All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Extracts of steam distillates of the desert shrub Commiphora quadricincta were tested for their effects on the maturation of gregarious immature males and females of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. Maturation was significantly faster in immature adults exposed to the extract obtained before winter rains than in those exposed to the extract obtained after the rains, with respect to locust colour changes (yellowing of body), mating activity, aggregation-maturation pheromone titres (as measured by phenylacetonitrile levels in males), ovulation (as determined by the length of oocytes in females) and oviposition time. A large number of the compounds in the crude extracts …

Identification Of Components Of The Oviposition Aggregation Pheromone Of The Gregarious Desert Locust, Schistocerca Gregaria (Forskal), M. M. Rai, A. Hassanali, R. K. Saini, H. Odongo, H. Kahoro

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Acetophenone and veratrole have been identified as two major behaviourally active components of the oviposition aggregation pheromone of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria. These compounds were identified from the volatiles of egg pod froth using gas chromatography-electroantennographic (GC-EAD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis. Both compounds were shown to elicit aggregation of gravid females in oviposition bioassays; however, they do not act synergistically. Both acetophenone and veratrole individually at optimum doses induced about 70% egg laying, a value similar to that evoked with froth volatiles.

Book Review: An Inordinate Fondness For Beetles (Evans, A.V. And C.L. Bellamy), Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

This nicely produced book is a visual celebration of beetles. Consider that it has 140 color photographs on 98 color plates . . . and 26 of those plates are of scarabs. Excellent! One should not construe my possible bias (or perhaps even that of the first author) as too narrow in its focus because the breadth of coverage of this volume is truly beetlewide.

In the Prologue, the authors briefly review the timeless fascination that humans have had with beetles. They note that most people are not aware of the diversity of beetles and are not impressed by such …

A local isolate of Bacillus thuringiensis, designated L1-2, that is toxic to Chilo partellus was found to be toxic to the adult tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans morsitans. The δ-endotoxin crystals derived from the isolate gave a major protein band with a molecular weight of M(r) 130,000- 140,000 on denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The sequence of the cloned gene was found to be similar to that of the B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-73 cryIA(c) gene, having one amino acid difference at position 148 and four additional DNA differences.

Analysis Of Gene Expression During Embryonic Development In Mulberry Silkworm Bombyx Mori, Amit Singh, K. P. Gopinathan

Biology Faculty Publications

We have developed a method for dechorionation and devitellinization of the silkworm eggs without damage, to facilitate the analysis of gene expression during embryonic development of Bombyx mori. Making use of antibodies available from heterologous systems, the spatio-temporal expression patterns of peroxidase and proliferating cell nuclear antigen have been directly visualized in whole mount embryos at various stages of development without the need for generating transformed ·lines carrying specific reporter constructs. The B. mori system, previously unamenable for such studies, could thus serve as an attractive model for molecular analysis of insect development.

Winter Activity Patterns Of American Martens (Martes Americana): Rejection Of The Hypothesis Of Thermal-Cost Minimization, Gary S. Drew, John A. Bissonette Jan 1997

Winter Activity Patterns Of American Martens (Martes Americana): Rejection Of The Hypothesis Of Thermal-Cost Minimization, Gary S. Drew, John A. Bissonette

Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah

Despite their temperate to subarctic geographic range, American martens (Martes americana) possess a thermally inefficient morphology. The lack of morphological adaptations for reducing thermal costs suggests that marten may use behavioral strategies to optimize thermal budgets. During the winters of 1989-1990 and 1990-1991, we radio-collared and monitored the diel activity of 7 martens. A log-linear model suggested that the presence or absence of light was the only factor associated with marten activity patterns (p < 0.001). A regression of the percentage of active fixes on ambient temperature failed to detect an association (b = -4.45, p = 0.084, n = 12). Contents of marten seats suggested that their activity was consistent with the prey-vulnerability hypothesis. While martens must balance multiple life requisites, their activity patterns suggest that they accept increased thermal costs in order to increase foraging efficiency. However, the nocturnal activity of martens during winter was also consistent with the hypothesis that they may be able to limit their own exposure to predation risk. The nocturnal habits of Newfoundland martens in the winter were consistent with the hypothesis of avoidance of predation risk.

Oviposition Pheromone In The Simulium Damnosum Complex: Biological Activity Of Chemical Fractions From Gravid Ovaries, P. J. Mccall, R. R. Heath, B. D. Dueben, M. D. Wilson

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Communal oviposition in the Afrotropical blackfly species complex Simulium damnosum Theobald (Diptera: Simuliidae) is mediated by a pheromone emitted by freshly laid eggs. Previously, two compounds (designated peaks A and B) emanating from fresh eggs were shown to be associated with attractiveness to gravid blackflies in bioassay. The present study investigated the role of these compounds by testing the responses of wild-caught Simulium yahense in Ghana to fractionated hexane extracts of gravid ovaries prepared by gas chromatography (GC). Although the fractions were prepared from Sierra Leonean Simulium teonense, GC analysis of the emissions from fresh S. yahense eggs showed …

Control Of Solenopsis Invicta With Teflubenzuron, D. F. Williams, W. A. Banks, C. S. Lofgren

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Teflubenzuron baits were active against laboratory colonies of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. Worker brood production ceased soon after treatment and by four weeks posttreatment, most colonies were devoid of brood. Worker ants did not exhibit any direct effects from treatment with teflubenzuron. As is typical with most insect growth regulators, colony mortality was slow and dependent on old- age attrition of the worker ants. A few (<25) female alates were produced in one of the laboratory colonies at 12 weeks posttreatment.

Diel Activity Patterns And Host Preferences Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) Along The Shores Of Lake Victoria, Kenya, M. M. Mohamed-Ahmed, A. Odulaja

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Diurnal activity patterns and host preference of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead were studied in forest and linear habitats along Lake Victoria shore, Kenya. The objective was to identify the preferred hosts of G. f. fuscipes, the emanations of which may be attractive to this species. Hourly catches of flies in biconical traps were related to changes in the weather and the prevalence of hosts in the vicinity of traps. Flies were mainly active between 0800 and 1600 h, with males peaking around 1100 h and females around 1300 h. Activity of flies correlated directly with light intensity and temperature, but …
