The Role Of Resveratrol On Mast Cell And Chymase And Tryptase Expression In Blunt-Chesttrauma-Induced Acute Lung Injury In Rats, Şeri̇fe Tütüncü, Aysun Çağlar Torun, Tuğrul Ertuğrul
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Acute lung injury is a clinical symptom that can cause morbidity, acute respiratory failure, and risk of developing pneumonia. Mast cells are found more commonly in places where antigens can enter the body, such as skin and respiratory and digestive systems, which enables them to be among the first groups of cell to act in the defense mechanism against foreign matter entry. Resveratrol is an active substance which is found in the structure of many plants and which can be used against pathogens due to its antimicrobial effect. The aim of our study is to show the degranulation and heterogeneity …

Across-Breed Genomic Prediction For Body Weight In Siberian Cattle Populations, Burak Karacaören
Across-Breed Genomic Prediction For Body Weight In Siberian Cattle Populations, Burak Karacaören
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Body weight (BW) is an important heritable phenotype and related to other functional and production traits in cattle. The past decade has seen an increase in emphasis on genome wide association studies (GWAS) for detecting single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are associated with quantitative phenotypes. Prediction of phenotypes using across-breed GWAS information [genomic prediction (GP)] is an also important research area but received less attention from the community. Understanding the link between major genes and common ancestors within and between breeds will contribute to a deeper understanding of GP across breeds. The aims of the present study were two-fold: 1) …

Herbal Feed Additives Containing Tannins: Impact On In Vitro Fermentation And Methanemitigation From Total Mixed Ration, Manju Wadhwa, Prabh Kaur Sidhu, Mohinder Pal Singh Bakshi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Total mixed ration (TMR) containing roughage and concentrate mixture in a 65: 35 ratio on dry matter (DM) basis was supplemented with herbal feed additives [(HFAs); Acacia catechu (Katha), Areca catechu (Supari), and Acacia nilotica (Babul)] at 0-4% on DM basis to assess their impact on fermentation pattern and methane production by using in vitro gas production technique. Areca catechu had the highest (P < 0.01) concentration of condensed tannins (CTs), saponins, and vitamin C as compared to other HFAs. The net gas production (NGP), digestibility of NDF and true OM, and ME availability, partitioning factor (PF), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and microbial biomass production were higher (P < 0.01) at 24 h as compared to t-half incubation, irrespective of type and level of HFAs supplemented. Acacia nilotica had an edge over Acacia catechu with respect to digestibility of nutrients and ME availability. VFAs production and efficiency of rumen fermentation was the highest from the Areca catechu-supplemented TMR. Irrespective of type of HFAs and incubation period, the digestibility of NDF and that of true OM were highest (P < 0.01) at the 1% level of supplementation, but depressed thereafter. Amongst HFAs-supplemented groups, VFA production and fermentation efficiency were highest at the 2% level. The results conclusively revealed that supplementing Areca catechu and Acacia nilotica at 2% of TMR (DM basis) inhibited the methane production, without affecting the fermentation pattern.

Strongylus vulgaris (S. vulgaris) is known as the equin's most pathogenic nematode due to the extraintestinal migration in mesenteric arterial vessels. Since a few kinds of S. vulgaris can threat the animals' health and working efficiency, high precision and early detection of strongylid nematodes is essential. Traditionally, the larval coproculture method was used frequently for identification of strongylid species. The technique of larval culture is costly, time consuming, and does not have sufficient accuracy and reliability. Here, we critically evaluated the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with larval culture methods for the detection of S. vulgaris eggs in fecal samples. To …

Biosecurity (BS) is a multidimensional preventive medicine approach that has health, technical, and financial aspects. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences of the BS scores belonging to the livestock enterprises depending on the geographical region and breeding types and to predict the socioeconomic factors having an impact over the BS level. The study was conducted with 517 breeders who live in 7 different regions of Turkey. The results have revealed that the enterprises performing "beef cattle fattening and dairy cattle breeding together" have higher BS scores than the enterprises in the other breeding category (P < 0.01). The differences between the technical and financial scores according to geographical regions were statistically significant (P < 0.01). The regions categorized as "wes" have the highest score and "south" have the lowest score. It was determined that as the "educational level of the breeder" and "enterprise scale" increased, the BS score significantly went up. The regression model was found significant as a whole (P < 0.01) and the independent variables explained the variation in the technical and financial BS scores to be 14.6% and 12.7%, respectively. Dissemination of education/training practices and increasing enterprise scales will positively affect the level of BS in the sector.

This study was divided into two parts. In the first part, the fluid absorption properties of these four beddings were studied using measurement of liquid absorption and the surface moisture. The results showed that the volumetric absorbency of aspen shaving was significantly higher than other beddings. While, the surface moisture showed …

The Study Of Changes In Gene Regulation Of Serotonin Signaling Pathway And Circulating Serotonin Concentration In Dogs With Pulmonary Hypertension Due To Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease, Nattawan Tangmahakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is an abnormal increase in pulmonary vascular pressure. In dogs, PH is commonly found secondary to degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD), especially in small breed dogs. Serotonin, a biogenic amine playing an essential role in both physiology and abnormalities of several organs, is a vasoactive substance that has been one of the suspicious mediators for the development of PH. Both local and circulating effects of serotonin have been investigated to discover the involvement of serotonin and the pathogenesis of PH in both humans and animals. The present study aimed to investigate the local serotonin signaling in lung …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Nineteen dogs diagnosed of cranial cruciate ligament rupture were included in this study before TPLO was performed. They were classified into 3 groups which consisted of control, low-level laser therapy class 1M and low-level laser therapy class 4 groups. The number of each group were 4, 8 and 7 dogs, respectively, and the duration of treatment protocol was 4 weeks consecutively. On the first day of the study, dogs were examined and assessed of the clinical signs such as lameness score, synovial fluid analysis, canine brief pain inventory questionnaire (CBPI) and ultrasonographic score. In ultrasonographic monitoring, ultrasonographic scores on synovial …
