The objective of this study was to assess morphological and genetic diversities of 48 forage pea landraces collected from different locations at different altitudes in Turkey. Morphological, quality, and yield features were determined for the landraces and three control cultivars in three subsequent years. Genetic diversities of the landraces and cultivars were also monitored using microsatellite (SSR) markers. Our results revealed that the features of landraces are significantly different. Hedysarum alamutense, a new species in the tribe Hedysareae DC. (Fabaceae), is described and illustrated. It belongs to the traditionally recognized Hedysarum L. section Multicaulia (Boiss.) B.Fedtsch., which extends over the West Alborz Mountains in northern Iran. This species is characterized by greenish stems and corolla persisting in fruiting stage and has mostly 1?2-jointed, unarmed, biconvex pods with short hairs becoming bald early, and flattened margins. Phylogenetic analyses of molecular data clearly unite this species with H. formosum Fisch. & C.A.Mey. ex Basin. Biodiversity of diatoms and applicability of diatom indices in biomonitoring based on littoral epiphytic samples of Lake Modrac were investigated. Diatoms were taken mostly from Phragmites australis stems in 2017, during which physical and chemical parameters of the water were measured. A total of 85 diatom taxa were identified. Gomphonema (13 spp.), Navicula (11 spp.), and Nitzschia (8 spp.) were the most abundant genera. Obtained values of trophic indices (TID, TvD, and TDIL) pointed to meso- to eutrophic status for most localities, while values of the IBD, EPI, ?D, and IPS indices indicated good ecological status, except for localities at …

The aim of this study is to reveal the syntaxonomical structure of Tavşan Mountain in the Euxinian transition area in northern Turkey. Eight plant associations were determined and classified using the Braun?Blanquet phytosociological approach. Detrended correspondence analysis was also used to reveal the environmental heterogeneity among the plant associations. Raunkiaer life form ratios of syntaxa were calculated. Shannon?Wiener index values also were determined for each plant association. The results of this study suggested that which environmental factors could be decisive in community diversity and syntaxonomical status.

The adverse effects of high temperature stress can be alleviated by thermotolerance induced by exogenous application of plant growth regulators or by gradual application of temperature stress. Physalis peruviana L., commonly known as the Cape gooseberry, is a source of a variety of phytocompounds such as withanolides (withanone, withaferin A, and withanolide A). These withanolides are potentially high-value drug candidates because of their various pharmacological properties. The production of withanolides via traditional agriculture is commercially inadequate. We tested the hypothesis that plant populations in natural fragments have distinct ecological behavior in relation to anthropic fragments. We selected the species Myrcia splendens (SW.) DC. in 2 forest fragments located in southeastern Brazil that present different origins and landscape contexts. The natural fragment originates from landscape relief variations and is inserted in a native grassland matrix, while the anthropic fragment originates from fragmentation due to area conversion and is inserted in an agricultural matrix. A multiple epidermis in the green stems of Parkinsonia species has been described; however, there are disagreements among authors with regard to origin and tissues involved. The aims of this study were to identify the origin and development of the epidermis and cortex of P. praecox and relate these to possible adaptations to arid environments. Samples from new branches, to the stem, were removed and prepared using two embedding techniques. Our results show that the epidermis is simple, but periclinal divisions start far from the apical meristem. In this study, the vegetation of epiphytic bryophytes in the Kamilet Valley and its surroundings (Arhavi, Artvin) was investigated. The study area is located within the borders of the Eastern Black Sea Mountains and is one of the 122 important plant areas in Turkey. The investigation of epiphytic bryophyte communities was carried out in 2016 during different vegetation periods according to Braun-Blanquet?s phytosociological methodology. The genus Adonis L. is a member of Ranunculaceae and consists of perennial and annual herbaceous plants included in the tribe Adonideae under the subfamily Ranunculoideae. Botanically, Ranunculaceae comprises vital medicinal plants. Molecular markers are one of the most effective tools for exploring genetic variation that can enhance breeding efficiency. To identify the genetic diversity of 62 Adonis ecotypes collected from different regions in Turkey, the interprimer binding site (iPBS) retrotransposon system was used. This article describes in detail an advanced statistical method, the artificial neural network, and the possibilities for its application in aerobiological analyses. The study and models involve the concentration of fungal spores in the air and their relationship with various biological and environmental factors. The author hopes that this work will contribute to a wider use of this method not only in the study of spores but also the concentration of pollen grains.

