Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus are important mosquito vectors for many infectious diseases. A number of factors affect the vector competence of these mosquitoes for a specific pathogen. The bacteria harbored in the midgut are known to influence mosquito physiology and can alter the response to various pathogens. Bacteria from the midgut of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus were cultured and identified using bacteriological and molecular techniques in this study in which two groups of mosquitoes were examined. The first group was laboratory- reared, and the second group were field- collected mosquitoes from Bangkok. Twelve bacterial genera ( i. e. …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Oxidative stress can result from either the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or an impaired antioxidant system, or both. It causes damage to lipids, proteins and DNA. Therefore, oxidative stress may be involved in carcinogenesis, and is associated with many types of cancer in dogs. The objective of this study was to compare the levels of malondialdehyde, protein hydroperoxides, glutathione, retinol and alpha-tocopherol between dogs with mast cell tumors and clinically healthy controls. Blood samples were obtained from eighteen clinically healthy dogs and fourteen dogs with spontaneous mast cell tumors. Malondialdehyde and protein hydroperoxides levels were measured by …

The use of sentinel animals in animal research facilities is the cornerstone of animal health monitoring for exposure to natural pathogens of laboratory animals. This is because infection with these pathogens produces no overt signs of disease yet the infection may affect the outcome of research utilising these animals. One of the important pathogens includes Klebsiella pneumoniae, whose prevalence can be high in laboratory animals. This study sought to document the prevalence of K. pneumoniae and other undocumented bacterial pathogens in laboratory rodents for a 3- year period. K. pneumoniae and Chryseobacterium gleum were isolated from sentinel ICR mice housed …

Review Of The Cardiovascular Toxicity Of Amitriptyline Treatment For Canine Neuropathic Pain, Saikaew Sutayatram, Kumpanart Soontornvipart, Piyasiri Glangosol
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Nowadays, the lifespan of pets has been increased by improvements in veterinary practice but age-related disorders are also increasing. Several nervous system attenuations are well-known to be the result of aging and/or pathological lesions. In many cases, neuropathic pain (NP) can develop and cause a significant impact on the clinical outcome and quality of life. With the difficulty in identification of the specific cause of NP, most NP management is planned according to clinical manifestations and recommended trial therapy. The drug of choice for trial therapy seems to be amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant with multiple effects on neurotransmitter receptors and …

Comparative Effect Of Dl-Methionine And Dl-Methionine Hydroxy Analogue Supplemented Diet On Productive Performance, Fat Accumulation And Lipid Profile In Blood Of Meat-Type Ducks, Chanwit Kaewtapee, Chaiyapoom Bunchasak
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The objective of this study was to compare the effect of DL-methionine (DLM) and DL-methionine hydroxy analogue (DL-MHA) supplementation on the growth performance, carcass quality, fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood of meat-type duck. Three hundred male Cherry Valley ducks were divided into 3 groups with 4 replications of 25 ducklings each. Each group was given a diet as follows: 1) basal diet, 2) basal diet + DLM, and 3) basal diet + DLMHA. The results show that dietary supplementation with DLM and DL-MHA increased body weight (P<0.01), feed intake (P<0.01) and pectoralis major (P<0.05), but decreased abdominal fat (P<0.01) when compared to the basal diet. Supplementation with DL-MHA also resulted in greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05), low-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) and cholesterol (P<0.05) in the blood compared to the DLM group, in addition to greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05) and high-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. Furthermore, supplementation with DLM was shown to lower the level of plasma uric acid (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. It is concluded that DL-MHA can promote the same productive performance in meat-type ducks as DLM, but the fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood was greater with the DL-MHA supplementation than with DLM. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of different effects between DL-MHA and DLM on the lipid metabolism in ducks should be further investigated.

Recent advances in genomic sequencing technology and computational assembly methods have allowed scientists to improve reference genome assemblies in terms of contiguity and composition. EquCab2, a reference genome for the domestic horse, was released in 2007. Although of equal or better quality compared to other first-generation Sanger assemblies, it had many of the shortcomings common to them. In 2014, the equine genomics research community began a project to improve the reference sequence for the horse, building upon the solid foundation of EquCab2 and incorporating new short-read data, long-read data, and proximity ligation data. Here, we present EquCab3. The count of …

The effects of an exogenous androgenic hormone on sex differentiation were examined in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) fry. Tilapia aquaculture in Thailand commonly applies methyltestosterone at the dose of 80 mg/kg diet on the first feeding of fish fry for 21-28 days to achieve male-monosex crop. In this study, male sex reversal was induced with an alternative androgenic hormone, 17α- methyldihydrotestosterone (MDHT), at a dose of 80 mg/kg diet for shorter periods; 5, 10, 15, or 20 days. Microscopic examination of fish gonad stained with aceto-carmine was used to determine male and female fish fry …

Toxoplasmosis and neosporosis are parasitic diseases of livestock globally. In this study, we investigate the presence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in 250 beef cattle from Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Nakhon Patom provinces, Thailand comparing with the results from 5 years earlier. The serological diagnosis for toxoplasmosis and neosporosis were performed by indirect ELISA technique using recombinant antigens TgGRA7 and NcSAG1, respectively. Furthermore, risk factors at the animal- and herd-levels were also evaluated. Seroprevalence of T. gondii, N. caninum and co-infections were 15.2%, 20.8% and 27.2%, respectively. In comparison to the results from 5 years earlier, seropositivity of N. caninum …

The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) belong to nuclear receptor superfamily acting as transcription factors related to lipid and glucose metabolism. There are 3 subtypes including PPARα, PPAR, and PPAR. PPARα and PPAR activations can inhibit tumor cell proliferation and differentiation in many cell types. However, the expressions of these receptors in canine mammary tissue are still unknown. This study was performed to investigate the expressions of PPARα and PPAR in normal, benign, and malignant canine mammary tissues. Twenty four bitches at the age of 5-15 years old, which undergone unilateral mastectomy, were used in the study. Mammary tissues were sectioned …
