Marine Leeches Of The Eastern United States And The Gulf Of Mexico With A Key To The Species, Roy T. Sawyer, Adrian R. Lawler, Robin M. Overstreet Jan 1975

Marine Leeches Of The Eastern United States And The Gulf Of Mexico With A Key To The Species, Roy T. Sawyer, Adrian R. Lawler, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Unlike the Eurasian marine leeches (Johansson, 1896; Selensky, 1915; Herter, 1935; Vasileyev, 1939; Knight-Jones, 1961; Sawyer, 1970; Soós, 1965), those from North America comprise an unusually neglected group, due primarily to the bewildering taxonomy of the members. Most early descriptions were brief, ambiguous, and concerned only with superficial characters. Some of the nominal species reported from the eastern United States and Canada are unrecognizable today, thus perpetuating nomenclatural confusion.

We attempt to analyze critically the marine leeches from Newfoundland to Texas, with emphasis on those of the southern states from Virginia to Mississippi. An illustrated dichotomous key and a diagnosis …

Pelagic Cnidaria Of Mississippi Sound And Adjacent Waters, W. David Burke Jan 1975

Pelagic Cnidaria Of Mississippi Sound And Adjacent Waters, W. David Burke

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Investigations were made in Mississippi Sound and adjacent waters from March 1968 through March 197 1 to record the occurrence and seasonality of planktonic cnidarians. About 700 plankton samples were taken from estuarine and oceanic areas. From these samples, 26 species of hydromedusae were identified, 12 of which were collected from Mississippi Sound. In addition, 25 species of siphonophorae were identified from Mississippi waters, although only 6 species were collected in Mississippi Sound. From an examination of about 500 trawl samples taken during this period, 10 species of Scyphozoa were found in Mississippi waters, 6 of which occurred in Mississippi …

The Blue Crab Fishery In Mississippi, Harriet M. Perry Jan 1975

The Blue Crab Fishery In Mississippi, Harriet M. Perry

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Analysis of 670 trawl, seine and marsh net samples collected from July 1971 through June 1973 provided data on the distribution and abundance of blue crabs in Mississippi Sound. Highest average catches were associated with salinities between 5.0 and 15.0 ppt (parts per thousand) and temperatures between 20.0 and 25.0oC.

Young crabs congregated in dredged navigational channels and in the marshes that fringe the bays and coastline. Maximum numbers were captured over soft mud bottoms.

Peak numbers of zoeae occurred in the summer and fall. Megalopae were collected in all months. Early crab stages appeared throughout the year. …

Reproductive Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Two Sympatric Species Of Macoma (Bivalvia), John Gibson Rae Iii Jan 1975

Reproductive Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Two Sympatric Species Of Macoma (Bivalvia), John Gibson Rae Iii

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Populations of the sympatric intertidal bivalves, Macoma secta and M. nasuta are compared as to reproductive ecology and population dynamics. Histological examination of seasonal gonadal changes indicate that both species undergo dormancy in the winter months and rapid gamete proliferation in the spring. However, the timing of spawning differs. The M. secta population synchronously spawned in August while the M. nasuta population spawned lightly in late spring and more heavily in the fall. Fecundity estimates indicate M. nasuta adds 140% of winter weight in gametes and M. secta only adds 43% of winter weight in gametes. Spat fall was detected …

Infection Of Smallmouth Bass And Goldfish By Two Species Of Saprolegnia, Cheryl A. Mcginley Jul 1974

Infection Of Smallmouth Bass And Goldfish By Two Species Of Saprolegnia, Cheryl A. Mcginley

Dissertations and Theses

This study consisted of several experiments designed to compare the ability of two species of fungi, Saprolegnia ferax and S. parasitica to grow on two species of fish, smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) and goldfish (Carassius auratus), and to determine the criteria necessary for the development of these infections.

The results indicate that water in the fish tanks must be slightly acid (pH 6), warm (22°C), nonmoving, and that the fish must be wounded in order for fungal infection to occur. Cool water (18°C) and moving water, caused by aeration and filtration, are detrimental to fungal colony …

Feeding And Food Preferences By Three Sympatric Species Of Cyprinodontid Fishes, Lawrence J. Baer Jul 1974

Feeding And Food Preferences By Three Sympatric Species Of Cyprinodontid Fishes, Lawrence J. Baer

OES Theses and Dissertations

The feeding and food utilization by three sympatric species of cyprinodontid fishes was examined using a modified Ivlev Electivity Co-efficient. Results indicated that although Fundulus heteroalitus and Fundulus majalis are sympatric in the area examined, their usage of the available food source varied noticeably. The third investigated species, Cyprinodon variegatus, fed mainly upon a vegetal detritus food source varied by the consumption of invertebrate and vertebrate food items. Slight intra-specific variances of diet between crespuscular periods was also discussed.

