Bloodroot is an herbaceous perennial that grows from a persistent, branched underground stem or rhizome. Early each spring, while the forest canopy is still bare, each well-developed rhizome tip produces one leaf and one flower stalk. The leaf is kidney-shaped in its overall outline, but it is also divided into a pattern of rounded lobes and sinuses, rendering a complex overall shape. At flowering time, bloodroot leaves form a loose vertically-oriented collar around the flower stalk with the bluish-green lower leaf surface forming the outside of the collar; as the season progresses, the leaves open flat and expand to their …

This study serves as a checklist of the myxomycetes of Trabzon and Giresun provinces, Turkey. Sixty-one myxomycete were identified, 20 of which were collected in the field and 41 grown in moist chamber culture. Seasonal variations in the composition, density and diversity of the epipelic diatom assemblages were investigated monthly from March, 1999, to September, 2000, at 8 sampling sites chosen in the littoral of İzmit Bay. The main physical and chemical parameters, which affected species composition and density, were also measured on every sampling date. During the study period, 3 centric and 41 pennate diatoms were recorded in the epipelic diatom flora of the bay. Achnanthes Bory spp., Amphora exigua W.Greg. and Navicula tripunctata (O.Müll.) Based on published records, in Turkey 3 species of Anthocerotopsida, 163 species and intraspecific taxa of Hepaticopsida and 721 species and intraspecific taxa of Bryopsida are recognised. They are listed in alphabetical order in a reference list to achieve a certain standardisation in the use of names. Including synonyms, in total 1731 names are treated. Critical taxa, doubtful records or taxonomical remarks are briefly discussed in 77 annotations. In addition, an up-to-date list of 219 references (from 1829 to January 2004) on the bryological literature of Turkey is given. This research was carried out in 2002 and 2003 in order to determine the flora of Kalecik Mountain. The research area is situated in Şanlıurfa province and within C7 of the grid system. In the area, 238 taxa belonging to 39 families, and 140 genera, were determined. Of all the collected specimens, 28 taxa are new records for C7, and 13 (5.46%) taxa are endemic for Turkey. Purification And Partial Characterisation Of An Acid Lipase In Germinating Lipidbody Linseedlings, Reda Helmy Ahmed Sammour

Electrophoretic analysis of germinating linseed proteins showed a gradual decrease in the quantity of a protein with a molecular weight of 42 kDa. This protein accumulates after 36 h of germination in synchronisation with an increase in lipase activity, and a decrease in the quantity of the total lipids. The 42 kDa subunit was found to be a lipid body membrane protein. This protein was isolated and identified by immunoprecipitation as a subunit of lipase. The linseed lipase acted on a wide range of triacylglycerols and had optimal activity at pH 4.7. The activity of the enzyme was slightly affected …

This research details the flora of Erciyes Dağı, situated in the province of Kayseri in Central Anatolia, entirely within the Irano-Turanian phytogeographic region. A total of 2554 plant specimens were collected from the research area between 1996 and 2002. An evaluation of these specimens revealed 89 families, 433 genera and 1170 taxa (1116 species, 31 subspecies and 23 varieties). Of the 1170 taxa, 11 are pteridophytes, 12 gymnosperms and 1147 angiosperms (979 dicotyledons and 168 monocotyledons). Of these taxa, 36 are cultivars. In Vitro Mass Propagation Of Cucumis Sativus L. From Nodal Segments, Naseem Ahmad, Mohammad Anis

An efficient reproducible protocol for the in vitro multiplication of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), an important vegetable crop, was developed from nodal explants. Addition of casein hydrolysate to the shoot induction medium (MS + BA) significantly enhanced the number of multiple shoots or growth of the regenerants. Optimum shoot regeneration was observed on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1.0 µM 6-benzyladenine (BA) and (200 mg/l) casein hydrolysate. Rooting of isolated in vitro raised microshoots was readily achieved with (1.0 µM) \alpha-naphthalene-acetic acid (NAA) in 1/2 MS. The plantlets thus obtained were successfully established in a greenhouse.

Floristic Lichen Records From Isparta And Burdur Provinces, Şule Öztürk, Şaban Güvenç, Seyhan Oran

Seventy-three taxa from Isparta and Burdur provinces were identified. Thirty-eight taxa are new records for Isparta province. Two taxa, Collema cristatum (L.) Weber ex F.H.Wigg. and Squamarina cartilaginea (With.) P.James var. pseudocrassa D.Hawksw., were determined from Burdur province and are new records for Burdur.

