Acanthohaustorius Uncinus, A New Species Of Sand-Burrowing Amphipod From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, With Notes On Its Ecology (Haustoriidae: Haustoriinae), John M. Foster

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A new species of sand-burrowing amphipod, Acanthohaustorius uncinus, is described from vegetated and unvegetated estuarine sands from St. Andrew Bay, Florida and East Ship Island, Mississippi. The genus Acanthohaustorius has been informally recorded from St. Andrew Bay, but this species is now formally described from the Gulf of Mexico. A. uncinus n. sp. is most similar to A. millsi of the Open American Atlantic coast. It differs from A. millsi in the presence of a dorsally directed, hooked spine on the peduncle of uropod 1 and the totally cleft telson lobes. Information on the ecology of A. uncinus n. …

Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracardia) Of The Gulf Of Mexico. Vi. On The Genus Mesotanais Dollfus, 1897 With Descriptions Of Two New Species, M. Longisetosus And M. Vadicola, Jurgen Sieg, Richard W. Heard Jan 1989

Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracardia) Of The Gulf Of Mexico. Vi. On The Genus Mesotanais Dollfus, 1897 With Descriptions Of Two New Species, M. Longisetosus And M. Vadicola, Jurgen Sieg, Richard W. Heard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Two new species of tanaidaceans belonging to the family Leptocheliidae were collected from the continental shelves and slopes of the eastem and Gulf coasts of the United States. Both of these species are assigned to the poorly known genus Mesotanais Dollfus, 1897. Mesotanais is unique within the Leptocheliidae because its members lack eyes. The second supposedly important generic character, uniramous uropods, reported in the original description is considered to be a misdiagnosis. The assumption of this error is supported by the rediscovery of the type-species, Mesotanais dubius Dollfus, 1897 (Sieg and Bird, in press). In the present study, the genus …

The Growth Of Cultchless Crassostrea Virginica Spat At Biloxi Bay, Mississippi Using Different Methods Of Culture, John T. Ogle Jan 1989

The Growth Of Cultchless Crassostrea Virginica Spat At Biloxi Bay, Mississippi Using Different Methods Of Culture, John T. Ogle

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Oyster spat produced from the experimental hatchery of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at Point Cadet, Biloxi, Mississippi, were grown under a variety of conditions. Recovery of spat planted on adjacent bay bottom was negligible, despite the use of either whole oyster valves, crushed oyster shell or clam shell as a substrate. Negligible growth occurred for spat held in vertical and horizontal water tanks. Growth of spat in horizontal tanks was affected by the density of stocking, with lower densities producing faster growth. Growth in all studies was slower than anticipated and a comparison on growth for spat from a …

Community Responses To Variable Predation: Field Studies With Sunfish And Freshwater Macroinvertebrates, Mark J. Butler Iv Jan 1989

Community Responses To Variable Predation: Field Studies With Sunfish And Freshwater Macroinvertebrates, Mark J. Butler Iv

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The impact of variable predation by bluegill sunfish on macroinvertebrate prey in a North Florida lake is examined. Variable predation may occur in many systems and may contribute substantially to the spatial heterogeneity, temporal inconstancy and species composition of prey communities.

Patchy, temporally variable predation characterized middepth and deep lake habitats, whereas in the shallow zone predation was relatively constant and homogeneous. Predation varied significantly every 2-4 wk in the mid-depth zone, but varied little between consecutive weeks or days. Caging experiments revealed that variable predation altered prey community composition and increased the mean size and size range of some …

Are Artificial "Witham" Surface Collectors Adequate Indicators Of Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Recruitment?, Mark J. Butler Iv, William F. Herrnkind

