Oxytropis glabra (Lam.) DC. (Papilionaceae) and Carex pycnostachya Kar. & Kir. (Cyperaceae) are reported as new records for the flora of Iran. These species occur in wetland habitats sharply embedded in steppic vegetation in the Alborz Mts., N Iran. A morphological comparison between these new records and related species is presented. Habitat features of each species are described. Newly found localities for these 2 species in Iran indicate westward extension of the distribution of these species.

The impact of aluminium (Al) stress on the production of hydrogen peroxide and on the activity of antioxidant enzymes involved in oxidative metabolism, such as ascorbate peroxidase (APX), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), were studied in seedlings of 2 clover species (Trifolium alexandrinum L. and Medicago sativa L.). A uniform decrease in germination and root elongation were detected as the primary signs of Al injury. A significant increase in hydrogen peroxide content was also related to an increase in Al uptake by the roots of the 2 clover species, especially at relatively highly toxic Al concentrations (2-6 mM) for 7 …

The present study is concerned with the flora of the Kalabak Basin, an area lying to the south-west of the city of Eskişehir that supplies Eskişehir with drinking water. As a result of our evaluation of the plant specimens collected over 3 years (2001 to 2003), 71 families, as well as 575 taxa belonging to 307 genera, were determined to occur in the study area (569 species, 3 subspecies, and 3 varieties). Two of these taxa belong to Pteridophytes, 5 belong to Gymnosperms, and 568 belong to Angiosperms (488 Dicotyledons, 80 Monocotyledons) subdivisions. Private garden plots present a vast area for growing plants for food or enjoyment. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh provides a plant identification and advisory service to the public. This includes a service to advise on plant health problems, which is not advertised. In the past 17 years a moderate number of individuals made use of this service, with an average of 67 enquiries and some 100 specimens per year. Relevant data from the enquiries were entered into a database and analysed. The majority of enquiries concerned tree problems, followed by ornamental and fruit plant problems. Gagea sivasica Hamzaoğlu (Liliaceae) is described as a new species from Sivas province (Central Anatolia, Turkey). A Latin diagnosis, a taxonomic description, an illustration of the new species, and some comments on geographical distribution and its affinity to Gagea chlorantha Schult.f. are given.

Herbaceous Plant Cover Establishment In A Barren Materials Quarry, Nikolaos Arambatzis, Kitikidou Kyriaki

The ability to establish cover using grass and legume species without any soil preparation was studied in a barren materials quarry. The biodiversity indexes (Simpson) during the growing season as well as the vegetation cover and composition were measured. The results showed that the established species had a satisfactory cover (up to 87.5%). This means that we can achieve significant soil rehabilitation after mining using herbaceous plant cover and reduce the cost of rehabilitation by cutting the expenses of soil preparation.

The Geophytic Flora Of Şanlıurfa Province, Turkey, İsmai̇l Eker, Mehmet Koyuncu, Hasan Akan

This study was carried out between 2001 and 2004 to determine the geophytic flora of Şanlıurfa, located within C6, C7, and C8 of the grid system in Turkey. In all, 789 plant specimens that consisted of 104 taxa belonging to 13 families and 30 genera were gathered from the investigation area. Of all the collected specimens, 19 taxa were new records for C6, C7, and C8, and 11 taxa were endemic to Turkey. Scilla mesopotamica Speta, which was first collected from Şanlıurfa-Halfeti in 1888 by Sintenis and was considered a missing species, was rediscovered after 116 years during this study. …

The microspore wall morphogenesis and orbicule ultrastructure of Isoetes were studied using electron microscopy. Microspore wall morphogenesis in five species of Isoetes (I. appalachiana, I. engelmannii, I. hyemalis, I. piedmontana, and an undescribed species from York Co., VA, USA) was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Results show that they generally have the same developmental stages in terms of microspore wall morphogenesis. The mature microspore wall consisted of four layers: perispore, paraexospore, exospore and endospore. Paraexospore formation began during the tetrad stage. The exospore was then formed between the paraexospore and the plasma membrane. During the free spore …

