Total organic carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (CHN) analyses were performed on 147 surficial sediment samples from study areas off the Norwalk Islands and Milford, Connecticut, in western Long Island Sound. The CHN data and gross lithologic descriptions of the sediments are reported herein. The concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC), hydrogen, and nitrogen in these samples average 1.54, 1.40, and 0.17 weight percent, respectively. The individual CHN concentrations vary inversely with grain size, with CHN values increasing with the percent fines. Increasing nutrient inputs and decreasing circulation cause TOC and nitrogen values to generally increase westward within the Sound. C/N …

A 240-Year Stable Oxygen And Carbon Isotopic Record In A Coral From South Florida: Implications For The Prediction Of Precipitation In Southern Florida, Peter Koenraad Swart, Richard E. Dodge, Harold J. Hudson

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

This study reports on the δ18O and δ13C composition of the skeleton from a 240-year-old specimen of Montastraea faveolata growing in Biscayne National Park, South Florida. Annual variations in the δ18O of the skeleton deposited during the summer months show a bimodal correlation with summer rainfall. During wetter years, the δ18O of the coral skeleton and the amount of precipitation during the summer months are inversely correlated (r = -0. 7) reflecting dilution of the seawater by meteoric water lower in δ18O. During years in which summer rainfall is less …

Ecology And Behavior Of Maxillipius Commensalis, A Gorgonophile Amphipod From Madang, Papua New Guinea (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Maxillipiidae), James Darwin Thomas Jan 1996

Ecology And Behavior Of Maxillipius Commensalis, A Gorgonophile Amphipod From Madang, Papua New Guinea (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Maxillipiidae), James Darwin Thomas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Maxillipius commensalis Lowry, is reported as an ectocommensal on arborescent gorgonaceans from coral reefs at Madang, Papua New Guinea. The family is reviewed and the male of this species is described. In-situ behavior studies show the amphipods to crowd close together in large numbers on one side of a gorgonian stalk. The terminal articles of the sixth pereopods are greatly elongated and whip-like and are waved at the sides in a circular motion, possibly facilitating spacing or feeding. When disturbed, the amphipods react en masse as a coherent group rather than as individuals.

Diet And Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The Yellow Stingray, Urolophus Jamaicensis, T. Patrick Quinn Jan 1996

Diet And Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The Yellow Stingray, Urolophus Jamaicensis, T. Patrick Quinn

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Urolophus jamaicensis, the yellow stingray, is a common elasmobranch found on and around the coral reefs off Florida's southeastern coast. Its diet consists of polychaetes, crustaceans, nemerteans, sipunculids, nematodes, and chaetognaths with polychaetes and crustaceans comprising almost 67% of the stomach contents by volume. There does not appear to be any diet preference between the male and females stingrays. The seasonal changes in diet preference are limited to an increase in the proportion of polychaetes found in the stomach during spring when compared to fall.

Characterization Of A Basolateral Electroneutral Na+/H+ Antiporter In Atlantic Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreatic Epithelial Vesicles, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn Jan 1996

Characterization Of A Basolateral Electroneutral Na+/H+ Antiporter In Atlantic Lobster (Homarus Americanus) Hepatopancreatic Epithelial Vesicles, Jeff Duerr, Gregory A. Ahearn

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Purified basolateral membrane vesicles (BLMVs) were prepared from Atlantic lobster (Homarus americanus) hepatopancreas using a Percoll density gradient technique. Enrichments of the Na+/K+-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase activities of these vesicles were 15.4- and 1.2- fold, respectively. The presence of amiloride-sensitive Na+/H+ exchange was demonstrated. Contrary to electrogenic 2Na+/1H+ exchange on apical membranes from the same tissue, kinetic studies of Na+ transport by these basolateral membranes indicate an electroneutral antiport with a Km of 28±1.7 mmol l21 and a Jmax of 1.74±0.13 mmol mg21 min21. Amiloride interacted at a single binding site (Ki=39mmol l21) and external Li+ was shown to be …

Regulation Of Beta-Glucosidase In Marine Bacteria, Dennis Stetter Jan 1996

Regulation Of Beta-Glucosidase In Marine Bacteria, Dennis Stetter

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The following is a study of the regulation of production of a catabolic enzyme, beta-glucosidase, by isolated strains of marine bacteria. Catabolic enzymes transform organic matter to monosaccharides which are utilized as an energy source for growth by bacteria. The bacterial strains were isolated from the Gulf Stream off the coast of Florida, as well as from particulate matter collected from waters adjacent to the Florida coast.