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the local dynamics of Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) postlarval influx, settlement, and recruitment may be essential for the responsible management of this important and heavily exploited resource. Most lobster recruitment research programs in the Caribbean employ derivations of the "Witham"-type surface collector to monitor postlarval (puerulus) lobster influx. However, the relevance of data obtained from surface collectors with respect to the estimation of actual puerulus influx, settlement, or recruitment to subsequent benthic juvenile stages remains untested. We investigated that relevance on regional (i.e., tens of kilometers) and local (i.e., tens of meters) scales by examining the …

Calliax Jonesi, N. Sp. (Decapoda: Thalassinidea: Callianassidae) From The Northwestern Bahamas, Richard W. Heard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Two specimens of Calliax jonesi, n. sp., were collected from fine carbonate sediments in 3 to 5 m of water at Bimini Harbor, Bahamas. Of the species presently assigned to the genus Calliax de Saint Laurent, 1973, C. jonesi appears to be most closely related to C. quadracuta (Biffar, 1970), presently known from the Atlantic coast of Venezuela and the Florida Keys. Calliax jonesi is distinguished from C. quadracuta by: (1) the absence of a distal spinose process on the dorsal and ventral margins of the carpus of the first pair of chelipeds, (2) the armature and shape of …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Oncholaimoides elongatus is redescribed from specimens collected from subtidal, shallow-water sediments from the Gulf of Mexico, Bay County, Florida. The original description of this species was based on a single male specimen from the Gulf of Mexico, Baldwin County, Alabama. Descriptions of Oncholaimoides rugosus and Oncholaimoides striatus from subtidal sediments of St. Andrew Bay, Bay County, Florida are given. A key to the species of Oncholaimoides is provided.

Excorallana Delaneyi, N. Sp. (Crustacea: Isopoda: Excorallanidae) From The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, With Observations On Adult Characters And Sexual Dimorphism In Related Species Of Excorallana Stebbing, 1904, Ilya Stone, Richard W. Heard Jan 1989

Heard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Excorallana delaneyi n. sp. was found associated with the sponges Halichondria sp. and Hymeniacidon sp. in St. Joseph Bay, Florida. Excorallana delaneyi is most similar to E. berbicensis Boone, 1918 described from Brazil, but it can be distinguished from that species and other members of the genus by the shape and spination of the uropods and pleotelson. A key is presented to separate E. delaneyi and the other seven species of Excorallana that lack lateral notches in the pleotelson. Morphological differences between the subadults and adults of E. delaneyi are described, and possible taxonomic problems resulting from such differences in …

Fisheries Report No. 81 - A Research Vessel Survey Of Pearl Oyster And Prawn Resources North-West Of Broome Western Australia, J. W. Penn, R. Dybdahl

Fisheries Research Reports

Data from a research vessel survey in September and October 1987 and commercial catch records have been used to assess the pearl oyster and prawn stocks along the Broome coastline between 17°S and 18°S latitudes. Observations made by pearl divers indicated that the survey zone contained commercially significant quantities of unfished pearl oysters particularly in the depth range 10 to 27 m, but also extending out to 44 m depth. The pearl oysters in the survey zone were found to be predominantly mature animals and appeared to be part of the now lightly fished deep water spawning population extending from …

Aspects Of The Ecology Of The Mesopelagic Fish Gonostoma Elongatum (Gonostomatidae, Stomiiformes) In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Thomas M. Lancraft, Thomas L. Hopkins, Joseph J. Torres

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Gonostoma elongatum is an important mesopelagic fish found throughout the world at subtropical-tropical latitudes. This study examined its distribution, abundance and life history in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The species was a strong diel migrator, found from 25 to 325 m at night and from 425 to 725 m during the day with small fish occurring shallower than large fish. Numerical abundance and biomass were high, rivaling the dominant species of myctophids in the Gulf of Mexico. There no obvious seasonal fluctuations in population abundance. G. elongatum is a protandric hermaphrodite whose population breeds throughout the year and females …

Instability Waves In The Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Robert H. Weisberg, T. J. Weingartner Nov 1988

Instability Waves In The Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Robert H. Weisberg, T. J. Weingartner

