A 56-year-old man had a 6 x 5-cm mass originating from the fossa ovalis in the atrial septum found by echocardiography and multiple enlarging scalp masses. The mass had a regular surface and was prolapsing into the mitral valve during diastole. The tumor was successfully treated by surgical excision, which revealed a well-defined mass with a narrow-base stalk originating from the fossa ovalis in the atrial septum. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of myxoma. The scalp masses were also removed surgically; histopathologic examination corresponded to benign trichilemmal cyst. Isolated tuberculous inguinal lymphadenitis is a rare entity and is usually bilateral. A 16-year- old male presented with anorexia, nocturnal sweating and painless soft right inguinal lymph nodes. The patient underwent excision of lymph nodes and a Ziehl-Neelsen stain revealed the presence of acid-fast bacilli, but cultures of the lymph nodes were negative. Histological sections showed the presence of caseous necrosis and epithelioid cell granuloma. He had a positive tuberculin skin test (Mantoux) with 22 mm diameter. The patient was diagnosed as tuberculous lymphadenitis with these findings. Tuberculosis should be included in the differential diagnosis in any case of isolated …

Penile fractures are classically described as presenting with rapid detumescence of an erection associated with blunt trauma. This clinical finding is due to a tear in the tunica albuginea surrounding the corpora cavernosum. In this study, we report and discuss a case of trichotillomania and penile bending impulse resulting in penile fracture, which was operated in the urology clinic. The possible psychological and psychiatric problems underlying the impulsive behavior are discussed, and the value of a psychiatric evaluation is emphasized.

The effect of the endogenous cannabinoid anandamide on K+ currents activated by the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel opener cromakalim was investigated in follicle-enclosed Xenopus oocytes using the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique. Anandamide (1–90 μM) reversibly inhibited cromakalim-induced K+ currents, with an IC50 value of 8.1 ± 2 μM. Inhibition was noncompetitive and independent of membrane potential. Coapplication of anandamide with the cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor antagonist N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboximide hydrochloride (SR 141716A) (1 μM), the CB2 receptor antagonist N-[(1S)endo-1,3,3-trimethyl bicyclo heptan-2-yl]-5-(4-chloro-3-methylphenyl)-1-(4-methylbenzyl)-pyrazole-3-carboxamide (SR144528) (1 μM), or pertussis toxin (5 μg/ml) did not alter the inhibitory effect of anandamide, suggesting that known cannabinoid receptors …

Particular bodies within the Australian nation can be seen to threaten to disrupt and destabilize dominant notions of cultural citizenship. Understood through intricate intersections of ethnicity, gender and sexuality, 'Australianness' - and its correlation to the geographical nation - is constantly monitored. Crucial here is the manner in which boundaries of whiteness, and 'true Australianess', are reconstituted, fuelling avoidance of the ambiguities of national belonging and ensuring the enduring pathologisation of the 'un'Australian. In particular, discursive associations between HIV/AIDS and the 'foreign' as perceived contaminates to the nation operate to reinforce these understandings. The March, a demonstration for reproductive justice, brought out feminists and anti-abortion protestors alike. Emily remembered seeing African-American men holding signs that equated abortion to the airplane attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001. Nitric oxide (NO) produced by endothelial cells is a key component for blood-vessel dilation. Dilation is achieved through smooth muscle relaxation as a response to NO transport. Inhibition of this process occurs through the inactivation of NO by reactive oxygen species, especially superoxide (O2 -). NO and superoxide react quickly, forming peroxynitrite (ONOO-). Both superoxide and peroxynitrite apply oxidative stress on vascular tissue. Experimental studies investigating NO interactions are difficult since these reactions occur rapidly and over small distances. Hydatid cysts are rarely seen at the extrapulmonary sites. We report relapsed hydatid cysts with abdominal origin in a 25 years old woman. Over 1000 Hydatid cysts were removed through right posterolateral thoracotomy without any complications. Only very few cases are reported in the literature.

L-glutamate (Glu) is the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system with involvement encompassing learning and memory, cognition, plasticity, and motor movement. Dysregulation of the glutamatergic system is implicated in several neurological disorders including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The mechanisms underlying these neurological disorders are not clear, but evidence suggests that abnormal Glu neurotransmission plays a role. Elevated levels of Glu in the synaptic cleft overstimulate the N-methyl-Daspartate receptor leading to excitotoxicity, which causes neuronal loss in chronic neurological diseases. What is less understood is the source for the elevated Glu levels. …

El objetivo del trabajo es presentar un caso de equinococosis hepática poliquística por Echinococcus vogeli en una indígena de la etnia Yekuana del área amazónica venezolana. Presentó dolor abdominal punzante, hepatomegalia y eosinofilia marcada. Los estudios por imágenes mostraron lesiones poliquísticas en hígado. La serología para equinococosis resultó positiva. Hypothesis: Magnet hospital status would be related to positive nurse manager leadership attributes which would be related to greater clinical nurse autonomy and nurse manager leadership would mediate relationships between hospital status and clinical nurse autonomy. The neuropathology of Tourette Syndrome (TS) is poorly characterized. This thesis provides the first quantitative stereologic immunohistochemical study of the basal ganglia in TS. TS is a childhood neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Previous imaging studies found alterations in caudate (Cd) and putamen (Pt) volumes. To investigate possible alterations in cell populations, postmortem basal ganglia tissue from individuals with TS and normal controls (NC) was analyzed using unbiased stereological techniques. This study was designed to derive predictive logistic regression equations to allow the risk of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) to be defined as a function of both the lecithin/sphingomyelin (L/S) ratio and gestational age. Although the biochemical characterization of E. ictaluri, the subsequent disease progression of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), and the associated pathologic lesions are well characterized, the mechanism of invasion of E. ictaluri into a susceptible host is poorly understood. Identification and confirmation of virulence factors and associated genes of E. ictaluri is crucial to elucidating the pathogenesis of this important disease. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are ubiquitous macromolecules associated with cell surface and extracellular matrix of a wide range of cells and tissues. Heparanase is an extracellular matrix degradative enzyme which degrades the heparan sulfate chains of heparan sulfate proteoglycans. Although No Child Left Behind (2001) encourages the inclusion of all children within the regular curriculum, children with severe speech and physical disabilities rarely are provided with the literacy education provided to grade-level peers. This study taught alphabetic skills to three children with severe speech and physical impairments in the context of traditional alphabet books versus Phonic Faces Storybooks. Both storybooks were converted into e-books using Microsoft Office PowerPoint (Microsoft Office, 2003) and accessed using a single rocking lever switch. The Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale, Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale, and Post-Discharge Coping Difficulty Scale were developed by Dr. Marianne Weiss to measure nurse-sensitive discharge care processes and patient outcomes. Three versions of the scales were developed concurrently for different patient populations – Adult medical-surgical patients, Parents of hospitalized children, and Postpartum Patient mothers (see Weiss & Piacentine, 2006, Weiss et al., 2007, and Bobay et al., 2018 for description of the development and initial testing). Lanthanum-strontium manganites were synthesized using co-precipitation method with a reverse micellar microemulsion. Either oxalic acid, sodium hydroxide or tetramethylammonium hydroxide was used for the precipitation of precursor cations in a form that was subsequently calcined under various conditions in order to obtain perovskite manganite phase. Correlations between the properties of the synthesized powder and the calcination conditions have been put forth. The properties of the microemulsion-assisted synthesized material were compared with the samples prepared by following the supposedly similar chemical recombinations in bulk solutions, with an aim to challenge the fact that microemulsions in general have only templating effects on …
