The Structure And Ultra Structure Of Anther Epidermis And Pollen In Lagerstroemia Indica L. (Lythraceae) In Response To Air Pollution, Farkhondeh Rezanejad
Turkish Journal of Botany
The structure of the anthers and pollen of Lagerstroemia indica L. (crepe myrtles) (Lythraceae) in samples collected from clean and polluted areas was studied by OM, SEM, and TEM. The epidermal cells of the anthers enlarged during anther development. Their cuticle content increased and became thick and folded. The cytoplasm of epidermal cells was peripheral and degenerated in mature anthers. At this time, their major content was phenolic compounds. The epidermal cells in the anthers collected from polluted areas were shrunken, fragile, and burned at the tip, compared to those collected from non-polluted areas. Flavonoid stainability was greater in the …

The Effects Of Ultraviolet Radiation On Some Antioxidant Compounds And Enzymes In Capsicum Annuum L., Kobra Mahdavian, M. Ghorbanli, Khosrow Manochehri Kalantari
Turkish Journal of Botany
Plants have evolved mechanisms to avoid and repair UV radiation damage; it is not surprising that photomorphogenic responses to UV-B and UV-C are often assumed to be adaptations to harmful radiation. Free radicals generated by UV are likely to be involved in the induction of antioxidant defence system. In this study plants were grown for 5 weeks in controlled conditions. Plants were grown in vermiculite medium before applying the UV treatments, and irrigated daily by Hoagland solution for 5 weeks. After 5 weeks, plants were exposed to UV-A (320-390 nm), UV-B (312 nm), and UV-C (254 nm) irradiation with a …

Physicochemical Properties And Fungitoxicity Of The Essential Oil Of Citrus Medica L. Against Groundnut Storage Fungi, Emmanuel Peter Essien, Joseph Peter Essien, Basil Nse Ita, Godwin Asukwo Ebong
Turkish Journal of Botany
The in vitro antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus medica L. on storage fungi of Arachis hypogea L. stored for 6 months was evaluated using the disc diffusion agar method. The oil exhibited a wide spectrum of fungitoxicity, inhibiting all 14 fungus species tested. Thus, the oil can be exploited as a fumigant against storage fungi for the preservation of stored legume seeds due to its wide range of activity, non-phytotoxicity, and long-term persistence of fungitoxicity.

Turkish Journal of Botany
Transverse stem sections of 11 species and 2 subspecies of the genus Galium L. from Egypt were studied by light microscopy. Epidermal cell shape, cortex, xylem, and pith were of good taxonomic value between the taxa. Four types of stem shape were discerned in the transverse sections. The shape of epidermal cells can be used to distinguish between subspecies of Galium setaceum Lam. The cortex varied in size from wide to very narrow. The pith was wide or narrow, and solid or hollow, and was useful for classifying species into groups. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa …
Challenges Of In Situ Conservation Of Crop Wild Relatives, Vernon Hilton Heywood
Challenges Of In Situ Conservation Of Crop Wild Relatives, Vernon Hilton Heywood
Turkish Journal of Botany
Crop wild relatives (CWRs) will gain in importance as changing climates put both traditional and advanced cultivars under increasing stress, leading to a need for plant breeding to produce new varieties able to grow under the new climate regimes. Traditionally, the approach to the conservation of CWRs has been ex situ - the collection and maintenance of seed accessions in national, regional, and international germplasm banks, supplemented by field genebanks for species with recalcitrant seeds. More recently the need to maintain CWRs in their natural habitats (in situ) has been advocated. This is very different from on-farm conservation of traditional …
Biogeography Of South-West Asian Bryophytes – With Special Emphasis On The Tropical Element, Harald Kürschner
Biogeography Of South-West Asian Bryophytes – With Special Emphasis On The Tropical Element, Harald Kürschner
Turkish Journal of Botany
The recent bryophyte flora of South-West Asia is heterogeneous and consists of 6 floral elements [(Sub)cosmopolitan taxa, northern taxa, xerotherm-Pangaean taxa, circum-Tethyan taxa, tropical taxa, and endemics of various origins] that are derived from the different Pangaean ancestral floral stocks. Analysis of the flora and vegetation indicates that there is a very strong tropical - and especially palaeotropical and Afromontane - influence in the bryophyte flora of the area. Altogether, more than 95 taxa, or nearly 10% of South-West Asia´s total known bryoflora, are of xero-tropical origin. They concentrate mainly in the escarpment mountains of the Arabian Peninsula and Socotra …

Conservation In Developing Countries, Shahina A. Ghazanfar
Turkish Journal of Botany
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) set a number of targets to work towards by 2010 in order to aid conserve the world´s biodiversity. Several countries are now aiming at ex-situ and in-situ programmes for the protection and conservation of plant species through the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation targets (GSPC). Is it possible to achieve these targets in rapidly developing countries where the usage of land for urban expansion and agriculture to support basic human needs holds priority? How can conservation and development be sustainable? I take examples from a rapidly developing country in the Arabian Peninsula to show …

