Effect Of Indole-3-Butyric Acid On In Vitro Root Development In Lentil (Lens Culinaris Medik.), Khalid Mahmood Khawar, Sebahatti̇n Özcan
Turkish Journal of Botany
Lentil is an important crop of the family Leguminosae and is notoriously recalcitrant to rooting in vitro. Shoots of cultivar \"Ali Dayı\" of lentil obtained after culturing seeds for 10 days on MS medium were isolated and rooted on MS medium containing indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/l. The primary response was obtained after 4 weeks; 0.25 mg/l IBA gave the best results, with a rooting percentage of 25%, mean number of 7.87 roots along with mean root length of 7.13 cm. However, all other concentrations of IBA failed to induce roots.

Extraction Of Silymarin Compounds From Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) Seed Using Hot, Liquid Water As The Solvent, J. F. Alvarez Barreto, D. Julie Carrier, E. C. Clausen
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
High-value specialty chemicals are usually obtained from natural products by extracting with generally regarded as safe (GRAS) solvents. Because organic solvents are quite often used, high operating and disposal costs occur. When compared to traditional solvents, water is an interesting alternative because of its low operating and disposal costs. Milk thistle contains compounds (taxifolin, silychristin, silydianin, silybinin A, and silybinin B) that display hepatoxic protection properties. This paper examines the batch extraction of silymarin compounds from milk thistle seed meal in 50°C, 70°C, 85°C and 100°C water as a function of time. For taxifolin, silychristin, silybinin A, and silybinin B, …

Growth, Proline Accumulation And Ionic Relations Of Tomato (Lycopersicon Esculentum L.) As Influenced By Nacl And Na_2so_4 Salinity, Ali̇ İnal
Turkish Journal of Botany
Salinity depresses ion activities, decreases the ratios of plant nutrients to Na and Cl ions, and consecutively suppresses plant growth. The objective of the present study was to distinguish the effects of NaCl and Na_2SO_4 salinity on the growth, ionic relations and proline accumulation of tomato plants. Tomato plants were grown for two months. Plant growth was reduced, but proline accumulation was enhanced by salinity. Total N and NO_3-N content of plants were decreased by both NaCl and Na_2SO_4 salinity. Sulphur content was not affected by the salt treatments. Salinity caused nutrient imbalances. The Na and Cl contents of plants …
Changes In Abscisic Acid And Indole-3-Acetic Acid Concentrations In Funalia Trogii (Berk.) Bondartsev & Singer And Phanerochaete Chrysosporium Burds. Me446 Subjected To Salt Stress, Serpi̇l Ünyayar
Turkish Journal of Botany
Variations in abscisic acid (ABA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) concentrations were studied in Funalia trogii (Berk.) Bondartsev & Singer and Phanerochaete chrysosporium Burds. ME446 subjected to salt stress. The levels of ABA and IAA were determined by gas chromatography (GC) and UV-VIS spectrophotometry. The levels of hormones vary in the regulation of growth and in response to stress. It was found that ABA concentrations were higher in the salt stressed groups than in the control groups, whereas IAA concentrations were lower. These results show that, in fungi, ABA concentrations are positively and IAA concentrations negatively correlated with salt stress.

Combinatorial Control Of Yeast Fet4 Gene Expression By Iron, Zinc, And Oxygen, Brian M. Waters, David J. Eide
Combinatorial Control Of Yeast Fet4 Gene Expression By Iron, Zinc, And Oxygen, Brian M. Waters, David J. Eide
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Acquisition of metals such as iron, copper, and zinc by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is tightly regulated. High affinity uptake systems are induced under metal-limiting conditions to maintain an adequate supply of these essential nutrients. Low affinity uptake systems function when their substrates are in greater supply. The FET4 gene encodes a low affinity iron and copper uptake transporter. FET4 expression is regulated by several environmental factors. In this report, we describe the molecular mechanisms underlying this regulation. First, we found that FET4 expression is induced in iron-limited cells by the Aft1 iron-responsive transcriptional activator. Second, FET …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Eastern White Pine Regeneration In The Northwestern Ohio Oak Stand, Scott R. Abella, Neil W. Macdonald
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) was often associated with oaks (Quercus spp.) on upland sites in presettlement forests of the upper Great Lakes region, but widespread logging and subsequent fires in the late 1800s converted these upland sites to fire-tolerant oak forests. Although white pine regeneration is occurring in these second-growth oak forests, white pine regeneration patterns in oak forests of the Great Lakes region are not well documented. We examined white pine regeneration in the southern Great Lakes region in an oak stand within the Oak Openings region of northwestern Ohio, where white pine plantations established in the …
