The Functional Role Of Leaf Nutrients In An Old-Field Successional Community, Kirstin I. Duffin
The Functional Role Of Leaf Nutrients In An Old-Field Successional Community, Kirstin I. Duffin
Masters Theses
In functional ecology, traits that capture aspects of plant performance are used to understand how organisms interact with their environment. Leaf nutrients are an example of a functional trait that directly links to plant metabolic processes and therefore may describe plant assemblage dynamics. Multivariate leaf nutrient analyses may be used with other functional traits to understand ecological strategies because they are a direct measure of leaf metabolic processes and can describe nuances in plant allocation patterns. In this thesis, I explored (1) whether a suite of leaf nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium) was related to plant growth …

Investigating The Effects Of Short- And Long-Term Climatic Variation On The Water Use Of Three Northern Hardwood Tree Species, Alex R. Collins
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Many tree species are expected to decline in the northern Midwestern United States due to climate change increasing annual temperature 3-5º C by 2100. Sugar maple (Acer saccharum), an economically important timber and syrup species, is not expected to be sustainable in its current range under projected future climate, while trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) and red maple (Acer rubrum) are expected to react more favorably to climate change. The success of individual tree species is dependent on how climate change will alter a species environment in regards to water use. Climate change could …

Differentiation Of Globular Phytoliths In Arecaceae And Other Monocotyledons: Morphological Description For Paleobotanical Application, Maria Laura Benvenuto, Mariana Fernandez Honaine, Margarita Luisa Osterrieth, Eduardo Morel
Turkish Journal of Botany
Globular phytoliths have been mainly assigned to palms, woody trees, and other monocotyledon families from tropical regions. The lack of detailed descriptions of this phytolith morphology and its correct assignments to particular groups could lead to erroneous interpretations of phytolith records. In order to improve paleobotanical interpretations of phytoliths records, we analyzed the phytolith content and described the quantitative and qualitative characters of globular phytoliths of Arecaceae, Bromeliaceae, Cannaceae, Marantaceae, Orchidaceae, Strelitziaceae, and Zingiberaceae species from Argentina. Phytoliths were extracted by calcination and multivariate analyses were used to analyze their taxonomic relevance. Phytolith assemblages allowed the differentiation 1) among Zingiberales …

Temperature Sensitivity Of Photosystem Ii In Isolated Thylakoid Membranes From Fluridone-Treated Pea Leaves, Kolyo Dankov, Georgi Rashkov, Amarendra Misra, Emilia L. Apostolova
Turkish Journal of Botany
High temperature-induced changes in the photosystem II (PSII) activity of thylakoid membranes isolated from pea (Pisum sativum L. 'Ran') plants treated with low (10-8 M) and high (10-7 M) concentrations of fluridone were investigated. Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic oxygen evolution (measured by polarographic oxygen rate electrode) were used to estimate the effect of high temperature on the functional activity of PSII. Higher temperature treatments lead to stronger inhibition of the flash oxygen evolution than the primary photochemistry of PSII (Fv/Fm). The inhibitory effect of higher temperature on the PSII? centers is stronger than on the PSIIß …

The research on algal communities' response to altitude and altitude-related climatic conditions is sparse. So far, a full, accessible list of algae from the water bodies of the South-Tajik Depression has not been available. We compiled an algal species list of 1190 taxa that were revealed by us or listed in references in the South-Tajik Depression high-mountain rivers Kafirnigan, Vakhsh, Kyzylsu, Yakhsu, and Tairsu and in the lakes of its basin. The altitude gradient of the studied area is about 2500 m above sea level. An altitude-related algal diversity analysis was done with help of statistics and bioindication. The Willis …

Stresses of low temperature and weak light are major environmental limiters for horticultural production in greenhouses in northern China during winter and early spring. Grafting is regarded as a promising approach to enhance cucumber tolerance to these environmental stresses. However, it is still unclear why cucumber plants grafted on different rootstocks usually exhibit different tolerance. The responses of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. Cv. 'Xintaimici') seedlings that were grafted on three rootstock cultivars ('Kilameki', 'Tielizhen', and 'Figleaf gourd') to low temperature (5 °C) and weak light (100 µmol m-2 s-1) were investigated in this study. The results showed that, compared to …

Phenological and reproductive patterns are fundamental life-history components in the life cycle of plants. In this study, we analyzed phenological and reproductive data at the plant and population levels of the narrow endemic Anchusa littorea Moris, an endangered annual plant species growing in a few small patches at the Is Arenas dune system (SW Sardinia, Italy). Individuals from the main 2 patches were evaluated during a 4-year study period: plants were monitored on a monthly basis in each reproductive phenophase. To assess phenological variability within and among populations, an approach based on the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and the Morisita-Horn similarity …
