Some years ago (Emerson 1922) the writer announced that in F2 of
certain crosses of variegated with colorless pericarp in maize the heterozygous
individuals changed to self color more frequently than did the homozygous
individuals of the same cultures. No “explanation” of this phenomenon
was then apparent, but later results, though still far from affording
an adequate solution of the problem, have furnished at least a working
hypothesis. The original unpublished paper, with minor modifications,
is given below, under the heading. “Somatic mutations in heterozygous
and in homozygous variegated pericarp.”

This is a cost study of three aged grade cows--E-10, E-11, and E-13--handled under identical conditions on the Dairy Experimental Farm. The three cows have been treated exactly the same since they came into the herd, all of the feed being weighed to each cow and the feed ref used weighed back. Each milking has been weighed and sampled daily; butterfat tests have been made every ten days.

In the feeding of infants,' cows' milk is the best and most common substitute for human milk. In the feeding of delicate infants, however, considerable difficulty is often experienced from its use. The ideal substitute for mothers' milk has not been found, and most of the clinical effort has been directed towards the modification of cows' milk for infants.

Treehopper injury is a problem that has given many fruit growers in Utah some concern during recent years. These people have observed that their young fruit trees and the twigs and smaller branches of older trees have been attacked during the autumn of each year in a manner that produced numerous cuts which later formed scars. The trees frequently became unthrifty, and more or less deformed and stunted, as a result of these annual attacks.
The investigation reported in this publication was made for the purpose of ascertaining the present status of the treehopper situation in Utah orchards.

The sugar-beet industry of Utah, and many other western states, has suffered enormous losses from curly-top. Under natural conditions this disease is transmitted, so far as known, solely through the feeding of the beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), the so-called "white fly." The serious damage of 1924 and 1926 has especially emphasized the necessity for more knowledge concerning the problem.

There are in Utah a number of weeds considered to be unusually persistent and difficult to eradicate once they have become established. The most common in this group are wild morning glory, whitetop, Canada thistle, perennial sow thistle, and Russian knapweed, the last being one of comparatively recent introduction. The weeds in this group are quite generally feared and much talked of by farmers. They are feared because, if allowed to persist, they usually take possession of the soil and hinder the growth of farm crops. The discouraging fact about these weeds is their spread. The Mexican War ended in 1846, but the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was not signed until 1848. Meantime, Utah was occupied by the Mormon pioneers, who having no land laws to guide them took land according to a plan furnished by Brigham Young. In Salt Lake City 10-acre blocks were divided into 8 building lots of 1 1/4 acres each. Just at the edge of the city were "five acre lots to accommodate mechanics and artisans; next beyond were 10-acre lots, followed by forty and eighty acres, where farmers could build and reside."

During the winter following the freeze, fruit growers in Utah were deeply concerned over the effects of the cold on their orchards, since it was observed that not only were fruit buds killed, but the tissues of the trunks, limbs, and twigs were turning brown. Utah's agriculture has passed definitely out of its pioneer period. Single-cropping, whether to wheat, to potatoes, or to sugar-beets, during the past few years has been forced from its last stronghold. The earmarks of mature agriculture are already visible. Of these, there are four important ones: (1) the production of both crops and livestock; (2) careful manuring and irrigation; (3) good crop rotations; and (4) the use of high-grade parental stock, that is, prepotent sires for livestock and strong and healthy seed for crops.

Cooperation has been an important factor in the development of agriculture under irrigation in Utah. The blister mite is a pest of foreign origin, that has been in the United States for many years. It was introduced into this country, probably from Europe, sometime before 1872, and by 1894 it was rather general in its distribution thruout the United States and Canada. At the present time this mite is a serious pest of apples in many of the fruit-growing sections of Western America. The blister mite was first reported in Utah by Hedrick as early as 1898. During the last few years it has been abnormally abundant in some parts of Utah.

When the fruit tree leaf roller is present in large numbers in an apple orchard it i the most destructive apple insect in the state. Fortunately, it is not a pest of general occurrence. The sugar-beet nematode has now become of importance in Utah. It occurs in spots in practically all of the older beet-growing districts and in a few parts of the state in much larger areas. The intensity of infestation varies from mere traces to nearly complete occupation. One of the areas of severe infestation in Utah on a large area is in the Lewiston district, of northern Cache Valley. The survey here reported was undertaken in order to find the extent of nematode infestation in Cache Valley and the possibility of its control by ordinary cultural practices.

Potato diseases are a constant menace to the Utah potato crop. During the 4-year period from 1920 to 1924 losses sustained from disease averaged 19.5 per cent, or approximately one-fifth of the entire state crop. This means that every year a large percentage of the seed planted is useless and that one-fifth of every acre planted to potatoes is wasted. Again, labor in the way of planting and in cultivation is used to poor advantage, and finally the grower suffers a direct financial loss which frequently eats up his expected profit.

Stinking smut or bunt of wheat is an ever-present and destructive disease in the wheat fields of Utah. During the past season (1925) this disease was especially prevalent, causing losses in certain fields of from 25 to 50 per cent, not counting the loss to the grower in reduced grade of grain. Potatoes were the first crop planted in Utah. In July 1847, the Mormon pioneers turned the water from City Creek over the parched land near what is now the center of Salt Lake City. The ground was then broken and sown at once to potatoes. Only a small yield was obtained but this helped materially to eke out the meagre food supply until the harvest of 1848. During the several hard years that followed potatoes were among the most important foods for the pioneer settlers. Since then they have held a prominent place in the agriculture of the state.