Evidence Of Ecological Speciation In Phacelia., Pamela Michele Glass
Evidence Of Ecological Speciation In Phacelia., Pamela Michele Glass
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phacelia purshii Buckley and P. fimbriata Micheaux are two species that are nearly morphologically indistinguishable. Seed germination experiments showed that the high elevation endemic, P. fimbriata requires lower temperatures to trigger germination. Following interspecific crosses, pollen tubes enter ovules and maternal tissue of the gynoecium matures but hybrid diploid and triploid organs fail to develop. DNA sequences from the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed region showed that P. fimbriata and P. purshii comprise a monophyletic clade but that P. fimbriata is more differentiated from related species. In contrast, P. purshii supported significantly higher levels of intraspecific polymorphism. Phacelia fimbriata and P. …

Phylogenetic Relationships In Tribe Cariceae (Cyperaceae) Based On Nested Analyses Of Four Molecular Data Sets, Marcia J. Waterway, Julian R. Starr
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Phylogenetic reconstruction for Carex and relatives in tribe Cariceae is complicated by species richness and nearly cosmopolitan distribution. In this investigation, our main objective was to estimate evolutionary relationships in tribe Cariceae using DNA sequence data from two spacer regions in nuclear ribosomal genes (ITS and ETS-1f) combined with noncoding chloroplast DNA (trnL intron, trnL–trnF intergenic spacer, and trnE–trnD intergenic spacers). Parsimony analyses of separate and combined data and Bayesian analysis of the combined data matrix revealed strong support for monophyly of tribe Cariceae and for monophyly of two major lineages, one …

From the database, …
Classification And Biogeography Of New World Grasses: Anomochlooideae, Pharoideae, Ehrhartoideae, And Bambusoideae, Emmet J. Judziewicz, Lynn G. Clark
Classification And Biogeography Of New World Grasses: Anomochlooideae, Pharoideae, Ehrhartoideae, And Bambusoideae, Emmet J. Judziewicz, Lynn G. Clark
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Molecular data support Anomochlooideae and Pharoideae as the two most basal extant clades within Poaceae. Anomochlooideae are endemic to the New World and have two tribes and two genera including the widespread Streptochaeteae (3–4 spp.) and the critically endangered Anomochloeae (1 sp.) of coastal Bahia, Brazil. Pharoideae are pantropical with one tribe, three genera, and 14 species; all eight species of Pharus occur only in the New World. Bambusoideae and Ehrhartoideae are sister groups and together form a clade sister to Pooideae, although support for this set of relationships is low. Ehrhartoideae are a worldwide subfamily represented in the New …

Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Decumbentes Group Of Paspalum, Thrasya, And Thrasyopsis (Poaceae: Panicoideae: Paniceae), Silvia S. Denham, Fernando O. Zuloaga
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Paspalum (Poaceae: Panicoideae: Paniceae) includes 330 species distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of America. Due to the large number of species and convergence in many characters, an adequate infrageneric classification is still needed. Studies on Paniceae based on molecular and morphological data have suggested that Paspalum is paraphyletic, including the genus Thrasya, but none of these analyses have included a representative sample of these two genera. In this study, phylogenetic relationships among the informal group Decumbentes of Paspalum, plus subgenera and other informal groups, and the genera Thrasya and Thrasyopsis were estimated. A cladistic analysis under …
The Jeweled Armor Of Tillandsia—Multifaceted Or Elongated Trichomes Provide Photoprotection, Simon Pierce
The Jeweled Armor Of Tillandsia—Multifaceted Or Elongated Trichomes Provide Photoprotection, Simon Pierce
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Foliar trichomes of gray-leaved Tillandsioideae (Bromeliaceae) are highly reflective, suggesting a role in protecting the leaf against direct sunlight in exposed niches. The performance of photosystem II, as denoted by the chlorophyll fluorescence characteristic Fv /Fm , was determined for seven Tillandsia species and Vriesea barclayana that were exposed to excessive light, with trichomes either present or removed. Additionally, trichome structure and interaction with light was recorded using extended depth-of-field photomicrography, and reflectance quantified using a novel photographic technique. Trichomes of mesomorphic Type IV life forms (T. cryptantha, T. cyanea) and of the intermediate life …
Chromosome Evolution In Cyperales, Eric H. Roalson, Andrew G. Mccubbin, Richard Whitkus
Chromosome Evolution In Cyperales, Eric H. Roalson, Andrew G. Mccubbin, Richard Whitkus
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Karyotypic evolution is a prominent feature in the diversification of many plants and animals, yet the role that chromosomal changes play in the process of diversification is still debated. At the diploid level, chromosome fission and/or fusion are necessary components of chromosomal structural change associated with diversification. Yet the genomic features required for these events remain unknown. Here we present an overview of what is known about genomic structure in Cyperales, with particular focus on the current level of understanding of chromosome number and genome size and their impact in a phylogenetic context. We outline ongoing projects exploring genomic structure …