Seasonal Periodicity Of Dominant, Benthic, Marine Macroalgae Of The North Jetty Of Brazos Santiago Pass, Texas, As Related To Environmental Factors, Gary J. Penn

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The seasonality of marine algae may be influenced by a large number of factors. These factors Include water clarity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, salinity, light Intensity, precipitation, air temperature, water turbulence, and daylength. The purpose of this study was to determine seasonal patterns and the effect of these variables on the algae.

The results Indicate that 24 dominant, benthic, genera of algae have two seasonal populations. A winter-spring population Includes algae in abundance between January and May. A fall population includes algae in abundance during September, October and November, Results of environmental studies indicate day-length dominant factors in algal …

Observations On The Distribution And Composition Of Zooplankton In Portions Of The Intracoastal Waterway, Virginia, O. Clair Hillard Jr. Apr 1974

Observations On The Distribution And Composition Of Zooplankton In Portions Of The Intracoastal Waterway, Virginia, O. Clair Hillard Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Five stations were established in the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, the Dismal Swamp Canal, the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal and the North Landing River. Representative samples of zooplankton were taken from October 1971 to June 1972. A. total of 57 species were identified and discussions regarding seasonal distribution in relation to physical factors and circulation are presented.

The composition of the zooplankton was found to fluctuate greatly due to the variables characteristic of the study area. The combined effect of tidal flow with freshwater input in conjunction with drainage from the Great Dismal Swamp, results in isolated populations …

Fisheries Report No 15 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery 1972 - 1973, G. R. Morgan, E H. Barker Jan 1974

Fisheries Report No 15 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery 1972 - 1973, G. R. Morgan, E H. Barker

Fisheries Research Reports

The fishery for the western rock lobster* is one of the most important single fisheries in Australia and an important export earner for the State. The fishery is governed by a complex set of regulations which have been reviewed by Bowen (1971) and which are designed to limit the total effort to acceptable levels and to enforce a legal minimum size. It is thus important to constantly monitor the state of the fishery both to ensure that the effort is remaining within the accepted limits and that the regulations are adequately performing their function of maintaining reasonably stable catches. Inherent …

The annual net primary production of nine types of marsh communities common in Mississippi Gulf Coast estuaries were studied by means of the Harvest Method. Production values ranged from 600 g m-2 yr-1 for a Sagittaria lancifolia marsh to 2330 g m-2 yr-1 for a Phragmites communis marsh. Primary productivity values for the other marsh types are Juncus roemerianus - 1697 g m-2 yr-1, Scirpus robustus - 1056 g m-2 yr-1, Spartina cynosuroides - 2190 g m-2 yr-1, Spartina patens - 1922 g …

A Review Of Salinity Problems Of Organisms In United States Coastal Areas Subject To The Effects Of Engineering Works, Gordon Gunter, Buena S. Ballard, A. Venkataramiah Jan 1974

A Review Of Salinity Problems Of Organisms In United States Coastal Areas Subject To The Effects Of Engineering Works, Gordon Gunter, Buena S. Ballard, A. Venkataramiah

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The nongaseous substances that normally move in and out of cells are metabolites, water and salts. The common salts in water determine its salinity, and the definition of sea water salinity and its composition are discussed. The relationships of salinity to all phyla of animals living in the coastal waters are reviewed, with emphasis on the estuaries of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States, which are particularly influenced by coastal engineering works and changes of salinity caused thereby.

The fauna of estuaries is made up of a few brackish water species which complete their life cycles there, …

An Estuarine Low-Temperature Fish-Kill In Mississippi, With Remarks On Restricted Necropsies, Robin M. Overstreet Jan 1974

An Estuarine Low-Temperature Fish-Kill In Mississippi, With Remarks On Restricted Necropsies, Robin M. Overstreet

Gulf and Caribbean Research

In January 1973, large numbers of Mugil cephalus (striped mullet), weighing approximately 250 gm each, died in two freshwater localities in tidewater bayous of Jackson County, Mississippi. Fish identified as Mugil curema, M. cephalus, Megalops atlantica, Dormitator maculatus, and Fundulus grandis were found dead in other low saline estuarine areas. Fish-kills during cold periods are less commonly encountered in Mississippi than in Texas or Florida. This particular incident is attributed to conditions of stress for fishes incompletely acclimated to the encountered low temperatures. The most deleterious stress was the low saline water which probably allowed a …
