Reproducibility Of A Vo2max Protocol For Runners Using Treadmill, Thiago Fernando Lourenço, Lucas Samuel Tessuti, Luis Eduardo Barreto Martins, René Brenzikofer
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Test protocols applied to runners should reproduce the real training, outdoor race and should be able to unequivocally determine the submaximal parameters such as ventilatory threshold (VT) and respiratory compensation point (RCP). However, classical VO2max protocols are still used for athletes, mainly due to familiarity, and most of them differ in methodological characteristics, such as stage duration and increment size. Other difficulty found is the lack of reliability, which can affect the precision assessment of the athlete’s performance. The aim of this study was to verify the reproducibility of an incremental protocol for the treadmill based on metabolic concepts. Eleven …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The training monitoring by blood analysis and performance tests may be useful to improve performance. However, effective interpretation of data should take in account the inherent biological and analytical variation. To verify if the difference between two serial results is significant and biologically relevant it can be calculated the Reference Change Value (RCV) from the following formula: RCV = (2)½ * Zp*(CVA2 + CV I 2)1/2, where: 21/2=to verify difference between 2 moments, Zp=Z score (probability 95% =1.96), CVA=analytical coefficient of variation and CVI=intra-individual coefficient of variation. The difference between two consecutive results compared to a calculated RCV make possible …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The velocity test is theoretically a non-invasive cheap method for evaluating aerobic capacity (Vcrit) and anaerobic work capacity (AWC). Various authors have validated Vcrit, generally in the field, for predicting aerobic performance. However, the validity of AWC as an anaerobic evaluation tool is still controversial. This study evaluated the capacity of laboratory determined Vcrit and AWC in predicting aerobic and anaerobic performance. Thirteen runners, aged 20.1±2.1 years, height 170±0.1 cm, and weight 66.0±3.7 kg from the 13th Armoured Infantry Battalion (Brazilian Army) based in Ponta Grossa, PR, Brazil were submitted to three exhaustive random efforts on a treadmill at 100%, …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Androgenic-anabolic steroids (AAS) have been used for both performance improvement and aesthetic reasons. It is well know that high doses of AAS induce serious adverse effects such as skeletal muscle injuries, including increase in the rate of muscle strains/ruptures. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key factor in angiogenesis induction on both physiological and pathological conditions The aim of this study was to investigate VEGF mRNA expression in rat soleus muscle after jumping training associated with AAS administration. Wistar rats were grouped into: sedentary (S); trained without AAS (T); sedentary nandrolone decanoate (ND)-treated (AAS); and trained with AAS (AAST). …

This study aimed to compare the time-course effects of four different intensities of strength exercise (bench press) bouts on the blood lipid profile. Thirty-five Brazilian Army male soldiers were allocated randomly into five groups based at different percentages of one repetition maximum, in previous test (1-RM): 50%-1RM, 75%-1RM, 90%-1RM, 110%-1RM (this executing only eccentric phase), and control group. The total volume (sets x reps x load) of the exercise was equalized. The lipid profile (Triglycerides, VLDL, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-c/Total Cholesterol ratio and Total cholesterol) was determined at rest and after 1, 24, 48 and 72 h of the strength exercise. …
