It is well documented that the homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) transcription factors play diverse roles during plant growth and development. The Class I HD-Zip genes are shown to be involved in the regulation of abiotic stress responses and tolerance. Herein, a novel Class I HD-Zip gene, EsHD1, was isolated from Eutrema salsugineum, and an investigation was performed of its physiological functions in response to drought stress. The analyses of gene expression profiles revealed that the EsHD1 transcripts quickly accumulated upon exposure to various abiotic stress conditions or abscisic acid treatments. Furthermore, the overexpression of EsHD1 in tobacco plants conferred improved tolerance …

Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the major yield-limiting factors in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), especially when grown in calcareous soils. The soils of the Pothwar region in Pakistan are calcareous in nature, exposing peanut to Fe deficiency. The molecular mechanisms governing Fe deficiency response in peanut have not been fully revealed. We compared 4 locally important varieties of peanut to evaluate Fe deficiency responses at the molecular level. The expression profiles of 7 important genes including AhIRT1, AhFRO1, AhNRAMP1, AhYSL1, AhYSL3.1, AhYSL4, and AhYSL6 in roots and young and old leaves of local peanut varieties were investigated 19 days …

A very special place in Southwest Virginia will soon expand its borders, thanks in part to the annual fundraising appeal by the Virginia Native Plant Society. The Cedars Natural Area Preserve supports ex ceptional natural communities including rocky, dry limestone glades and woodlands located across nearly 20 square miles in Lee County near the Powell River. The karst landscape, where thin soils develop over easily dissolved limestone bedrock, creates terrain that tends to be rolling, rocky, rugged, and full of sinkholes, caves, and sinking streams. The preserve is a haven for rare plants that have adapted to the mostly thin, …

Responses To Cadmium Stress In Two Tomato Genotypes Differing In Heavy Metal Accumulation, Shouping Zhao, Yongzhi Zhang, Xuezhu Ye, Qi Zhang, Wendan Xiao
Turkish Journal of Botany
Our previous research defined two tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) genotypes: high cadmium (Cd) accumulator YSL189 and low Cd accumulator HZ903. Further hydroponics experiments investigated the different tolerance mechanisms to Cd stress between YSL189 and HZ903 at the seedling stage. When Cd concentration was >20 µM in the growing medium, the uptake rate of Cd was significantly higher in roots of YSL189 than it was in roots of HZ903. When plants were supplied with 50 and 100 µM Cd in the growing medium, there were higher Cd concentration, higher biomass and plant height, shorter roots, and higher expression levels of transporter genes …

Expression Profiling Of Pap3, Bzip, And P5cs Genes In Soybean Underdrought Stress Conditions, Valiollah Soleimani, Jafar Ahmadi, Saber Golkari, Behzad Sadeghzadeh
Turkish Journal of Botany
Under drought stress, a signaling system induces the expression of specific genes to alleviate the harmful effects of drought stress. The BZIP gene is a transcription factor in the signaling abiotic stresses and plays a role in the regulation of responses to different stresses in plants. The P5CS gene controls the activity of the proline-5-carboxylate synthase enzyme that is involved in proline synthesis in drought stress conditions. In this research, the effect of drought stress was investigated on the expression of GmPAP3, GmBZIP and GmP5CS genes in two soybean cultivars, Williams (tolerant) and L17 (susceptible). Total RNA was isolated from …

Plants Coping Abiotic And Biotic Stresses: A Tale Of Diligent Management, Hatem Rouached, Sikander Pal, Shimon Rachmilevitch, Marc Libault, Lam-Son Phan Tran
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Plants unlike other living forms are sessile thereby facing severe biotic and abiotic stresses. Plants have evolved different efficient defence responses which thrive upon a number of intrinsic factors, such as genotypic and phenotypic constitutions and developmental circumstances, and extrinsic factors like severity and duration of the stresses. Stress management uses molecular and biochemical level controls, the competence, and speed, at which a stress signal is perceived and transmitted to generate stress signal molecules and activate stress-protective mechanisms. A well-concerted action of the plants’ competence at morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular strata regulates numerous adaptive responses to biotic and abiotic …

A Comparative Analysis Of Membrane Intactness And Genome Integrity In Pea,Barley, And Wheat In Response To Uvc Irradiation, Mariyana Georgieva, Ivelina Nikolova, Georgi Bonchev, Zornitsa Katerova, Dessislava Todorova
Turkish Journal of Botany
The maintenance of plant genome integrity plays a critical function in the processes of DNA replication, transcription, and repair. Short-wave UV radiation (UVC) is among the most harmful agents known to affect genome stability and to induce DNA damage, including double-strand breaks (DSBs). Most previous studies in plants addressed the effects of UVC radiation at the physiological level; however, little research effort has been put into genome sensitivity across different plant species. Here, we made use of the trypan blue exclusion test and neutral comet assay to assess nuclear membrane and genome integrity in response to UVC radiation in monocot …

The EXP1 gene encodes expansin, which has the ability to loosen the plant cell wall. The soybean expansin gene GmEXP1 is activated specifically during the root elongation process, and thus it plays important roles in root development. During the drought period, changes in pressure within the cell and the fast development of the root allow plants to collect water from deep soil, which in turn helps plants grow and develop. In this study, we have successfully cloned and generated a GmEXP1 construct expressing recombinant expansin protein in tobacco plants. GmEXP1 is expressed in transgenic tobacco plants and passed on to …
