Background
Patients with unresectable cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract often suffer severe symptoms due to pain, nausea and vomiting, weight loss, cachexia, and poor food tolerance. This can be related to gastric and duodenal cancers causing intrinsic obstruction of the intestinal lumen or pancreatic and biliary cancers causing extrinsic biliary compression. Management options vary depending on the site of obstruction, the patient’s functional status, the patient-defined goals of care, and estimated prognosis. Fast Fact #45 discussed medical management options. This Fact Fact reviews interventional approaches for upper GI obstructions, especially when further radiation, chemotherapy, medical management, or curative surgical …

Anti-Tumor Effect Of Doxycycline On Glioblastoma Cells, Andrea Wang-Gillam, Eric Siegel, Debra A. Mayes, Laura F. Hutchins, Yi-Hong Zhou
Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications
AIM: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumor in humans, and it is highly invasive. Doxycycline, first identified as an antimicrobial agent, is a nonspecific inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Our objective was to investigate the anti-MMP effect of doxycycline at therapeutically acceptable levels on glioma cells in vitro.
METHODS: The MTT assay was used to determine the anti-proliferative effects of doxycycline. MMP2 activity and expression were determined by gelatinase zymography and real-time quantitative RT-PCR, respectively. Cell invasion was assessed by Matrigel invasion assay.
RESULTS: Doxycycline exerted mild anti-proliferative effects on all three glioma cell lines …

Introduction: In order to prepare third year medical students in the Rural Physician Associate Program for a nine-month community-based continuity care experience in rural Minnesota, USA, a clinical skills day that featured human patient simulators and standardized patients was developed. Patients presenting with common urgent and routine primary-care problems were developed and presented using the objective structured clinical examination for teaching. The goals of the day were to: (1) distinguish urgent from non-urgent clinical presentation; (2) use clinical guidelines for making decisions; (3) communicate effectively in stressful situations; and (4) uncover a significant clinical issue with a different presenting complaint. …

Environmental Health Information Systems: More Than Just Gigabytes, Christopher R. Cook
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Environmental health professionals are concerned about bites. Animal bites, mosquito bites, and tick bites to name a few. But what about bytes of data? Environmental health information systems (EHIS) are often the "silent partners" in an environmental health (EH) department's daily protection of public health. By Webster's dictionary definition, a silent partner is a cohort that does not have the right to participate in an organization's management process. The purpose of this study was to encourage public health officials to make EHIS full partners in their EH departments. Through the use of five surveys, this study was designed to increase …

To determine whether the distinctive features of Caenorhabditis elegans chromosomal organization are shared with the C. briggsae genome, we constructed a single nucleotide polymorphism-based genetic map to order and orient the whole genome shotgun assembly along the six C. briggsae chromosomes. Although these species are of the same genus, their most recent common ancestor existed 80-110 million years ago, and thus they are more evolutionarily distant than, for example, human and mouse. We found that, like C. elegans chromosomes, C. briggsae chromosomes exhibit high levels of recombination on the arms along with higher repeat density, a higher fraction of intronic …

Annual Conference Presentations, Papers, and Posters
This presentation highlights some of the fascinating aspects that the author has been able to unearth about the life of Dr. Noah Elliott, the first African American physician to practice in Athens County. Not much about Dr. Elliott's early life is known, other than that he was born a slave in Kentucky. He is listed in the 1860 census in Gallipolis, Ohio, with an occupation of physician. During the War of Rebellion (1861-65) he served as a hospital steward in the 26th United States Colored Infantry. After the war, he practiced in several locations including in the western Athens County …

Is Gene Therapy A Good Therapeutic Approach For Hiv-Positive Patients?, Jai G. Marathe, Dawn P. Wooley

Despite advances and options available in gene therapy for HIV-1 infection, its application in the clinical setting has been challenging. Although published data from HIV-1 clinical trials show safety and proof of principle for gene therapy, positive clinical outcomes for infected patients have yet to be demonstrated. The cause for this slow progress may arise from the fact that HIV is a complex multi-organ system infection. There is uncertainty regarding the types of cells to target by gene therapy and there are issues regarding insufficient transduction of cells and long-term expression. This paper discusses state-of-the-art molecular approaches against HIV-1 and …

Practice Effects On Test-Takers’ Performance And Quality Of Cognitive Domains Should Be Part Of Every Pilot Assessment. Investigation Of The Mechanisms Of Practice Effects Ability Tests In Pilot Selection: A Spatial Ability Test As An Example, Frank Albers, Stefan Hoeft
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007
This study deals with the problem of retaking identical or parallel mental ability tests. This can lead to difficulties in the assessment for prestigious jobs like pilot or ab initio pilot candidate positions, where test preparation is common and a large training industry has been established. We investigated practice effects on test-takers’ performance and reliability as well as validity of a spatial ability task. The task was administered ten times, five minutes each, in a sample of 156 ab initio pilot applicants. A performance plateau was reached after the fifth trial, reliability and validity were not affected negatively, they even …
Using Likelihood Alert Technology In Cockpit Displays Of Traffic Information To Support Free Flight, Ernesto A. Bustamante
Using Likelihood Alert Technology In Cockpit Displays Of Traffic Information To Support Free Flight, Ernesto A. Bustamante
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007
The future of air traffic control imposes two major challenges. On the one hand, the increase in air traffic flow will dramatically augment the already existing high levels of workload for air traffic controllers. As a result, this increase in traffic density may jeopardize flight safety. On the other hand, standard aircraft separation tactics commanded by air traffic controllers are neither optimally efficient nor cost effective. Consequently, this makes it difficult for airlines to maintain an economic advantage. A potential solution to these problems is the introduction of free flight. The main goal of free flight is to reduce the …

Decision Support For Airport Surface Management And Control, Charles E. Billings, Philip J. Smith, Amy Spencer
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007
Continual increases in air traffic have threatened to produce gridlock in parts of the national aviation system (NAS). Efforts to improve NAS efficiency and throughput by incorporating decision support tools (DSTs) and other automation have been difficult because of NAS complexity and unpredictability. We describe some of the more important recent studies of airport surface management and offer suggestions for further improvement.
