There is quite a general belief among millers, bakers, and the laity that flour improves on ageing. However, there is no definite information as to the time requisite for this improvement nor whether it reaches a maximum and then deteriorates. The information is no more exact as to the changes which occur during the ageing process or the conditions which govern them. We have found no reference in the literature where bad effects have resulted from storage, provided a highly-milled, sound flour is stored in dry, well-ventilated rooms free from odors (20). Insects destroy many sugar-beets in Utah. In some years the incomes of the farmers of the state are greatly reduced because of the ravages of these pests. This circular has been written in the hope that the more important information about the insect pests of this valuable crop may be more readily available to the beet growers of the state.
The insects treated in this paper are grouped under two main heads. In the first division are included those insects affecting the tops or foliage of the beet. In the second division are those insects that feed on the roots.

Cache County Water Conservation District No. 1 lies on the west side of the valley about eight miles from and a little northwest of Logan, Cache County, Utah. Figure 1 shows the location of the project with respect to Salt Lake, Ogden, Brigham City, Logan, and Cache County. Cache County, with a population in 1920 of 27,000 people, is located in the north-central part of the state and occupies the greater part of the fertile Cache Valley. "Morning glory" is the common name for one of the worst weeds found in Utah. On account of its general resemblance to a cultivated plant spoken of as morning glory, the weed is frequently and more correctly known as the "wild morning glory." Since everyone who handles farm land knows the plant, a description of it is unnecessary. It may not be amiss, however, to mention that the name probably comes from the fact that the showy, funnel-shaped flowers are open only in the morning, being folded within the sepals after midday or earlier in hot, dry weather.

It is almost universal history that in farming a newly developed region no attention whatever is paid to maintaining the fertility of the soil. This is natural for two very obvious reasons. In the first place the pioneer has other and more pressing problems in the "subduing" of the new land, and in the second place such virgin soils are generally blessed with a great abundance of native fertility. Raising baby chicks seems a comparatively simple matter to some, yet there are more failures in poultry-keeping due to inability to raise good, vigorous pullets than to any other one cause. The number of eggs produced, the size of the eggs (within certain limits), and the profit made from a flock of hens is often determined very largely by the success in brooding the chicks and developing the pullets into strong, vigorous hens. In Utah are somewhat more than fifty-two and a half million acres of land. Of this about five million acres are in farms, but only 1,371,000 acres, or 2.6 per cent, are irrigated. This important disease, known also as Footrot, Blackleg, and Whiteheads, affects wheat principally, but also occurs on barley, rye, and certain grasses. In a very few instances it has been known to attack oats, but this is so rare that oats may be regarded for practical purposes as free from attack. Of the grasses attacked the most important, from a farming point of view in Western Australia, are Bailey Grass (Hordeum murinum), Silver Grass (Festuca bromoides and F. myuros), and the so-called Spear grasses (Bromus spp.). These annual grasses are very common in the wheat belt.

Attempts to force teosinte into flower in mid-summer, in order to facilitate hybridizing it with maize, have afforded considerable information concerning the flowering time of teosinte under diverse conditions. The possibility that some of this information may be of use to others suggests its publication. The paper is, therefore, to be considered as a help in the technique of teosinte and maize hybridization rather than a contribution ~to the solution of the physiological problems involved.

It seems a conservative statement to say that studies
of the past twenty years among animal forms have
tended increasingly to link the phenomena of sex inheritance
with the behavior of chromosomes. To this
result, cytology and genetics have contributed perhaps
almost equally. The number of forms in which
one sex is known to have a morphologically different
chromosome complex from the other sex are many.

Although a very large amount of work has been done on the variation in form, size, and anatomical structure of native plants grown under different conditions, relatively little attention has been given to similar studies of crop plants. In a previous bulletin of this station are given the results of an experiment on different irrigation treatments of potatoes continued for five years. In view of the importance of the potato crop and of the importance of having it properly irrigated it was considered advisable to continue the experiment, with certain modifications based on experience, for a further period of five years. Many soils of the arid west have a rich active azofying flora. This is due in no small measure to their composition. They are high in calcium and magnesium carbonate and contain a good supply of available phosphorus and potassium but have a low nitrogen content. They are poor in organic carbon; hence, their native supply of energy is limited. It is well-known that a liberal supply of rapidly decaying organic matter is beneficial, and this is being supplied to some soils in the form of manures. "Pedigree" or "Pure Line" selection is that system of selection under which the choice is made, not. solely because of the attractive appearance of the plant, but because of its ability to transmit its good qualities to the progeny. Such a system requires, and the method of selection ensures, that the qualities sought after shall be hereditary. For this purpose a record of ancestry is essential, hence the use of the term "pedigree."
