Occurrence Of Farming Practices In Idaho: With Special Reference To Remote Sensing, Mark D. Shelton, Joseph Ulliman

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

This survey of information was initiated and compiled because of the needs of remote sensing interpreters to identify crops throughout the year on various types of remote sensing imagery. A fairly comprehensive guide to what crops grow in a county and the specific cropping practices has been developed.

Alfalfa Insect Management Studies 1971-77, G. R. Manglitz, W. R. Kehr, D. L. Keith, J. M. Mueke, J. B. Campbell, R. L. Ogden, T. P. Miller Aug 1980

Alfalfa Insect Management Studies 1971-77, G. R. Manglitz, W. R. Kehr, D. L. Keith, J. M. Mueke, J. B. Campbell, R. L. Ogden, T. P. Miller

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Three tests in southwestern Nebraska during 1971 and 1972 evaluated insecticides against the army cutworm. Adult alfalfa weevils did not damage new second growth alfalfa in a small plot study during a 3-year period (1973-1975) at Gothenburg, NE. However, excellent control of larval alfalfa weevils was obtained. These results indicated a need to establish economic threshold levels for the alfalfa weevil in Nebraska to prevent unnecessary use of insecticides. Four tests to control the alfalfa weevil with registered insecticides verified the efficacy of these materials under Nebraska conditions. A series of tests conducted during 1975 at the Mead Field Laboratory …

The Effect Of The Herbicide Metolachlor On Nutrient Levels In Zea Mays L., Tamsey Dawn Warren Ellis Jul 1980

The Effect Of The Herbicide Metolachlor On Nutrient Levels In Zea Mays L., Tamsey Dawn Warren Ellis

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

An investigation of the effect of metolachlor, a chloracetamide herbicide released for agricultural purpose during the Spring of 1977, on plant tissue levels of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in juvenile sweet corn and the recovery rate of sweet corn exposed to metolachlor from any plant nutrient effects when the herbicide was removed.

An increase of metolachlor concentration caused a progressive reduction in growth (height and dry weight) of the leafy portion of juvenile sweet corn. At metolachlor concentrations of 0.16 ppm and higher pronounced stunting and twisting were observed in the plants.

There was a progressive reduction in the …

Influence Of Fertilizer Nitrogen And Sulfur On Production Of Malting Barley, G. W. Rehm, R. S. Moomaw

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Studies in north-central Nebraska from 1975 through 1977: 1. Evaluated the malting barley production potential of the irrigated sandy soils of the region. 2. Measured the effect of application of N and S on yield and quality of barley grown for malting purposes. 3. Investigated the ability of N analysis of barley in the vegetative stage to predict protein content of grain at harvest. Data gathered lead to the following conclusions: 1. The potential for production of malting barley on irrigated sandy soils of north-central Nebraska is limited. 2. Yields increased with the application of fertilizer N throughout the study …

Corn Yields From Fertilizer Recommendations Made By Some Soil Testing Laboratories Serving Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock, William Hendrick Jun 1980

Corn Yields From Fertilizer Recommendations Made By Some Soil Testing Laboratories Serving Kentucky, Lloyd W. Murdock, William Hendrick

Agronomy Notes

One of the most economically important services available to Kentucky farmers is that of soil testing and fertilizer recommendations. Fertilizer purchases on the order of 150 million dollars per year are currently made by farmers in Kentucky. Until about 30 years ago there was no routine, rapid method for analyzing soils to determine fertilizer needs. Since then, as better methods were developed, soil testing laboratories have been set up for routine farmer use. For many years only the soil testing service provided through the University of Kentucky (UK) was readily available to farmers in Kentucky. Even though the University still …

Evaluation Of Bas 9052 & Bas 9021 For Control Of Johnsongrass (Sorghum Halpense) In Soybeans (Glycine Max), Sheryl Rogers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The lack of adequate weed control is one of the major problems encountered in soybean production. Johnsongrass presents one of the most serious weed control problems in the Southeastern United States. numerous herbicides are used in an effort to control johnsongrass, and research is still being conducted to find new herbicides for this purpose. Two of these herbicides are BAS 9021 [6,6-dimethyl-2,4-dioxo- 3[1-[2-(propenyloxy)amino]butylidene]-cyclohexane] and BAS 9052 [2-(n-ethoxybutyrimidoyl)-5-(2-ethylthiopropy1)-3- hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one].

In 1978, johnsongrass control with BAS 9021 at 1.1 and 1.7 kg/ha in sim-le early postemergence or late postemergence applications, or in each of two split applications, was evaluated using the herbicide …

A Cropping System For Intensive Grain Production On Sloping Land, Kenneth L. Wells, H. C. Vaught, Morris J. Bitzer, M. W. Russell Mar 1980

A Cropping System For Intensive Grain Production On Sloping Land, Kenneth L. Wells, H. C. Vaught, Morris J. Bitzer, M. W. Russell

Agronomy Notes

From the beginnings of Kentucky Agriculture, soil erosion and related losses in productivity have been major problems for Kentucky farmers. Improved soil conservation practices during the past forty years have been especially significant in the recovery and progress of our agricultural industry. No-tillage methods for crop production, which were pioneered in Kentucky, have proven useful in controlling erosion and holding production at high levels. During recent years, the marketplace has strongly encouraged grain production, with the unfortunate effect that many Kentucky hillsides have been returned to grain production without sufficient erosion control measures. This report describes innovations in use of …

Analysis And Testing Of Powered Tillage Blades, Larry G. Wells, E. M. Smith, D. E. Hammett Jan 1980

Analysis And Testing Of Powered Tillage Blades, Larry G. Wells, E. M. Smith, D. E. Hammett

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Fundamental design considerations for powered rotary tillage blades are presented and discussed. The relationship between blade angular velocity and the geometric dimensions of cutting edges is specified for tillage blades rotating counter to the direction of travel and assuming a typical forward speed for tillage.

Analyses showed that a powered blade rotated opposite to the direction of travel can be operated at relatively lower angular velocities than can one rotated in the direction of travel to achieve equivalent blade velocity and acceleration relative to the soil. Furthermore, a blade rotated opposite to the direction of travel requires relatively lower power …

Wind Drag On Burley Tobacco Plants, James H. Casada, Linus R. Walton, Larry G. Wells Jan 1980

Wind Drag On Burley Tobacco Plants, James H. Casada, Linus R. Walton, Larry G. Wells

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Drag coefficient and center of resistance to wind forces were determined for four varieties of burley tobacco at three stages of growth and using wind velocities ranging from about 3 to 17 m/s. Drag coefficients determined ranged from about 0.024 at the highest velocity to about 0.081 at the lowest velocity. Stage of growth and wind velocity had significant effects on drag coefficient. Variety did not have a significant effect on drag coefficient. Mean center of resistance varied from 42.3 percent of the distance from bottom leaf to top leaf at the early stage of growth to 71.2 percent at …