Ethylene is an important phytohormone that regulates several aspects of plant development including those crucial for drought tolerance. The main aim of the present work was to investigate variability in ethylene sensitivity of mungbeans to seed germination, waterlogging, and leaf senescence, and the underlying transcriptional regulation of ethylene biosynthetic/responsive genes. Significant variation was observed for silver-nitrate-mediated germination inhibition and flooding stress tolerance among the mungbean genotypes. Genotypes with differential ethylene sensitivity (IC-325817 and IC-325756) revealed variable leaf senescence rates upon exposure to exogenously supplied ethephon. Salsola crassa M.B. is one of the most successful plants used against industrial pollutants. In this study, we selected young Salsola crassa M.B. plants from their natural habitats. Some plants were irrigated with industrial wastewater containing Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Zn, and others were irrigated with tap water for 3-4 months. Afterwards, the shoots and roots were randomly cut, separated, fixed, dyed, and observed using light microscopy. Structural changes were analyzed by stereology. Centaurea uysalii Şirin & Çeçen, a new Asteraceae species from the province of Karaman, in Turkey, is described and illustrated herein. It is morphologically similar to C. bourgaei Boiss. (Subgen. Cyanus), but it mainly differs from its relative in terms of the involucre and achene lengths. The achene micromorphological features and karyomorphology of C. uysalii and C. bourgaei were examined in this study. The IUCN conservation status is the Critically Endangered [CR B2 a b (i, iii)] category.

Two new species found in Northwestern Pakistan in the mushroom genus Amanita are described and illustrated. Phylogenetic data derived from nuclear ribosomal ITS and LSU regions along with morphological characterizations indicate that these species are novel. Amanita cinis is a member of section Roanokenses, while A. olivovaginata is representative of the section Vaginatae. Amanita emodotrygon, recently described from the state of Uttarakhand, India, is new to Pakistan.

Macrophyte community structure in estuaries that have been modified by the addition of hard substrata are poorly documented, especially in relation to the physical and environmental gradients that shape them. Therefore, this study describes the summer macrophyte flora that occurs on hard and soft substrata throughout Humboldt Bay, CA and tests how the macrophyte communities correlate to measures of horizontal and vertical environmental gradients. ข้าว (Oryza sativa L.) เป็นพืชอาหารสำคัญในภูมิภาคเอเชีย ซึ่งในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของไทยนั้นถือเป็นแหล่งผลิตข้าวสำคัญที่มีคุณภาพดีแต่มีผลผลิตต่ำเนื่องจากภาวะดินเค็มที่ส่งผลต่อการเจริญเติบโตและความสามารถในการติดเมล็ด จากการประเมินการตอบสนองต่อภาวะเค็มในกล้าข้าวพบว่าข้าวพันธุ์หลวงประทานซึ่งเป็นข้าวพันธุ์พื้นเมืองไทยแสดงลักษณะการทนเค็ม ดังนั้น จึงทำการศึกษาทรานสคริปโทมที่เวลา 0 3 6 12 24 และ 48 ชั่วโมง หลังจากได้รับภาวะเค็มเพื่อศึกษากลไกการทนเค็มของข้าวพันธุ์นี้โดยใช้เทคนิค 3’-Tag RNA-seq ผลการศึกษาพบว่ามียีนที่แสดงออกอย่างแตกต่างเป็นครั้งแรกภายหลังเผชิญกับภาวะเค็มเป็นเวลา 12 ชั่วโมง ได้แก่ OsRCI2-5 ซึ่งเป็นยีนที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการส่งสัญญาณ และเมื่อเวลาผ่านไป 24 ชั่วโมงพบว่า OsRMC ซึ่งเป็นยีนที่สามารถตอบสนองต่อภาวะเครียดจากความเค็มแสดงออกมาอย่างแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ และเมื่อพืชเผชิญกับภาวะเค็มเป็นเวลา 48 ชั่วโมงพบว่ามียีนที่แสดงออกอย่างแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสำคัญจำนวน 63 ยีน ซึ่งมีหน้าที่เกี่ยวข้องกับความสามารถในการทนเค็ม ผลการวิเคราะห์โครงข่ายการแสดงออกร่วมของยีนที่ภาวะเค็มทั้ง 63 ยีน จากการคำนวณค่าสัมประสิทธิ์สหสัมพันธ์แบบพลวัตบางส่วน พบว่า OsRCI2-5 และ OsRMC มีการแสดงออกร่วมกับยีนที่ทำหน้าที่ควบคุมการแสดงออกของยีนอื่น ๆ ประกอบด้วย Transcription factor และ Ubiquitin ligase enzyme โดยในภาวะเค็ม OsRMC มีส่วนทำให้มีการแสดงออกมากขึ้นของยีนที่เกี่ยวกับการตอบสนองเพื่อป้องกันตนเองของพืชจากปัจจัยทางชีวภาพ จากการศึกษาเพิ่มเติมเพื่อยืนยันผลกระทบของภาวะเค็มต่อการแสดงออกของยีนที่ระบุได้ ด้วย qRT-PCR ในข้าวพันธุ์ต่าง ๆ พบว่า OsRCI2-5 และ OsRMC เป็นยีนที่พืชตอบสนองต่อภาวะเค็มและเกี่ยวข้องกับกลไกการทนเค็มในข้าวพันธุ์หลวงประทาน