Padus avium Mill. specimens collected from NE Anatolia, A8 Trabzon, Demirkapı and Arpaözü villages, are described as P. avium Mill. subsp. petraea (Tausch) Pawlowski ex Holub. A line drawing and amended description for the flora of Turkey are given.

Chromosome Counts Of Some Veronica L. (Scrophulariaceae) Species From Iran, Shahryar Saeidi Mehrvarz, Ardashir Kharabian

The chromosome numbers of 10 Veronica L. species belonging to sect. Alsinebe (Griseb.) Lehm. and sect. Beccabunga Griseb. from northern Iran are given. The chromosome numbers for 3 of the 10 studied taxa, i.e. V. siaretensis E. Lehm., V. ceratocarpa C.A.Mey. (2n = 14) and V. hederifolia L. (2n = 36) are presented for the first time. Our results are compared with previous records.

This study concerns the evaluation of 19 vegetative and reproductive characters (7 qualitative and 12 quantitative) among 45 accessions belonging to wild and cultivated tetraploid Triticum L. species: T. turgidum L., T. durum Desf., T. dicoccum (Schrank) Schrebler and T. dicoccoides (Koern. ex Aschers. et Graebn.) Aaronsohn, occurring in Iran. The results of this study show that T. turgidum is a distinct species from T. durum, and T. dicoccum showed high similarity to T. dicoccoides. This research was carried out from 2001 to 2004 in order to determine the flora of Kaşmer Dağı. The research area is situated in Şanlıurfa province and within C7 of the grid system. In the area, 262 taxa belonging to 47 families, and 156 genera were determined. Of all the collected specimens, 33 taxa are new records for C7, and 10 taxa are endemic for Turkey. The distribution of heterochromatin on the chromosomes of V. cracca L. subsp. cracca (2n = 14) and V. bithynica L. (2n = 14) was established with the aid of the C-banding technique. The chromosomes of both species have centromeric C-bands. When compared, prominent bands at the ends of the short arms on 4 chromosomes of V. cracca subsp. cracca were observed, while in V. bithynica only 1 chromosome had a prominent band at the end of the long arm. The endemic Onosma bracteosum Hausskn. & Bornm. (Boraginaceae) was investigated morphologically, anatomically and ecologically. It has setae with tuberculate bases. The stem is 15-35 cm tall and erect. The leaves are equifacial and amphistomatous. Stomata cells are anisocytic and anomocytic. The stomata index is 21.25 for the upper epidermis and 25 for the lower epidermis. This plant generally prefers sandy-loamy, sandy-clayey and loamy soils. In the soil samples, the N (23%), P (26%) and K (27%) concentrations were lower in the generative periods than in the vegetative periods. A check-list of the genus Colchicum L. in the Flora Turkey is presented, with 36 taxa. A list of taxonomical changes that have occurred since the publication of the Flora of Turkey suppl. II is given. Twenty-seven of them are autumn-flowering species (28 taxa), whereas 8 of them are early-spring species. Thirty-five species (36 taxa) are presented, of which 15 are endemic to Turkey.

Thymbra sintenisii Bornm. & Aznav. (Labiatae) is a perennial shrub and is represented in Turkey by 2 subspecies (subsp. sintenisii and subsp. isaurica P.H.Davis). In this study, samples collected from different localities were investigated morphologically and anatomically.The morphological features of various organs of the plant such as the stem, leaf and flower are given in detail. In anatomical studies, transverse sections of the stems, leaves and calyx are illustrated.

The moss specimens collected from Değirmenboğazı and its environment, which were chosen as the research area, were evaluated. A total of 74 taxa belonging to 45 genera and 19 families were identified. Of these, 16 taxa are new records for the B6 grid square in the system adopted by Henderson.

This paper describes a floristic study on Kirmir valley, between Güdül and Yeşilöz district, in Ankara province. The study was carried out during 2000-2003 and 1040 vascular plant specimens were collected. Four hundred and forty-eight wild taxa belonging to 266 genera and 74 families were determined. Furthermore, as for cultivated plants, 45 taxa were determined. The total number of wild and cultivated plant species is 493. Spiral grain, the alignment of wood fibers (tracheids) to the longitudinal axis of trees, is thought to be an indicator of old age and is a phenomenon that has been only studied with destructive sampling methods (cutting down trees). In this study, the usefulness of non-fatal sampling methods and existing methods to quantify spiral grain patterns in living and dead deciduous trees are examined, particularly in white oaks (Quercus alba).
