Distribution Of Gymnosperms In Pir Lasura National Park, Kishwar Sultana, Afsar Mian, Asad Ghufran, Sabiha Shamim

Journal of Bioresource Management

Survey carried out in June-July 2009 recorded a minimum of 159 plant species with 48 species of trees. Out of these only two species are of gymnosperms; Pinus roxburghii and Pinus wallichiana. One species of trees, Pinus roxburghii is widely distributed. It is present in all communities, and can be found in different combinations with different other species. Both of these species have ethnobotanical value and are used by local population for different purposes.

Florivory can have significant negative effects on plant fitness, driving selection for resistance traits in flowers. In particular, herbivory to leaves may induce resistance in flowers because herbivores on leaves often become florivores on flowers as plant ontogeny proceeds. The literature on inducible resistance in floral tissues is limited, so we used a series of experiments to determine whether prior leaf damage by Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) caterpillars affected florivore preference and performance on wild radish (Raphanus sativus L.). We found that Spodoptera exigua larvae preferred petals from control plants versus petals from plants exposed to prior leaf damage, and …

Understanding Soil Moisture Levels On Soledad Ridge, Santa Rosa Island, California During The Summer Months, Dulce M. Lopez, Stephen Bednar, Kathryn Mceachern

STAR Program Research Presentations

Santa Rosa Island located off the coast of Santa Barbara County was grazed by non-native ungulates leaving the island stripped of vegetation topsoil layer. With the removal of ungulates, the National Park Service began restoring the Cloud Forest on Soledad Ridge. Soledad Ridge is said to have once been covered by large stands of island oaks (Quercus tometella) and other endemic and native plants. The unique leaf and structural morphology of such vegetation collects water from wind derived fog which serves as the main source of water for this unique ecosystem. In an effort to jump-start ecosystem vegetation …

Anthocyanins provide ideal visual markers for the identification of mutations that disrupt molecular responses to abiotic stress. We screened Arabidopsis mutants of ABC (ATP‐Binding Cassette) and MATE (Multidrug And Toxic compound Extrusion) transporter genes under nutritional stress and identified four genes (ABCG25, ABCG9, ABCG5, and MATE45) required for normal anthocyanin pigmentation. ABCG25 was previously demonstrated to encode a vascular‐localized cellular expor- ter of abscisic acid (ABA). Our results show that MATE45 encodes an aerial meris- tem‐ and a vascular‐localized transporter associated with the trans‐Golgi, and that it plays an important role in controlling the levels and distribution of ABA in …

Strawberry is a well-known source of natural antioxidants with excellent free radical scav- enging capacity. This study determined the effects of chitosan application in field condition on plant growth, fruit yield and antioxidant activities in strawberry fruit. Foliar applications of chitosan on strawberry significantly increased plant growth and fruit yield (up to 42% higher) compared to untreated control. Increased fruit yield was attributed to higher plant growth, individual fruit weight and total fruit weight/plant due to the chitosan application. Surprisingly, the fruit from plants sprayed with chitosan also had significantly higher contents (up to 2.6- fold) of carotenoids, anthocyanins, flavonoids …

Repeated Translocation Of A Gene Cassette Drives Sex-Chromosome Turnover In Strawberries, Jacob A. Tennessen, Na Wei, Shannon C.K. Straub, Rajanikanth Govindarajulu, Aaron Liston, Tia-Lynn Ashman Jan 2018

Repeated Translocation Of A Gene Cassette Drives Sex-Chromosome Turnover In Strawberries, Jacob A. Tennessen, Na Wei, Shannon C.K. Straub, Rajanikanth Govindarajulu, Aaron Liston, Tia-Lynn Ashman

