Fipronil Metabolism, Oxidative Sulfone Formation And Toxicity Among Organophosphate- And Carbamate-Resistant And Susceptible Western Corn Rootworm Populations , Michael E. Scharf, Blair D. Siegfried, Lance J. Meinke, Laurence D. Chandler
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Fipronil toxicity and metabolism were studied in two insecticide-resistant, and one susceptible western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, LeConte) populations. Toxicity was evaluated by exposure to surface residues and by topical application. Surface residue bioassays indicated no differences in fipronil susceptibility among the three populations. Topical bioassays were used to study the relative toxicity of fipronil, fipronil. the mono-oxygenase inhibitor piperonyl butoxide, and fipronil's oxidative sulfone metabolite in two populations (one resistant with elevated mono-oxygenase activity). Fipronil and fipronil-sulfone exhibited similar toxicity and application of piperonyl butoxide prior to fipronil resulted in marginal effects on toxicity. Metabolism of …

Baseline Susceptibility Of The Corn Earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To The Cry1ab Toxin From Bacillus Thuringiensis, Blair D. Siegfried, Terrence A. Spencer, Jessica Nearman
Baseline Susceptibility Of The Corn Earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To The Cry1ab Toxin From Bacillus Thuringiensis, Blair D. Siegfried, Terrence A. Spencer, Jessica Nearman
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Susceptibility to Cry1Ab toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) was determined for 12 field populations of neonate corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), from the United States. Earworm larvae were exposed to artificial diet treated with increasing Bt concentrations, and mortality and growth inhibition were evaluated after 7 d. The range of variation in Bt susceptibility indicated by growth inhibition was very similar to that indicated by mortality. Although interpopulation variation in susceptibility to both proteins was observed, the magnitude of the differences was small (less than or equal to fivefold). These results suggest that the observed susceptibility differences reflect natural variation …

Direct Determination Of The Kinetics Of Oxygen Diffusion To The Photocytes Of A Bioluminescent Elaterid Larva, Measurement Of Gas- And Aqueous-Phase Diffusional Barriers And Modelling Of Oxygen Supply, G. S. Timmins, E. J. Bechara, H. M. Swartz
Dartmouth Scholarship
We describe the development and use of a direct kinetic technique to determine the time taken for oxygen to diffuse from the external environment into the light-producing cells (photocytes) in the prothorax of bioluminescent larvae of Pyrearinus termitilluminans. This was achieved by measuring the time course of the pseudoflash induced through sequential anoxia followed by normoxia. We have also determined the separate times taken for this oxygen diffusion in gaseous and tissue (predominantly aqueous) phases by using helium and nitrogen as the carrier gas. Of the total time taken for diffusion, that in the gas phase required 613+/-136 ms (mean …

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
Poanes aaroni bordeloni is described from Jefferson County, Texas, United States. This taxon is part of a lepidopteran community endemic to the west central area of the United States Gulf Coast between Mobile Bay, Alabama and Galveston Bay, Texas. As such, bordeloni is defined taxonomically by its evolutionary development as much as by its facies. Bordeloni is the largest aaroni subspecies. Bordeloni males are marked much like those of P. a. howardi both dorsally and ventrally. Bordeloni females usually have the fulvous spotting on the dorsal forewings reduced as in P. a. minimus females while …

Effects Of Fertilizer And Herbicide Application On Nantucket Pine Tip Moth Infestation (Lep., Tortricidae), David L. Kulhavy
Faculty Publications
A study of fertilizer and herbicide e}ects on Nantucket pine tip moth (NPTM), Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock) infestations was conducted in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L) plantations in Nacogdoches Co. Texas from 0877 to 0878. Both fertilizer and herbicide applications had effects on NPTM infestation level, pupal weight and host tree oleoresin production. Nitrogen fertilization increased infestation levels, whereas, phosphorus applications tends to decrease infestation rate. Herbicide treatment had a negative effect on NPTM infestations possibly because of decreased moisture stress and increased tree vigour. This is in contrast to general observations of increased NPTM infestations associated with reducing competing …

The haemolymph JH III titres in solitarious and gregarious adult desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, were examined in relation to corpus allatum (CA) volumes, aggregation-maturation pheromone production in males and oocyte growth in females. The JH titres of gregarious females were generally higher than those of solitarious females at all ages studied. The titre patterns, however, were similar: relatively high on day 10, dropping to low levels between days 20 and 25, before rising again by day 25. In the solitarious males, the JH titre was very low on day 10 after fledging, but increased gradually and reached a maximal amount …

Development Of Diagnostic Concentrations For Monitoring Bacillus Thuringiensis Resistance In European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Paula C.R.G. Marcon, Blair D. Siegfried, Terrence A. Spencer, W. D. Hutchinson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Two candidate diagnostic concentrations of the Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis corresponding to the LC99 and EC99 (effective concentration that causes 99% growth inhibition) for European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner), were determined based on previously obtained baseline data. Validation experiments using field-collected European corn borer populations from across North America showed that for Cry1Ab, a concentration corresponding to the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval of the LC99, produced mortality .99% for all populations tested. However, for Cry1Ac, adjustments and further validation are probably necessary. Development of B. thuringiensis resistance monitoring programs …

However, little is known of the role of these carcasses in other containers, which also receive leaf fall and stemflow inputs. This experiment investigated effects of accumulated invertebrate carcasses as a resource for two competing mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Aedes aegypti (L.) whether either species differentially benefited from accumulated carcasses, and if such a benefit affected interspecific competition. First, we measured accumulation of invertebrate carcasses in standard containers at a field site. We then used a replacement series with five different species ratios at the same total density: and varied the input of invertebrate carcasses [dead Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) …