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Evidence is presented for the generation of planetary waves by barotropic instability within the cyclonic shear region of the Atlantic Ocean's South Equatorial Current (SEC). Immediately following the springtime intensification of the southeast trade wind, which accelerates the SEC westward, a packet of waves with central periodicity of around 25 days is observed lasting for about three cycles. Independent wavenumber analyses on 1983 and 1984 data give newly identical zonal wavelengths and phase speed estimates of around 1100 km and −50 cm s−1. The waves are anisotropic and spatially inhomogeneous with generation confined primarily to the mixed layer. …

Vertical Distribution Of Phytoplankton Populations Along The Northeastern Continental Shelf Margin Of The United States, Bruce Burwell Wagoner Oct 1988

Vertical Distribution Of Phytoplankton Populations Along The Northeastern Continental Shelf Margin Of The United States, Bruce Burwell Wagoner

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A study of phytoplankton vertical distribution at six stations along the northeast continental shelf of the United States was conducted in April 1984.

A total of 168 taxa were identified from nine phylogenetic groups collected at depths up to 150 m. Highest cell concentrations and cell volumes were in the upper 30 m. Greatest cell concentrations were produced by diatoms and a pico-nanoplankton component, with cell volumes mainly the product of diatoms and dinoflagellates. A high degree of variability was observed between phylogenetic groups within each station, but less variability was noted for phylogenetic categories at different stations.

Little difference …

Interactions Between Aquatic Chromogenic Bacteria And Pathogenic Vibrio Spp., John Louis Harris Oct 1988

Interactions Between Aquatic Chromogenic Bacteria And Pathogenic Vibrio Spp., John Louis Harris

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Interactions between populations inhabiting an ecosystem are responsible, in large part, for determining which species coexist in that ecosystem. In this study, interactions between selected Vibrio species, V. alginolyticus and V. anguillarum, and marine heterotrophic, chromogenic bacteria in aquatic microcosms were investigated. The ultimate goal of this project was to evaluate the feasibility of ex ploiting competitive interactions as a means to biologically control growth of the pathogenic marine bacteria, V. alginolyticus and V. anguillarum. In the majority of experiments (14/16), if chromogenic species were allowed to develop stable populations before a Vibrio spp. was introduced into a …

A Review Of The Pacific Members Of The Gobiid Fish Genus Bollmannia Jordan, Robin L. Bedenbaugh Oct 1988

A Review Of The Pacific Members Of The Gobiid Fish Genus Bollmannia Jordan, Robin L. Bedenbaugh

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The Pacific members of the genus Bollmannia Jordan 1890 comprise seven species of gobies distributed from Baja California to Peru and west to the Galapagos Archipelago.

Previous authors recognized nine nominal species, all known only from their brief original accounts. Those accounts do not allow for proper discrimination of the species. All nominal species were re examined using meristic, morphometric, and pigment-pattern characteristics. Three of the nine nominal species are herein considered synonymous with previously described forms. The six valid nominal species are redescribed, a new species is described, and a key and illustrations are provided for the seven valid …

Survival And Reproduction Of The Freshwater Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Paludosus (Gibbes 1850) (Decapoda:Palaemonidae), In Saline Water, Brian Thomas Lowe Oct 1988

Survival And Reproduction Of The Freshwater Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Paludosus (Gibbes 1850) (Decapoda:Palaemonidae), In Saline Water, Brian Thomas Lowe

OES Theses and Dissertations

To determine the effects of salinity on adult and larval survival, egg deposition, egg hatching and metamorphosis, shrimp were held in the laboratory and exposed to treatment salinities ranging from O to 35 ppt. Tests on adult survival indicate a 96 hour LC-50 between 30 and 35 ppt. Longer term tests on adult survival showed high mortality in salinities greater than 15 ppt. Shrimp became ovigerous in salinities of O - 20 ppt with egg hatching and metamorphosis limited to O - 5 ppt. Starved- larvae hatched from field captured ovigerous females in O ppt were able to metamorphose in …

