The clinical benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) have been well documented in heart failure patients. In veterinary medicine, however, the clinical benefits of CoQ10 have not been well established in dogs with heart diseases. This study aimed to determine the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on 1) preventing myocardial injury 2) cardiac function 3) autonomic balance in dogs with myxomatous degenerative mitral valve disease (MMVD). Thirteen dogs with MMVD at ACVIM stage C were recruited in this study. Dogs were further divided into group I (Body weight [BW] < 6 kg.; n = 7) and group II (BW ≥ 6 kg.; n = 6). Cardiac troponin I (cTnI), echocardiographic examination, and 2 hours of Holter recording were performed on Day 0 and after receiving CoQ10 at 100 mg/dog twice daily for 28 days. CoQ10 caused a reduction of cTnI level in 71% of the dogs. Median cTnI tended to cause tended to decline but not significantly. Systolic function [i.e. fractional shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF)] increased significantly by 8 % and 9% (P < 0.05), respectively in group I after CoQ10 supplementation. Other echocardiographic parameters were not altered in either group. HRV analysis revealed no change in autonomic function and balance. cTnI negatively correlated with FS (P < 0.01) and positively correlated with LF/HF ratio (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated the clinical benefits of CoQ10 supplementation in dogs with MMVD. CoQ10 improves cardiac function in small dogs with MMVD. Finally, supplementation of CoQ10 in dogs should be based on body weight.

Long-Term Effect Of Low-Dose Imatinib Therapy For Pulmonary Hypertension Due To Chronic Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease In Six Dogs, Zi Ping Leong, Shinji Arita, Yoshiaki Hikasa
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Six dogs were diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension (PH) secondary to chronic degenerative mitral valve disease (CDMVD) on echocardiography. Imatinib (3 mg/kg, every 24 hours, PO) was initiated without any changes to the background therapy to treat the PH. Follow-up evaluations at 1, 3, 5 and 6 months revealed substantial clinical and hemodynamic improvements. One dog showed deterioration after the imatinib withdrawal to necessitate a restart therapy. No side effects were observed throughout the 6-month treatment course. Low-dose imatinib may provide a promising treatment alternative for CDMVD-associated PH in dogs.

The Effect Of The Nematode Trapping Fungus Duddingtonia Flagrans Against Gastronintestinal Nematodes Of Exotic Ruminant Hoofstock At Disney's(R) Animal Kingdom Lodge, Kristen Renee Young
LSU Master's Theses
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) can severely affect the performance of ruminant animals and may lead to an animal’s death in a severe, untreated infection. Zoological parks, which have used anthelmintic drugs for treatment of GIN, are now seeing evidence of drug resistant parasites (Garretson et al., 2009). Duddingtonia flagrans, a nematophagous fungus, has shown a reduction in larvae of coprocultures of exotic ruminants through feed administration at Disney's® Animal Kingdom Lodge (DAKL) and has potential to biologically control forage larvae (Terry, 2013). This study evaluated the effectiveness of Duddingtonia flagrans, administered to exotic ruminant hoofstock at a daily …

Zika virus (ZIKV) causes no-to-mild symptoms or severe neurological disorders. To investigate the importance of viral and host genetic variations in determining ZIKV infection outcomes, we created three full-length infectious cDNA clones as bacterial artificial chromosomes for each of three spatiotemporally distinct and genetically divergent ZIKVs: MR-766 (Uganda, 1947), P6-740 (Malaysia, 1966), and PRVABC-59 (Puerto Rico, 2015). Using the three molecularly cloned ZIKVs, together with 13 ZIKV region-specific polyclonal antibodies covering nearly the entire viral protein-coding region, we made three conceptual advances: (i) We created a comprehensive genome-wide portrait of ZIKV gene products and their related species, with several previously …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Hematology and serum chemistry reference intervals have been previously established for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) as an imperative measure for health assessments. Monitoring the health of the wild population depends upon reference intervals that are context specific; hence we developed reference intervals from fresh samples, as opposed to frozen, from wild monk seals. This study builds on the number of parameters from previous efforts by using samples collected between 2004 and 2015 from wild monk seals. Blood samples were analyzed by a single veterinary diagnostic laboratory within 24 hr of collection from apparently healthy, wild …

Dynamic evolutionary processes and complex structure make the Y chromosome among the most diverse and least understood regions in mammalian genomes. Here, we present an annotated assembly of the male specific region of the horse Y chromosome (eMSY), representing the first comprehensive Y assembly in odd-toed ungulates. The eMSY comprises single-copy, equine specific multi-copy, PAR transposed, and novel ampliconic sequence classes. The eMSY gene density approaches that of autosomes with the highest number of retained X–Y gametologs recorded in eutherians, in addition to novel Y-born and transposed genes. Horse, donkey and mule testis RNAseq reveals several candidate genes for stallion …

We wanted to study whether kisspeptin modulates plasma LH and FSH levels and ovarian follicular dynamics in buffaloes and whether kisspeptin can be used for fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI). We carried out these studies in comparison with buserelin, a potent GnRH agonist. Kisspeptin dose-dependently increased plasma LH levels. However, the kisspeptin-induced increase in LH was short-lived as the peak reached in 15–30 min returned to basal values by 1–2 h. The kisspeptin-induced increase in LH level was less compared to buserelin-induced increase in LH level which sustained …

Melanoma accounts for 90% of skin cancer-related deaths in humans. Treatment options for metastatic melanoma in people is very limited. Melanoma is considered to be an immunogenic tumor, spurring interest in development of immunotherapies for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. Oncolytic virotherapy has been widely investigated. The first ever oncolytic virotherapy to receive FDA-approval is an HSV-1-based virus (Talimogene Laherperavec (T-Vec) or Imlygic) containing a transgene for human GM-CSF to enhance anti-tumor immune responses after injection. Durable response rate in human patients was only 16% despite impressive efficacy in anti-tumor effects in vitro and in murine tumor models. Novel viruses …

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) infections contribute to the bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC), which is a multi-factorial disorder involving co-infections of viruses and bacteria including mycoplasma. BRDC causes great economic losses to the United States feedlot industry. BVDV infection induces immunosuppression in infected animals. BVDV Npro binds and degrades the transcription factor interferon regulatory factor-3 (IRF-3) and effectively blocks type I interferon (type I IFN) expression in host cells. BRSV nonstructural proteins, NS1 and NS2, block activation of IRF-3. In calves, concurrent infection with BVDV and BRSV resulted in more severe clinical …