The first section describes the preparation of a liquid medium using sterile saltwater supplemented with inorganic nutrients and a carbohydrate component. This medium allowed growth of marine bacteria under carbohydrate-limiting conditions. A solid …

Phosphorous Limitation And Trophic Status In Limestone Quarry Lakes, Dade County, Fl, Isaac Peter Chase Jan 1996

Phosphorous Limitation And Trophic Status In Limestone Quarry Lakes, Dade County, Fl, Isaac Peter Chase

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

While limestone quarry lakes have existed in South Florida for many years, only recently have they received serious scrutiny. A thorough understanding of the trophic dynamics of these lakes has yet to be achieved. Questions have arisen as to the value of these lakes for such purposes as water reclamation, conservation, and recreational use. The purpose of this study was twofold, 1) to investigate the trophic processes within these lakes with special regard to phosphorus limitation, and 2) to help provide a better understanding of the linmology of these lakes, specifically through the quantification and identification of the invertebrate life …

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell Jan 1996

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell

CCPO Publications

A size-structured, time and vertically-dependent model was used to investigate the effects of water column structure on the distribution of larvae of the oyster Crassostrea virginica. Formulations used to model larval growth and behavior are based upon laboratory studies. Simulated vertical larval distributions obtained for conditions representative of a well-mixed, partially stratified and strongly stratified water column illustrate the effect that salinity and temperature gradients have on moderating larval swimming and hence on larvae vertical location. For well-mixed conditions, smaller larvae are dispersed throughout most of the water column. For strongly stratified conditions, the smaller-sized larvae cluster within the …

The Filtration Rate, Oxygen Consumption And Biomass Of The Introduced Polychaete Sabella Spallanzanii Gmelin Within Cockburn Sound : Can It Control Phytoplankton Levels And Is It An Efficient Filter Feeder?, Geordie Clapin

Theses : Honours

Sabella spallanzanii, a filter feeding, sabellid polychaete worm which is common in the Mediterranean Sea, was recently discovered in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia. The species has been in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria for about 10 years, where it has spread widely, competes with native species and has economic impacts on the local scallop fishery. In Cockburn Sound, S. spallanzanii has colonised a shallow, sandy area known as the Southern Flats, reaching a mean biomass of 258 gDW m2 , as well as almost all artificial structures such as jetties and navigational marker pylons. A large biomass of this introduced …

Muscular Basis Of Buccal Pressure: Inflation Behavior In The Striped Burrfish Chilomycterus Schoepfi, Peter C. Wainwright, Ralph G. Turingan Jan 1996

Muscular Basis Of Buccal Pressure: Inflation Behavior In The Striped Burrfish Chilomycterus Schoepfi, Peter C. Wainwright, Ralph G. Turingan

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

We examined the relationship between commonly measured features of cranial muscle activity and the magnitude of sub- and superambient pressure measured inside the buccal cavity of the striped burrfish Chilomycterus schoepfi during inflation behavior. Buccal pressure was recorded simultaneously with electromyographic (EMG) records of activity from three expansive-phase muscles (levator operculi, levator pectoralis and hyohyoideus abductor) and three compressive-phase muscles (adductor mandibulae, protractor hyoideus and protractor pectoralis) in eight individuals. We quantified EMG activity in approximately 30 inflation cycles per fish by measuring the burst duration, rectified integrated area, intensity of activity (area divided by duration) and onset time relative …

Seasonal Dynamics Of Dental Sexual Dimorphism In The Atlantic Stingray Dasyatis Sabina, Stephen M. Kajiura, Timothy C. Tricas Jan 1996

Seasonal Dynamics Of Dental Sexual Dimorphism In The Atlantic Stingray Dasyatis Sabina, Stephen M. Kajiura, Timothy C. Tricas

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Cartilaginous fishes continuously replace their teeth throughout their life (polyphyodonty) and often show a sexually dimorphic dentition that was previously thought to be an invariant sex character. Radial vector analysis of tooth shape in the polyphyodontic stingray Dasyatis sabina across a consecutive 24 month period shows a stable molariform morphology for females but a periodic shift in male dentition from a female-like molariform to a recurved cuspidate form during the reproductive season. The grip tenacity of the male dentition is greater for the cuspidate form that occurs during the mating season than for the molariform dentition that occurs during the …

Faunal Diversity Among Avian Parasite Assemblages: The Interaction Of History, Ecology, And Biogeography In Marine Systems, Eric P. Hoberg Jan 1996