Research Note: The Summers Of 1986 And 1987 (Or "What Happened To The Whales?), John C. Jahoda, Michael C. Ryer Sep 1988

Research Note: The Summers Of 1986 And 1987 (Or "What Happened To The Whales?), John C. Jahoda, Michael C. Ryer

Bridgewater Review

The summer of 1986 saw a marked change in the ecosystem of Stellwagen Bank off the coast of Massachusetts. The most noticeable effect of this was the disappearance from the Bank of the Humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae. From a biological research viewpoint the events of the past two summers were very dramatic and valuable since they verified some parts and clarified others of a model of the Stellwagen Bank ecosystem that we have been working on for several years. These events also provided a clearer understanding of the development and dynamics of the Stellwagen Bank ecosystem from the early 1970's …

Vertical Structure Of Low-Frequency Variability In The Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean, T. Y. Tang, Robert H. Weisberg, D. Halpern Jul 1988

Vertical Structure Of Low-Frequency Variability In The Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean, T. Y. Tang, Robert H. Weisberg, D. Halpern

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The vertical structure of low frequency velocity and temperature variability in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean is examined using surface and subsurface moored current meter data from 0°, 110°W between 20 and 3027 m depths over the period 30 March 1980 to 2 February 1981. Three methods of analysis are employed: vertical coherence, empirical orthogonal functions, and linear least-squares dynamical mode decompositions. Direct evidence is given for the existence of first baroclinic mode Kelvin waves in the east component of velocity and vertical displacement (estimated from temperature) in that the vertical displacement is coherent and in phase over the water …

Seasonal Phytoplankton Assemblages In The Nansemond River, Virginia, Cindy Eleanor Shomers Jul 1988

Seasonal Phytoplankton Assemblages In The Nansemond River, Virginia, Cindy Eleanor Shomers

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A monthly phytoplankton study was conducted on the Nansemond River from November 1984 to October 1985. Light microscopy was utilized to characterize the resident populations, their cell concentrations and to provide a general comparison to other regional studies of river systems considered more polluted. The results divided the flora into two major categories. The first group was a pico-nanoplankton component composed of Cyanobacteria and Chlorophycean cells 1-10 um in diameter. The second group was a microplankton assemblage of Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae, Cryptophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanobacteria and Euglenophyceae. The pico-nanoplankton had a unimodal abundance pattern with peak concentrations occurring in spring. The microplankton …

Effects Of Ammonia, Salinity And Oxygen On The Growth And Energetics Of The Grass Shrimp, Palaemonetes Pugio, Ahmad Mohammed Altayaran Jul 1988

Effects Of Ammonia, Salinity And Oxygen On The Growth And Energetics Of The Grass Shrimp, Palaemonetes Pugio, Ahmad Mohammed Altayaran

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The growth and energy budget of juvenile grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, were examined under various combinations of ammonia, salinity and dissolved oxygen. Experiments were performed to determine the effects of multiple stresses on the growth and physiological processes of the shrimp. The experimental design also allowed an evaluation of the effectiveness of several techniques for determining the productivity potential of aquatic animals exposed to stress.

A flow-through system was used to produce combinations of ammonia concentrations (0, 3, 6 and 12 mg/l) and salinities (20, 25, 30 and 35 ppt) for 21-day tests. The tests were conducted at high …

Economics And Marketing Of Western Australia Pilchards., Scp Fisheries Consultants Pty Ltd

Fisheries Management Papers

The 1986/87 Australian catch was about 8,300 tonnes. At present levels of fishing,it has been suggested that this could be substantially increased. The fishery is not in danger of over-exploitation. Rather, the problem could be that there is more fish available than existing markets could absorb. However, there are prospects for increasing the present volume of fish sold domestically and for developing new products and markets in Australia and overseas.
