Cocaine produces a persistent reduction in cystine–glutamate exchange via system x_c− in the nucleus accumbens that may contribute to pathological glutamate signaling linked to addiction. System x_c− influences glutamate neurotransmission by maintaining basal, extracellular glutamate in the nucleus accumbens, which, in turn, shapes synaptic activity by stimulating group II metabotropic glutamate autoreceptors. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that a long-term reduction in system x_c− activity is part of the plasticity produced by repeated cocaine that results in the establishment of compulsive drug seeking. Purpose

The Vitrea 2 imaging software (Vital Images Inc, Minnetonka, MN) was used for the volume analysis of the proximal tibial metaphysis.

Materials and Methods

Eighteen computed tomography scans of the proximal tibia were processed through the software, and 3-dimensional imaging of the proximal tibia was reconstructed.

Results

The volume and area of the proximal tibia that were generated resulted in a mean area of 127 cm² and a mean volume of 77.2 cm².

Conclusion

This study supports the use of the proximal tibial metaphysis as a source of low to moderate volume of autologous bone. When …

A 26-year-old male presented with a 2-month history of a mildly painful, slow growing, nodular mass of the submental region. Examination revealed a 1.5 x 1.0-cm midline swelling of the submental region. The skin over the mass appeared normal. The mass was firm and slightly tender on palpation and appeared to be positioned within the submental space. Intraoral examination did not reveal any obvious pathologic findings and the nearby teeth showed no caries, periodontal disease, or mobility. The patient’s medical history was unremarkable.

Purpose: This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Dyadic Relationship Scale (DRS), which measures negative and positive dyadic interactions from the perspective of both the patient and the family caregiver. An important aspect of evaluating the DRS was that it be statistically sound and meaningful for both members of the dyad. Design and Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design. Stressful events before or just after parturition alter the subsequent phenotypical response to stress in a general process termed programming. Hypoxia during the period before and during parturition, and in the postnatal period, is one of the most common causes of perinatal distress, morbidity, and mortality. We have found that perinatal hypoxia (prenatal day 19 to postnatal day 14) augmented the corticosterone response to stress and increased basal corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA levels in the parvocellular portion of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) in 6-month-old rats. Purpose: This integrated review was conducted to evaluate the factors that inhibit or promote decisions by African American and Hispanic women to obtain cervical cancer screening.

Data sources: Research articles were identified using MEDLINE, PubMed, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health literature, published between 1999 and 2005.

Conclusions: Cervical cancer screening practices of African American and Hispanic women were influenced by extrinsic motivators including lack of insurance, no usual source of health care, acculturation, and socioeconomic factors. Intrinsic motivators were related to beliefs and perceptions of vulnerability, such as ignoring cervical cancer screening when no symptoms were present; …

Purpose: The addition of anionic charge on denture base resins has been shown to inhibit Candida albicans adhesion and to facilitate adsorption of salivary defense molecules. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of a modified denture base resin for denture fabrication.

Materials and Methods: Specimens made from heat polymerizing resin Lucitone 199 were used as the control group. The magnitude of failure in voluntary drive after fatiguing contractions of different intensities in men and women is not known. The purpose of this study was to compare the time to task failure and voluntary activation of men and women for a sustained isometric contraction performed at a low and high intensity with the elbow flexor muscles. Nine men and nine women sustained an isometric contraction at 20% and 80% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force until task failure during separate sessions. Root fractures involve damage to pulp, cementum, dentin, and periodontal ligaments. These injuries affect 0.5% to 7% of permanent teeth. Cervical root fractures are less frequently seen and have a worse prognosis compared with the fractures in the apical or middle third of the root. This case report describes the treatment of a cervical root fracture in a maxillary central incisor. After removal of the coronal fragment, the root was filled temporarily with calcium hydroxide and orthodontic extrusion was initiated. At present, there is poor accuracy in assessing cognitive and vegetative symptoms in depression using clinician or self-rated measures, suggesting the need for development of standardized tasks to assess these functions. The current study assessed the psychometric properties and diagnostic specificity of a brief neuropsychological screening battery designed to assess core signs of depression; psychomotor retardation, attention and executive functioning difficulties, and impaired emotion perception within an outpatient psychiatry setting. Three hundred eighty-four patients with mood disorders and 77 healthy volunteers participated. A retrospective study was carried out on the dental trauma records of 93 patients (55 boys, 38 girls) with 129 crown-fractured teeth. The patients’ average age was 9.57 years (SD 1.57), ranging between 7 and 15 years. Uncomplicated crown facture (comprising enamel–dentin) was the most observed type of injury (n = 107, 83%). Only 15 patients (16.13%) sought treatment in less than 24 h following the injury. Of 41 injured teeth (31.79%) the apices were open at the time of presentation at the clinic. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that an intact cerebellar fastigial nucleus (CFN) is an important determinant of CO₂-H⁺ sensitivity during wakefulness. Bilateral, stainless steel microtubules were implanted into the CFN (N = 9) for injection (0.5–10 μl) of the neurotoxin ibotenic acid. Two or more weeks after implantation of the microtubules, eupneic breathing and CO₂-H⁺ sensitivity did not differ significantly (P > 0.10) from pre-implantation conditions. NMDA receptors are important molecular targets of ethanol action in the CNS. Previous studies have identified a site in membrane-associated domain 3 (M3) of the NR1 subunit and two sites in M4 of the NR2A subunit that influence alcohol action; the sites in NR2A M4 also regulate ion channel gating. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human premolars were collected. The premolars were randomly divided into three groups of 20 teeth. All three groups were direct bonded. Background.

Myopericytoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of pericytic cells demonstrating myoid differentiation. The lesion typically arises within the subcutaneous tissue of the extremities. We report a case that, to the best of our knowledge, is the first case of myopericytoma involving the soft tissue of the oral cavity.

Methods.

A 36-year-old woman had a 5-mm sessile, whitish-pink, firm tongue nodule. The patient underwent excisional biopsy, and histopathologic examination as well as immunohistochemical analysis were performed.

Results.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cytotoxicity and bactericidal effects of chloramine-T.

METHODS: In vitro study of various concentrations and exposure times to preparations containing human fibroblasts or 1.5 x 10⁸ colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL) of 3 gram-positive bacteria-Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S aureus, and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis-and 2 gram-negative bacteria-Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa-with and without fetal bovine serum present.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Percentage reduction of bacterial growth and percentage of viable fibroblasts 48 hours after exposure.

The Clinical Focus Program was designed to prepare senior nursing students for the transition to practice in the hospital setting. Through a series of 1:1 precepted clinical experiences, the students developed a broad base of clinical competencies and self-confidence in their nursing skills. Hospitals experienced reduced costs related to orientation and recruitment of new graduate nurses. The program also was valuable in building a network of collegiality and scholarship between education and practice environments.

Activation of the cAMP pathway is an important mediator of chronic muscle pain. This study examined phosphorylation of the transcription factor cAMP-response-element-binding protein (p-CREB) and the NR1 subunit of the NMDA receptor (p-NR1) in the spinal cord. Bilateral mechanical hyperalgesia of the paw was induced by administering two injections of acidic saline, 5 days apart, into the gastrocnemius muscle of male Sprague–Dawley rats. The proportion of spinothalamic neurons that expressed p-NR1 or p-CREB did not change in the dorsal horn 24 h after the second intramuscular acid injection compared with animals that received pH 7.2 injections. A 16-year-old male underwent bilateral sagittal split osteotomy of the mandible to correct a mandibular deficiency. Twenty-one years later, a routine panoramic radiograph revealed a radiolucent lesion on the left side of the mandible. The lesion was biopsied. As the patient did not have symptoms and the lesion was connected to the inferior alveolar nerve, the lesion was not totally excised in order to preserve nerve function. The histological features were consistent with traumatic neuroma, and no further surgical procedure was planned.

Objective: To compare as-received copper-nickel-titanium (CuNiTi) archwires to those used in patients by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Also, the thermal or phase properties of 27°C, 35°C, and 40°C CuNiTi archwires were studied to ascertain if their properties match those indicated by the manufacturer.

In this descriptive study we employ episodic narrative interviews and narrative analysis to explore experiences of abuse and violence within the families of origin of Mexican women entering adulthood. Twenty-four Mexican women, 18 years of age and about to graduate from a residential school in central Mexico, were interviewed about life in their families of origin. Participants were from several Mexican states and of low socioeconomic status. Nineteen of the participants described either witnessing or experiencing violence or abuse within their families.
