Isoetes Toximontana (Isoetaceae), A New Quillwort With Green Megaspores From The Northern Cape Of South Africa, Lytton John Musselman, J. P. Roux
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Isoetes toximontana is only the second quillwort reported from the Northern Cape region in South Africa. It occurs in shallow water on the Gifberg. Megaspores are uniformly tuberculate on the proximal surface; their distal surfaces may have occasional rugi along with bullae. They are olive green when dry. Microspores are brown and aculeate. Preliminary field studies suggest that an unexpected diversity of quillworts is found in this region.

The Use Of Aflp To Detect Genetic Differentiation Within And Among Populations Of Two Prairie Plant Species: Panicum Virgatum And Coreopsis Palmata, Christopher Andrew Hilker
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The degree of genetic diversity within any species is crucial to its survival with respect to environmental stresses and its ability to adapt. As native Iowa prairie plant populations continues to diminish, genetic diversity within the state becomes crucially important for restoration, reconstruction, and conservation efforts. This study seeks to determine the degree of genetic variation within native Iowa populations of Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) and Coreopsis palmata (prairie coreopsis, tickseed, prairie tickseed). Plants were obtained directly from the tallgrass prairie, from native seed plantings, and from greenhouse grown cultivated varieties (switchgrass). Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLP) provided genetic fingerprints of …

Seasonal Variations In The Biomass Of Macro-Algal Communities From The Gulf Of Antalya (North-Eastern Mediterranean), İsmai̇l İbrahi̇m Turna, Ö. Osman Ertan, Mario Cormaci, Giovanni Furnari
Turkish Journal of Botany
In this study, the seasonal variations in the macro-algal biomass in the Gulf of Antalya (north-eastern Mediterranean) were investigated. The seasonal variations of the macro-algal biomass were found to be related to the biology of the abundant species during less favourable seasons. These variations occurred usually as a result of a significant reduction in algal density [Padina pavonica (L.) J.V.Lamour., Dasycladus vermicularis (Scopoli) Krasser, Chondrophycus papillosus (C.Agardh) Garbay & Harper] or loss of major part of their thallus [Cystoseira spp., Liagora distenta (Mertens ex Roth) J.V.Lamour., Liagora viscida (Forssk.) C.Agardh]. The highest values of biomass were found to be in …

\Alpha -Difluoromethylornithine Inhibits The Growth Of Fungus Macrophomina Phaseoli, Narçin Palavan Ünsal, Ayşin Çotuk, Yeşi̇m Kalaç Martini
Turkish Journal of Botany
\alpha -Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a specific enzyme activated inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of the fungus Macrophomina phaseoli (Tassi) Goidanich. Putrescine (Put), when added to the nutrient medium at a concentration of 0.25 mM, decreased the inhibitory effect of DFMO. These results suggest that polyamines (PAs) are essential for the growth of fungi and that DFMO is applicable to the alleviation or prevention of crop losses due to phytopathogenic fungi.

Age Mediated Effects On The Alternative Respiratory Pathway In Leaves Of Rhodiola Rosea And Ajuga Reptans, Natalia V. Pystina, Roman A. Danilov
Turkish Journal of Botany
The influence of aging processes on respiration and the ratio of respiratory pathways in the leaves of Rhodiola rosea L. and Ajuga reptans L. under natural conditions was investigated. Young leaves had a higher respiration rate and higher activity of the alternative respiratory pathway than did mature leaves. The capacity of the alternative respiratory pathway did not show significant differences between the young and mature leaves of R. rosea and increased in the mature leaves of A. reptans (from 60% up to 88%). This fact may be explained by the higher requirements of growing tissues for metabolites. In this case, …