Faunal Diversity Among Avian Parasite Assemblages: The Interaction Of History, Ecology, And Biogeography In Marine Systems, Eric P. Hoberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Systematics and parasite biodiversity provide power and predictability in broad studies of history, ecology and biogeography in marine systems. Parasitic helminths are elegant markers of contemporary and historical ecological relationships, geographic distribution and host-phylogeny. Complex life cycles of helminths are strongly correlated with intricate food-webs. Dependence on a series of intermediate, paratenic, and definitive hosts indicates that each parasite species represents an array of organisms within a community and tracks broadly and predictably across many trophic levels. Host and geographic ranges of parasites are historically constrained by genealogical and ecological associations, and these determinents interact resulting in characteristic parasite community …

Use Of Stems Of Emergent Plants For Oviposition By The Florida Applesnail, Pomacea Paludosa, And The Implications For Marsh Management, Richard L. Turner Jan 1996

Use Of Stems Of Emergent Plants For Oviposition By The Florida Applesnail, Pomacea Paludosa, And The Implications For Marsh Management, Richard L. Turner

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

This field study examined the distribution among emergent plant stems of egg clutches deposited by the amphibious Florida applesnail in four types of marsh in east central Florida. Clutch density was highest along the edge of sawgrass marsh and zero in deep marsh. Densities in maidencane and mixed shallow marshes were about one-third the density in sawgrass. In all marsh types, clutches occurred preferentially on plants having broad stems that generally exceeded 6 mm in diameter at water level. Substratum limitation for oviposition increased with the frequency of narrow-stemmed plants, but stem height was rarely limiting. The four marsh types …

Effect Of Light/Dark Transition On Carbon Translocation In Eelgrass Zostera Marina Seedlings, Richard C. Zimmerman, Randall S. Alberte Jan 1996

Effect Of Light/Dark Transition On Carbon Translocation In Eelgrass Zostera Marina Seedlings, Richard C. Zimmerman, Randall S. Alberte

OES Faculty Publications

Carbon translocation in the marine macrophyte Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) was investigated to elucidate the impact of light/dark transitions on sucrose partitioning between roots and shoots. After exposure of leaves to C-14-bicarbonate, the level of C-14-labelled photoassimilates increased monotonically in both leaves and fully aerobic roots of plants maintained in the light. Accumulation of C-14 in roots and leaves ceased abruptly when plants were transferred to darkness that induced root anaerobiosis even though C-14 levels remained high in the dark-exposed leaves. Thus, translocation of C-14 photoassimilates from shoots to roots was inhibited when roots became anoxic. Anoxia induced by light …

Development And Lipid Composition Of The Harpacticoid Copepod Nitocra Spinipes Reared On Different Diets, Gregory M. Weiss, George B. Mcmanus, H. Rodger Harvey Jan 1996

Development And Lipid Composition Of The Harpacticoid Copepod Nitocra Spinipes Reared On Different Diets, Gregory M. Weiss, George B. Mcmanus, H. Rodger Harvey

OES Faculty Publications

We reared the harpacticoid copepod Nitocra spinipes on diets of bacteria, a diatom, or a macroalga, evaluating survivorship and growth in short-term (≤ 1 generation) experiments. Lipid content of the copepods and their diets was measured and used as an index of nutrition. Although growth, survivorship and lipid content of N. spinipes were significantly greater when fed the diatom, which had the highest lipid content of the 3 diets, the copepod was able to develop from egg to adult when fed a lipid- poor bacterial diet. Furthermore, this species was able to go through developmental molts without the addition of …

Herrnkind, Michael J. Childress, Rodney Bertelsen, William Sharp, Thomas Matthews, Jennifer M. Field, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Florida Bay, the shallow lagoon separating mainland Florida and the Florida Keys, USA, is experiencing an unprecedented series of ecological disturbances. In 1991, following reports of other ecosystem perturbations, we observed widespread and persistent blooms of cyanobacteria that coincided with the decimation of sponge communities over hundreds of square kilometers. Juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus, among other animals, rely on sponges for shelter; the impact of sponge loss on the abundance of lobsters and their use of shelter, in particular, has been dramatic. The loss of sponges on 27 experimental sites in hard bottom habitat in central Florida Bay …

A Review Of Ministerial Policy Guidelines For Rock Lobster Processing In Western Australia From The Working Group Appointed By The Minister For Fisheries And Chaired By Peter Rich, Peter Rich

Fisheries Management Papers

The rock lobster processing industry in Western Australia has a long history of management. Whilst management of the industry through the Fisheries Department has obviously been successful in helping to build the rock lobster industry into one of the State's major export industries, this approach is not without problems. With the introduction of the Fisheries Management Act 1994, the Minister for Fisheries deemed it appropriate to appoint an expert group to review the existing regulation of the rock lobster processing sector, draft the necessary guidelines to assist the Executive Director of the Fisheries Department make decisions on rock lobster processing …