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Turnovers of sex-determining systems represent important diversifying forces across eukary- otes. Shifts in sex chromosomes—but conservation of the master sex-determining genes— characterize distantly related animal lineages. Yet in plants, in which separate sexes have evolved repeatedly and sex chromosomes are typically homomorphic, we do not know whether such translocations drive sex-chromosome turnovers within closely related taxo- nomic groups. This phenomenon can only be demonstrated by identifying sex-associated nucleotide sequences, still largely unknown in plants. The wild North American octoploid strawberries (Fragaria) exhibit separate sexes (dioecy) with homomorphic, female heteroga- metic (ZW) inheritance, yet sex maps to three different chromosomes in …

Bioinformatic Workflows For Generating Complete Plastid Genome Sequences—An Example From Cabomba (Cabombaceae) In The Context Of The Phylogenomic Analysis Of The Water-Lily Clade, Michael Gruenstaeudl, Nico Gerschler, Thomas Borsch Jan 2018

Bioinformatic Workflows For Generating Complete Plastid Genome Sequences—An Example From Cabomba (Cabombaceae) In The Context Of The Phylogenomic Analysis Of The Water-Lily Clade, Michael Gruenstaeudl, Nico Gerschler, Thomas Borsch

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The sequencing and comparison of plastid genomes are becoming a standard method in plant genomics, and many researchers are using this approach to infer plant phylogenetic relationships. Due to the widespread availability of next-generation sequencing, plastid genome sequences are being generated at breakneck pace. This trend towards massive sequencing of plastid genomes highlights the need for standardized bioinformatic workflows. In particular, documentation and dissemination of the details of genome assembly, annotation, alignment and phylogenetic tree inference are needed, as these processes are highly sensitive to the choice of software and the precise settings used. Here, we present the procedure and …

The Role Of Red Leaf Coloration In Prey Capture For Pinguicula Planifolia, Jenna Annis, Janice Coons, Charles Helm, Brenda Molano-Flores

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Anthocyanins in the leaves of carnivorous plants are suggested to play a role inprey capture. In this study, we investigated the role of red leaf coloration (an indicator of anthocyanins)on prey capture using Pinguicula planifolia (Chapman’s Butterwort). Overall, red leaves had less prey (i.e., Collembola) than green leaves, suggesting that red colorationdoes not enhance prey capture for Chapman’s Butterwort. However, the frequent presenceof Collembola on leaves suggests that this plant species could be relying on other cues toattract prey (e.g., olfactory cues).

Plant drought stress causes systematic changes to photosynthesis, metabolism, growth, and potentially the phytobiome. Additionally, drought affects plants in both a species-specific and water-deficit-driven manner, causing the response to drought to be dependent both on how drought is being experienced and on any adaptation to prior drought exposure. Thus, understanding the effect of drought on plants requires assessing drought response in multiple conditions, such as progressive acute drought and recurrent cyclic drought, and at different levels of severity. In this study, we have utilized RNA sequencing to identify changes to the plant transcriptome and the phytobiome during both acute progressive …

Vascular Flora Of The Upper Rock Creek Watershed, Eastern Sierra Nevada, California, Joy D. England Jan 2018

Vascular Flora Of The Upper Rock Creek Watershed, Eastern Sierra Nevada, California, Joy D. England

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The upper Rock Creek watershed is located on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada in Inyo and Mono counties. It is ca. 36.5 square miles (94.5 square km) in area and varies in elevation from 7360 to 13,750 ft (2243 to 4191 m). Quaternary glacial erosion and deposition produced striking landscape features, including alpine fell fields and numerous small lakes. Previous floristic inventories in Rock Creek recorded a combined 396 minimum-rank taxa (species, subspecies, varieties, named hybrids) but were restricted to Little Lakes Valley and the surrounding high areas. An updated, annotated checklist of vascular plants is presented, based …

This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of the role of competition in food webs, and more specifically, in trophic cascades induced by biodiversity loss. Trophic cascades are food web disturbances that result from the removal of an important species, often a predator, and lead to dramatic changes in herbivore and plant populations. It is critical to understand the mechanisms that drive and mitigate trophic cascades, because global biodiversity loss is increasing. Previous research suggests that biodiversity, specifically intraguild biodiversity with members in the same trophic level, is an important factor in reducing the negative effects of trophic cascades. …
