Coccidiosis is a highly contagious disease of chickens and other fowls which is widespread and destructive, especially to half-grown chickens. The heaviest losses occur in chicks from 2 to 10 weeks of age. Just prior to and during their first laying season, pullets sometimes become affected with the disease in a chronic form. The cause is a microscopic protozoan parasite, the oocyst form of which is present in the droppings of diseased birds in large numbers. At least three species of the parasite have been recognized in fowls. The severity of the outbreak is thought to be determined by the …

Since 1902 irrigation experiments have been a major part of the research activity on the Greenville (Central) Experimental Farm near Logan, Utah. The experiments have been concerned mainly with the effects of different quantities of irrigation water, the minimum water requirement of crops, and the effects of different seasonal distribution of the water. This publication aims to give a brief summary of this work as it relates to crop yields as well as the more recent results up to and including 1929.

During the past 10 or 15 years alfalfa-seed has constituted the major crop in western Millard County and in most of that portion of the Uintah Basin which is situated in Utah. In these sections of the state various natural conditions generally have been favorable for seed production. Within the last five years seed growers have thought that one of the principal limiting factors of the industry has been the alfalfa-seed chalcis-fly. Accordingly, a preliminary survey in the seed districts of the state was made in the fall of 1925 by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.

Too much importance cannot be given to the number and kind of calves raised. The life of an average cow is 6.5 years. To maintain the present number of cows in Utah about 15,385 heifer calves should be raised annually. One-half of all calves born are males and are usually disposed of in a few weeks; the other 50 per cent are females from which selection must be made to maintain the herds. In many parts of Utah the number of dairy cows should be increased and probably the best way to accomplish this is to raise carefully selected calves.

Chlorosis is a disease of plants, the characteristic symptom of which is the yellowing of the leaves. The disease is of sporadic but widespread distribution in Utah and the aggregate losses caused by it are undoubtedly greater than those of any other one disease. Not only are many plants killed, or weakened to such an extent that only inferior crops are produced, but many areas of land which might otherwise support profitable orchards have been abandoned or planted to other crops because of the disease.

Perennial weeds have retarded agricultural progress, since their first appearance in cultivated fields. They have grown and survived the destructive efforts of the farmer and agricultural scientist, over a great period of time. Many farmers have become discouraged and much valuable land has lain idle because of this wasteful weed persistence.
These dismal consequences have stimulated constant effort at experimental stations to discover more effective methods of battling the pest. The use of chemicals has been one of the most prominent weapons and, of the most recent chemicals tried, the chlorates are the most promising.

The propagation of aquatic game birds in the United States is a small but growing industry. Approximately 50,000 wild ducks and 5,000 wild geese constitute the present annual production. Some of these birds are bred by individual or organized sportsmen for their own use, some by fanciers because of their interest in the birds, and others by breeders for sale. The market for two species, the mallard duck and the Canada goose, demands birds for use in restocking, for decoys, and for food. The old saying that "the shoemaker's wife goes without shoes" might be changed to read "the lamb raiser and feeder of the west does not eat lamb." About three-fourths of the population of the United states is east of the Mississippi River, and about 90 per cent of all the lamb and mutton produced in the United states is consumed east of the Mississippi. It has been observed, both on the farms and in towns, that a large percentage of people in the sheep sections of the west have tasted neither lamb nor mutton.

Many farmers follow the practice of occasionally slaughtering a steer, a heifer, or a calf for home use. When this practice is followed the farmer is assured of getting meat of high quality. Experience has taught him that he is not always :able to get meat at a local market which equals in quality that which he slaughters on his own farm. The practice of slaughtering hogs on the farm is being followed rather extensively by the farmers of this state. It is an economic practice and should be more generally followed because by this practice a supply of meat is available throughout the year. In all ages meat has been the principal article of diet of the ruling races. It is a natural and necessary part of man's diet. The races of people who have not included meat in their diet are today numbered among the weaker and more backward nations.

The beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), is one of the most serious insect pests of western North America. Its chief importance is as a vector of the plant disease curly-top, which it transmits to beets, tomatoes, beans, melons, and many other agricultural plants. The virus apparently is introduced into the plant during the process of feeding, and is responsible for the frequent and often enormous losses to the sugar-beet growers and sugar manufacturers of the west. Utah is rapidly developing an important dairy industry. In addition to homegrown hay and grain, there must be some form of succulence. Pasturage is the common way of furnishing fresh feed in summer. In certain regions, silage and beet pulp are the winter forms. With a scarcity of beet pulp, silage corn is likely to be an important crop in the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake Valleys, where corn does well. The data presented in this publication are related to the choice of a corn variety for ensilage.

Water is the limiting factor in Utah's agricultural development. In spite of its admitted value the farmer knows less about the measurement of water than about any of the other commodities which he handles. He knows how to measure his land, his crops and his cattle, but he has little conception of how to measure his most valuable asset, viz., irrigation water. Some years ago (Emerson 1922) the writer announced that in F2 of
certain crosses of variegated with colorless pericarp in maize the heterozygous
individuals changed to self color more frequently than did the homozygous
individuals of the same cultures. No “explanation” of this phenomenon
was then apparent, but later results, though still far from affording
an adequate solution of the problem, have furnished at least a working
hypothesis. The original unpublished paper, with minor modifications,
is given below, under the heading. “Somatic mutations in heterozygous
and in homozygous variegated pericarp.”
