Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of in-and-out urethral catheterization on serum total and free prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels and free/total PSA ratio. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective study including 24 patients who admitted with lower urinary tract symptoms and underwent in-and-out urethral catheterization with 18 F Foley catheter inserted for postvoiding residual urine measurement. Blood samples were withdrawn to determine serum total and free PSA levels and free/total PSA ratio immediately before, and at 1, 24 and 72 hours after urethral catheterization. Aim: The aim of this investigation was to measure the amount of g-decay of several building materials (brick and cement), raw materials (fly-ash and soil), interior coating materials (foam [used as a thermal insulator], water-based paints, solvent-based paints and phosphogypsum) from central Turkey, in terms of Bq kg^{-1}, and to calculate the biological damage caused by this radioactivity. Aim: The insertion of ventilation tubes at the time of cleft palate surgery is a controversial issue. We assessed the status of hearing and the middle ear in long-term follow-up after the treatment of cleft palate. Materials and Methods: 56 patients with cleft palate repair at the ages of 15 to 24 months were included in the study. The control group consisted of 15 patients in whom ventilation tubes were inserted previously for secretory otitis media. They all had audiologic analyses. The presence of a supernumerary tooth in the nose is an unusual phenomenon and a rare form of ectopic tooth eruption in the maxillofacial region. In this case, the patient was referred to the hospital with the complaint of severe headache. In the endoscopic examination, the supernumerary tooth crown was not covered with mucosa or granulation tissue. In the present study, the clinical and radiological diagnosis of a supernumerary tooth located in the nose is reported.

Congenital gastrointestinal duplications are rare, and gastric duplication cysts are even rarer. Most cases are seldom diagnosed preoperatively. We present a case of gastric duplication cyst, which in preoperative imaging studies mimicked a hydatid/pseudocyst of the pancreas. The diagnosis was made only intraoperatively and was confirmed by histopathological examination of the completely excised cyst.

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disorder. The diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis requires the presence of two major or one major and two minor features. Pulmonary involvement has been reported to occur in less than 1% in patients and carries a poor prognosis. We present a female tuberous sclerosis patient with pulmonary involvement, evaluated for a positive PPD reaction.

Chondroblastic osteosarcoma (COS), a subgroup of intramedullary osteosarcoma, is usually located in the knee region of the body. It is most common in adolescents and early adulthood. COS has similar clinical and radiological features to those of conventional osteosarcomas. A 17-year-old male suffered from walking problems and lower limb pain. Aim: The precise pathogenetic mechanisms causing thrombotic complications in Behçet´s disease (BD) are still not known. To explain the pathogenesis with coagulation induction or a defective fibrinolysis superimposed on endothelial dysfunction, various hemostatic parameters were studied. Congenital diaphragmatic eventration is an uncommon condition in adults and is defined as an abnormal elevation of the diaphragm. In adults, diaphragmatic eventration causes respiratory impairment that is associated with severe dyspnea, orthopnea and hypoxia. Most of the symptomatic patients may survive with supportive therapy without any need for surgical correction, though they are at risk of spontaneous diaphragm rupture. Clinical manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) include repeated episodes of arterial and/or venous thrombosis, recurrent fetal wastage, and premature births. Correct diagnosis of APS requires identification of lupus anticoagulant (LA) and anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL). Other antibodies such as anti-b2 glycoprotein-I have also been detected. A 32-year-old man presented with acute left-sided hemiplegia and was admitted with a possible diagnosis of primary APS. A pulmonary embolus-in-transit was captured incidentally by transthoracic echocardiographic study.

Aim: Catalepsy occurs following high dopamine D2 receptor blockade by the typical antipsychotic drug haloperidol. The present study investigated the effect of different drugs affecting monoamine neurotransmission in this animal model of Parkinson's disease in mice. Materials and Methods: Drugs were intraperitoneally administered with haloperidol 30 min prior to testing. Catalepsy was measured using the bar test. Results: Catalepsy duration was reduced by the non-selective noradrenaline and serotonin reuptake inhibitors imipramine and amitriptyline (21.1% and 22.3% reduction by 20 mg/kg imipramine and amitriptyline, respectively). Aim: Increasing intracuff pressure and postoperative laryngotracheal complications are the important issues in nitrous oxide anesthesia. The Lanz® endotracheal tube is a new kind of tube with a pressure-regulating valve. We aimed to investigate whether or not this tube may be useful in nitrous oxide anesthesia in terms of postoperative laryngotracheal complications. Materials and Methods: The study included 70 female patients, aged 18-60 years. Patients were intubated with the standard endotracheal tube in Group S (n = 35) and the Lanz® endotracheal tube in Group M (n = 35). Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate nasopharyngeal colonization of respiratory tract pathogens and nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in healthy schoolchildren (6-14 years old). Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted at Konuralp Primary School by Düzce University and 484 healthy children were included. Aim: The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in patients with diarrhea who attended Al-Nasser Pediatric Hospital in Gaza. Materials and Methods: From January to May 2005, single stool specimens from each of 416 children attending Al-Nasser Hospital were examined by Ziehl Neelsen (ZN) stain and ELISA for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Results: Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in 62 (14.9%) of the tested specimens by acid-fast staining technique and in 68 (16.3%) using ELISA kit. Montelukast, widely used in the treatment of asthma, is a selective and potent oral cysteinyl leukotriene-1 receptor antagonist. In this study, we investigated the effects of montelukast on oxidative stress and antioxidant defense in childhood asthma by measuring malondialdehyde and the paraoxonase activity. Twenty-five children with mild to moderate atopic asthma and 25 nonatopic children as controls were enrolled in the study. Asthmatic children were treated with montelukast, 5 mg tablets, for one month. Serum paraoxonase, malondialdehyde and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were measured before and after treatment. A 49-year-old male, who had undergone mitral valve replacement with mechanical cardiac valve and coronary arterial by-pass grafting six years previously, was admitted to our hospital with acute dyspnea. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed that one of the leaflets of the prosthetic valve was entirely immobilized in the closed position, and an immobile soft tissue mass was detected on the ventricular side of the obstructed leaflet. We performed re-replacement using a 29-mm mechanical prosthetic St. Jude valve under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest via right atrial thoracotomy.