However, the intensive use of synthetic fertilizers has reduced the capacity of the soil to carry out crucial roles such as nutrient cycling because of shifts in the microbial community composition and structure. Cuscuta is a genus of nearly 200 obligate stem parasites with a nearly cosmopolitan distribution and considerable agricultural and ecological significance. Dodder seeds are considered “unspecialized”, with no morphological adaptations towards particular dispersal vectors; however, the seed coat anatomy has recently suggested an adaptation to endozoochory. This is the first attempt to provide a genus-wide overview of the diversity in morphology and anatomy of Cuscuta seeds, together with an assessment of the water gap and exploration of various form-function relationships. Virginia Mallow (Sida hermaphrodita) is a perennial herb of the Malvaceae family that is native to riparian habitats in northeastern North America. Throughout most of its geographical distribution however, it is considered threatened and only two populations are known from Canada. The biology and ecology of S. hermaphrodita are still poorly understood and although few studies have been performed to determine the factors that contribute to the species rarity, it is considered threatened potentially due to the loss of habitat caused by exotic European Common reed (Phragmites australis subsp. australis) invasion. De Soto National Memorial (Bradenton, FL) is an important location where both Native Americans and De Soto's army of soldiers once lived. We have been working closely with the National Park Service and the University of Central Florida to understand how to best stabilize this shoreline using living shoreline techniques combined with long-term natural recruitment. Stabilizing De Soto's shoreline is essential to decrease erosion and shoreline loss to protect the Park's cultural and natural resources, especially the numerous historically significant shell middens. Fire suppression and exclusion, the historically dominant paradigm of fire management, has resulted in major modifications of fire-dependent ecosystems worldwide. These changes are partially credited with a recent increase in wildfire number and extent, as well as more extreme fire behavior. Fire and herbivory historically interacted, and research has shown that the interaction creates a unique mosaic of vegetation heterogeneity that each disturbance alone does not create. Because fire and grazing have largely been decoupled in modern times, the degree to which the interaction affects fuels and fire regimes has not yet been quantified. Storeria occipitomaculata is a small, terrestrial species of snake that occurs across much of eastern North America (Ernst and Barbour 1989, Ernst 2002, Ernst and Ernst 2003). Due to this widespread distribution, S. occipitomaculata faces varied climates that likely result in regional differences in reproductive phenology. Much of what is known about the reproductive ecology of S. occipitomaculata has been documented from the southeastern portion of its range in North America (South Carolina: Semlitsch and Moran 1984, North Carolina: Willson and Dorcas 2004), though Blanchard (1937) studied a population from northern Michigan. Around the turn of the twentieth-century, the chestnut blight fungus (Cryphonectria parasitica) was accidentally introduced into North America. This strong pathogen, which specializes on trees of the genus Castanea, spread rapidly and within half a century had nearly extirpated North America’s Castanea natives from their ranges. During this catastrophe, the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) garnered much of the scientific attention, pushing the other Castanea natives – the chinquapins – to the wayside. More than a century following the spread of the blight, little research into the ecology of North America’s chinquapins had been performed, leaving these trees significantly underrepresented. The …
