathogenesis of infectious disease is not only determined by the virulence of the microbe but also by the immune status of the host. Vaccination is the most effective means to control infectious diseases. A hallmark of the adaptive immune system is the generation of B cell memory, which provides a long-lasting protective antibody response that is central to the concept of vaccination. Recent studies revealed a distinct function for B1b lymphocytes, a minor subset of mature B cells that closely resembles that of memory B cells in a number of aspects. Background: The aim of this study was to determine if remotely sensed data and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) can test relationships between Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles gambiae s.l. larval habitats and environmental parameters within Internally Displaced People (IDP) campgrounds in Gulu, Uganda. A total of 65 georeferenced aquatic habitats in various IDP camps were studied to compare the larval abundance of Cx. quinquefasciatus and An. gambiae s.l. The aquatic habitat dataset were overlaid onto Land Use Land Cover (LULC) maps retrieved from Landsat imagery with 150 m × 150 m grid cells stratified by levels of drainage. The LULC change …

Aim: To determine the predictive factors for early aspiration in liver abscess.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of all Patients with liver abscess from 1995 to 2004 was performed. Abscess was diagnosed as amebic in 661 (68%) Patients, pyogenic in 200 (21%), indeterminate in 73 (8%) and mixed in 32 (3%). Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine predictive factors for aspiration of liver abscess.

Results: A total of 966 Patients, 738 (76%) male, mean age 43 17 years, were evaluated: 540 Patients responded to medical therapy while adjunctive percutaneous aspiration was performed in 426 Patients. Predictive factors for aspiration …

Coronary Steal Syndrome After Coronary Artery Bypass For Anomalous Aortic, Benjamin A. Youdelman, Glenn J. Pelletier, C. Igor Mesia, Marshall L. Jacobs

Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery (AAOCA) found in a symptomatic 9 year old boy was initially treated with coronary artery bypass (CABG) using a left internal mammary artery (LIMA) anastomoses to the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) but resulted in coronary ischemia, likely from a steal phenomenon. Subsequent transection of the proximal LIMA with anastomosis to the ascending aorta, and coronary ostial enlargement, resulted in a durable treatment. We recommend caution in choosing CABG using a LIMA pedicle graft for the treatment of AAOCA.

Public perception has linked the onset of signs and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) to childhood vacciniation, mainly with the measles-mumps-rubella vavine (MMR). This perception has been reinforced by the very public statements of some celebrities. Numerous clinical studies have failed to show any evidence of such an association and one study that initiallty raised the question has been retracted. This evidence is reviewed and discussed.

Karl Marx famously describes religion as the “opiate of the masses.” Marx argues that religion is an ideological tool that legitimates and defends the interests of the dominant, wealthy classes in the population. It does so in part by placating the poor and exploited classes. Faced with an arduous and seemingly unjust life in this world, the poor and exploited at least can look forward to a more perfect existence in the afterlife. To reach that afterlife, however, one must peacefully and quietly persevere through life’s tribulation—respecting the life, liberty, and (especially) private property of others. Previous studies documented significant behavioral changes in the offspring of cocaine-exposed mothers. We now explore the hypothesis that maternal cocaine exposure could alter the fetal epigenetic machinery sufficiently to cause lasting neurochemical and functional changes in the offspring. Pregnant CD1 mice were administered either saline or 20 mg/kg cocaine twice daily on gestational days 8–19. Male pups from each of ten litters of the cocaine and control groups were analyzed at 3 (P3) or 30 (P30) days postnatum. Global DNA methylation, methylated DNA immunoprecipitation followed by CGI2 microarray profiling and bisulfite sequencing, as well as quantitative real-time RT-PCR gene expression …

Role Of Place Of Residence On Drinking And Driving Among Students In A Hispanic Serving University

This study describes the role of place of residence on drinking and driving among students in a large Hispanic- serving institution. The National College Health Assessment survey was administered during the fall of 2004. 1130 randomly selected students completed this anonymous questionnaire. Hispanic students were less likely to drive after drinking compared to non-Hispanic white students, but Hispanic students were more likely to live with parents (55%) compared with non-Hispanic white students (22%). After adjusting for the place of residence, there were no significant differences in drinking and driving between Hispanics and non-Hispanic white students. Therefore, in part, lower levels …
