Metamorphosis Behaviour And Regulation In Tsetse Flies (Glossina Spp.) (Diptera: Glossinidae): A Review, J. Žďárek, D. L. Denlinger
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
This review examines the recent literature on tsetse (Glossina spp.) metamorphosis behaviour and its regulation. The behavioural events associated with metamorphosis are highly specific and most occur only once during the life of the fly. The review begins with the larva's commitment to metamorphosis and then discusses the behaviour associated with parturition, wandering of the third instar larva, pupariation, pupation and adult eclosion. While certain aspects of tsetse metamorphosis behaviour are common to the higher Diptera, the peculiar reproductive strategy of tsetse has dictated many modifications. Most notable of the tsetse peculiarities are the larva's late commitment to metamorphosis, the …
Comparative Toxicity Of Pyrethroid Insecticides To Terrestrial And Aquatic Insects, Blair Siegfried
Comparative Toxicity Of Pyrethroid Insecticides To Terrestrial And Aquatic Insects, Blair Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The acute toxicities of three pyrethroid insecticides (permethrin, cypermethrin, and bifenthrin) and one organophosphate insecticide (chlorpyrifos) were compared by topical application and static exposure to a variety of terrestrial and aquatic insects. Mayflies and damselflies were the most susceptible taxa tested by both exposure methods. The aquatic insects were generally more susceptible than the terrestrial insects when compared on a dose per body weight basis, although the differences were smaller than expected, given the extremely low concentrations that produce toxic effects by static exposure.

Activity And Electrophoretic Characterization Of Esterases In Insecticide-Resistant And Susceptible Strains Of German Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), Suresh K. Prabhakaran, Shripat T. Kamble
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Strains of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), were tested for resistance to three insecticides using the time-mortality response technique in comparison with known susceptible strains. Dursban-R and Macy strains indicated high levels of resistance to chlorpyrifos and moderate resistance to propoxur and cypermethrin. The hydrolytic activity of esterase enzymes was determined with a model substrate, p-nitrophenyl acetate. The specific activity of the enzymes increased with a corresponding increase in substrate concentration. Maximum activity was observed at 80 μM. The resistant strains had Significantly higher activity than the susceptible strains. The enzyme activity also increased with an increase in pH. …

Economic Injury Levels For Western Bean Cutworm, Loxagrotis Albicosta (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Eggs And Larvae In Field Corn, Larry L. Appel, Robert J. Wright, John B. Campbell
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Yield losses caused by different densities of western bean cutworm, [Loxagrotis albicosta (Smith)], egg masses and young larvae in field corn [Zea mays(L.), Pioneer 3475] were studied in replicated field cages in Perkins County, Nebraska, during 1989 and 1990. Treatments consisted of four egg masses per plant, one egg mass per plant, ten young larvae per plant, three young larvae per plant and an uninfested caged check. Infestations were timed to correspond with the natural occurrence of western bean cutworms each year. Larval density at dent stage and total grain yield were measured. Linear regression equations were …

Effectiveness Of The Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria Bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. For Control Of The Stem Borer Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) In Maize In Kenya, Nguya K. Maniania
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and insecticide trichlorfon were compared for the control of stem borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) in field experiments at different times of infestation. Egg masses of C. partellus at the blackhead stage were pinned to the undersurface of the maize leaves. Two fungal formulations, conidial aqueous suspensions and a granular formulation, were applied. Compared with the untreated checks, the numbers of surviving C. partellus larvae were significantly reduced in treatments where B. bassiana was applied at a concentration of 1013 conidia ha-1 as granules and as two aqueous spray formulations. No significant difference in numbers …

Ultrastructure Of Nosema Marucae Sp. N. (Microspora, Nosematidae), A Pathogen Of Maruca Testulalis (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae), Maurice O. Odindo, Walter G.Z.O. Jura
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The development of Nosema marucae was followed in its host, the legume pod borer Maruca testulalis. The meronts had an irregular cell body and were binucleated, with the large diplokaryon occupying most of the cell. The sporonts contained many rough endoplastic reticula. The sporoblasts had a granular cytoplasm with a large number of ribosomes, and nuclear division and cellular cleavage were prevalent, particularly from 84 to 120 h after inoculation. Sporoblasts and young spores were evident from 108 to 144 h after inoculation. In the mature spores, the exocuticle had a rough and sculptured surface and the endocuticle thinned considerably …

The isoenzyme profiles of nine sandfly species (Phlebotomus duboscqi, P. elegonensi, P. martini, P. pedifer, Sergentomiya antennatus, S. bedfordi, S. garnhami, S. graingeri and S. schwetzi) from Kenya collected from the field and reared in the Medical Vectors Research Programme of the ICIPE were determined by isoelectric focusing (IEF) on mini ultra-thin polyacrylamide gels supplied by Pharmacia. Three of the nine isoenzymes screened (MDH, G-6-PD, PGM, ME, ICD, GAPDH, 6-PDG, HK and GPI), namely GPI, PGM and ME, gave banding patterns of taxonomic value. Cluster analysis of the simple matching coefficients gave two distinct groupings corresponding to previously described Sergentomyia …

Evidence For The Sensory Receptor(S) Of The Mounting Sex Pheromone In Two Species Of Ixodid Ticks, Dermacentor Variabilis (Say) And Dermacentor Andersoni Stiles, James Stephen Phillips
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The foreleg claw sensilla were determined to be the receptors of the female contact sex pheromone, MSP (mounting sex pheromone), in D. variabilis, D. andersoni and A. americanum male ticks. In all three tick species, the claw sensilla consists of six anteriorly-directed setae arranged in three symmetrical pairs, two each on the opposite sides of the apotele of the claw and one on the ventral side. Behavioral bioassays and morphological study of these setae revealed that only the dorsal and middle (= lateral) pairs of claw sensilla are mechanogustatory, while the ventral pair are strictly mechanoreceptors. The dorsal and …

Book Review: Aquatic Insect Ecology: 1. Biology And Habitat By J. V. Ward, Ross H. Arnett Jr.
Insecta Mundi
A comprehensive treatment of the ecology of aquatic insects in one place is needed for both students and researchers. Professor Ward is doing this in two volumes. The first volume covers the biology and habitats, as indicated in the subtitle, of the 13 insect orders that are either entirely aquatic at some stage, or those with some members aquatic at some stage. The second volume will be devoted entirely to the feeding ecology of these aquatic species.

Males of Neohermes concolor (Davis) from the interior highlands of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, and from Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky exhibited considerable variation in male terminalia. Differences occurred in the size of the dorsal membrane of the ninth sternite and in the shape of the tenth tergite (anal plate) which varied from rounded to truncate-shaped. This observed variation does not appear to be geographically correlated. Females of N. concolor did not exhibit broad variation in terminalii. Little variation was observed among males of N. angusticollis (Hagen) and N. matheri Flint. The broad range of variation observed in the tenninalia of …