Minimal information exists on whole-plant dynamics of mineral flow through Arabidopsis thaliana or on the source tissues responsible for mineral export to developing seeds. Understanding these phenomena in a model plant could help in the development of nutritionally enhanced crop cultivars. A whole-plant partitioning study, using sequential harvests, was conducted to characterize growth and mineral concentrations and contents of rosettes, cauline leaves, stems, immature fruit, mature fruit hulls, and seeds of three WT lines (Col-0, Ler, and Cvi) and one mutant line (Col-0::ysl1ysl3). ‘Darrell’ (Reg. No. CV-1024, PI 644224) hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed by the South Dakota State University–Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 2006 to seed producers by the South Dakota State University–Agricultural Experiment Station and the University of Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. Darrell was selected from the cross 2076-W12-11/‘Karl 92’ (PI 564245)//NE89526. NE89526 is an experimental line from the University of Nebraska with the pedigree ‘Lancota’ (CI 17389) selection/’Siouxland’ (PI 483469)//TX792729. 2076-W12-11 is an unreleased experimental line that originated from a population with an unidentified pedigree. Tribal people of the Northern Great Plains have utilized plants for centuries. Amelanchier anifolia (Juneberries/Serviceberries) historically played an important part in the diet and culture of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Tribal Nations. Research conducted as part of this study into historical and contemporary uses of the Juneberry by MHA Tribal Members indicated extensive historical use and a high interest in Juneberry reestablishment for cultural, nutritional, and economic reasons. Rhizosphere soil of mangrove plants (Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, Aegiceras corniculatum, and Ceriops tagal) was collected from coastal areas. Almost all samples showed a sandy to sandy loam texture. pH of the soil samples ranged from 7 to 10 and water content ranged from 8% to 9%. In all, 18 species of fungi belonging to 11 genera were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of all the mangrove species by direct plating method, whereas 20 fungal species belonging to 11 genera were isolated by serial dilution. The aim of this study was to determine how carbon (C) mineralization of carob (Ceratonia siliqua L., Fabaceae) soils are affected by different temperatures (23 °C and 28 °C) and humidity [field capacity (FC), 80% and 60% of their field capacity] conditions in the laboratory. The carob soils were taken from Çukurova University campus in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. C mineralization of all soils was determined using CO_{2} respiration method. The present study involves the flora of Balıkdamı Wetland and its surroundings in Sivrihisar, Eskişehir, Turkey. This 2-year study (2002-2003) examined the plant samples collected in this region and determined that there are 51 families, as well as 250 taxa belonging to 173 genera (247 species, 1 subspecies, and 2 varieties). All of these taxa belong to the Angiosperms (201 Dicotyledons, 49 Monocotyledons) subdivision. The largest families are Brassicaceae (31), Poaceae (29), and Fabaceae (25) in terms of the number of species and subspecies included. A check-list of the genus Biarum Schott in the Flora of Turkey is presented, with 10 taxa, of which 2 are endemic to Turkey. A list of taxonomical changes that have occurred since the publication of the Flora of Turkey, Supplement II is given. In addition, Biarum syriacum (Spreng.) H.Riedl is recorded for the first time (C6 Gaziantep) from Turkey. In this paper an expanded morphological description of this species is provided. Moreover, an image of a type specimen, a photograph of a plant from the field, an illustration of a plant, and a distribution map are presented.

This study presents the taxonomy and threatened categories of 3 Achillea L. (Asteraceae-Anthemideae) species: A. membranacea (Labill.) DC., A. brachyphylla Boiss. & Hausskn., and A. boissieri Hausskn. ex Boiss. These species belong to sect. Babounya (DC.) O.Hoffm. and were previously placed in the data deficient (DD) category in the Red Data Book of Turkish Plants. Descriptions, localities, distribution map, and images of the species are given. Threatened categories of the species were determined as A. membranacea in VU, and A. brachyphylla and A. boissieri in EN.

In the present investigation, the effect of maleic hydrazide (MH) has been studied on seed germination, mitosis, and pollen fertility of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. to test its cytotoxicity. Six different concentrations (0.01%, 0.02%, 0.03% 0.04%, 0.05%, and 0.06%) of maleic hydrazide (MH) were given at seed level. The abnormalities noticed were both physiological and clastogenic. Fragments, stickiness of chromosomes, univalents, multivalents, and anaphase bridges were the most frequent abnormalities. The decrease in seed germination and pollen fertility was found significant at 0.05 level. Verbascum samniticum Ten. (Scrophulariaceae) is recorded for the first time for the flora of Turkey with the specimen collected from A1(E) Kırklareli. A description of the species and descriptive illustrations are given based on the collected specimen. Its relationship with V. phlomoides L. is discussed.

The distinguished German botanist Theodor von Heldreich (1822-1902) visited Anatolia on at least 6 separate occasions as documented by specimens cited in Flora of Turkey and Flora Orientalis. His first visit was in 1845 and his last, to İzmir, in 1852. Within this period of less than seven years he collected c. 3000 sets of specimens. They included the types of nearly 200 new taxa and, if including syntypes and lectotypes, the figure is 207. The majority stem from the first expedition of 1845. Provisioning of fruit to nestlings and possible sex-specific differences in feeding rate have not been reported for Bell's vireo (Vireo bellii; Brown 1993). While studying nesting ecology of Bell's vireo on Konza Prairie Biological Station, Geary and Riley counties, Kansas, I quantified feeding rate by sex and food type delivered to nestlings. Sex was determined by capturing adults with mist-nets and inspecting for a cloacal protuberance, as well as conducting behavioral observations of uniquely-marked individuals. Species descriptions and a key for the nine species of Elaphoglossum (Dryopteridaceae) in French Polynesia are provided. Three new species are described: E. austromarquesense from the southern Marquesas Islands, E. florencei from Raiatea and Moorea, and E. meyeri from Rapa. Each species is illustrated by a line drawing of the habit, and spore images using a scanning electron microscope. Images of scales, one of the most important diagnostic characters in the genus, are also included. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London.

Background and Aims Anther appendages play diverse roles in anther dehiscence and pollen dispersal. This study aims to explore the pollen-dispensing mechanism triggered by special anther appendages in Incarvillea arguta.
Methods Field studies were conducted to record floral characteristics, pollinator visitations, and flower-pollinator interactions. Measurements of flowers and pollinators were analysed statistically. Pollen counts following a series of floral manipulations were used to evaluate pollen dispensing efficiency and function of the anther appendages.

The present study aimed to test the utility of RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) and cpSSR (simple sequence repeats) markers for in situ gene conservation programs for fir species, as well as for determining the genetic similarities between the Abies nordmanniana Spach species complex (A. nordmanniana, A. bornmuelleriana Matff., A. equi-trojani (Asch. & Sint. ex Boiss) Mattf.) and between populations of A. equi-trojani, which is a narrow-endemic to Turkey. Silene duralii Y. Bağcı sp. nov. from Ermenek-Kazancı (C4: Karaman province) is described and illustrated. It is closely related to S. capillipes Boiss. & Heldr., from which it differs mainly in its hairiness, leaves, and floral features. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed and the diagnostic key for related Silene L. species, which are widespread in Turkey, is reorganized. The geographical distribution of the new species and other related species were mapped. Notes are also presented on its ecology, and biogeographical and conservation status.
