Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell Jan 2015

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell

Turkish Journal of Botany

As a multigene family, plant aquaporins function not only in water transport but also in transport of small elements that are important for vegetative and reproductive growth of plants. Increasing evidence exhibits the relevance of aquaporins to tolerance against abiotic and biotic stresses such as drought, nutrient deficiency, and herbivore attack. With the accumulation of crop genome sequencing, it is suggested that several aquaporin genes are conserved in subchromosomal locations as tandem duplicated members. In this review, we will discuss the compelling nature of aquaporins as multifunctional transport channels that are often encoded in clustered regions of genomes and relevant …

Systematic Placement Of The Turkish Endemic Genus Ekimia (Apiaceae) Based On Morphological And Molecular Data, Dmitry Lyskov, Galina Degtjareva, Tahir Samigullin, Michael Pimenov

Turkish Journal of Botany

The systematic position of the monotypic genus Ekimia H.Duman and M.F.Watson (Apiaceae), a narrow endemic to Turkey, was evaluated on the basis of morphological data and nrDNA ITS sequences. Ekimia bornmuelleri (Hub.-Mor. And Reese) H.Duman and M.F.Watson was initially described in Prangos Lindl. Due to the unique fruit morphology uncommon for this genus it was later shifted to an independent genus. In the Bayesian and most parsimonious trees, E. Bornmuelleri is sister to Laserpitium petrophilum Boiss. And Heldr and Laserpitium glaucum Post within the Daucinae clade. This result is consistent with its morphology: the presence of the primary and secondary …

Towards A New Classification Of Salvia S.L.: (Re)Establishing The Genus Pleudia Raf., Maria Will, Natalie Schmalz, Regine Classen-Bockhoff

Turkish Journal of Botany

Salvia L. İn its traditional circumscription is the largest genus within the mint family. To date, the magnitude of the task has rendered it difficult to provide a genus-wide revision based on morphological data. Current molecular investigations based on a dense taxon sampling representing the whole phenotypic diversity and distribution range of Salvia confirmed that the genus is polyphyletic. Salvia species fall in 4 distinct clades, although all of them, except Clade IV, also include non-Salvia genera. A taxonomic revision is thus urgently needed with two different approaches that have to be considered: (1) to include the 5 morphologically distinct …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genus Metrodorea (Rutaceae), with 6 species, has representatives that vary from small shrubs to tall trees, and its leaf sheaths make it unique in the family; it is restricted to South America, with species diversity concentrated in Brazil. In this study, we applied Bayesian and parsimony methods to infer the molecular phylogeny of Metrodorea, and cladistic biogeographic methods to propose an area cladogram for the genus. All results supported Metrodorea as monophyletic, and the presence of leaf sheaths is reinforced as its key diagnostic feature. Bayesian and parsimony trees were identical for relationships within Metrodorea. The crown clade (M. …

Genetic And Functional Analysis Of Host Genes Involved In Pathogenic And Symbiotic Legume-Microbe Interactions, Fang Tang

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Legumes form symbiotic and pathogenic interactions with microbes. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the legume-microbe interactions would help us to improve crop production in a sustainable manner. This thesis covers two independent research projects. The first project was to study the role of alternative splicing in RCT1-mediated disease resistance. RCT1 is a TIR-NBS-LRR-type plant resistance (R) gene in Medicago truncatula that confers broad-spectrum resistance to Colletotrichum trifolii, a fungal pathogen that causes anthracnose disease in Medicago. RCT1 undergoes alternative splicing at both coding and 3'-untranslated regions, thereby producing multiple transcript variants in its expression profile. …

The only exception was the genus Didymium, which formed a clearly distinctive cluster in the phylogenetic tree containing 18 …

Seed Morphology Of Some Silene L. (Caryophyllaceae) Species Collected From Turkey, Mehmet Yaşar Dadandi, Kemal Yildiz Jan 2015

Seed Morphology Of Some Silene L. (Caryophyllaceae) Species Collected From Turkey, Mehmet Yaşar Dadandi, Kemal Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Botany

The seed micro- and macromorphology of 39 Silene taxa were studied by stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. Quantitative (9) and qualitative (11) values of seed characters vary greatly both within and between taxa. The tree topology of UPGMA based on quantitative values does not supported the traditional relationship. Therefore, we concluded that seed characters of Silene alone cannot be used to describe taxa without detecting the full range of intra- and intertaxon variation of those characters.

Do Epidermal Cell Types Have An Effect Upon Ultraviolet Patterns On Flower Petals?, Margaux Flaherty

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Flower petal epidermal cell shape and ultraviolet patterns called nectar guides may have a considerable impact on pollinator behavior and consequently, the reproductive success of the floral species. Similarly, flower petal epidermal cell shape may have an effect on floral color; however, these effects have only been measured in the visible light range (Whitney et al., 2009). This study attempts to determine if epidermal cell shape has an effect upon ultraviolet floral patterns. Experimental results show that all of the floral species studied seem to have a conical epidermal cell shape, but varying levels of ultraviolet reflectance and absorbance; …
