New Species And Records Of Rhyssa And Rhyssella (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Rhyssinae) From Florida And Central America, Charles C. Porter

Insecta Mundi

Abstract: Rhyssa neotropicae n. sp. is the first Rhyssa to be recorded from the New World tropics, where it was collected in cloud forest at 1800 m on Monte Uyuca near Zamorano, Honduras. It is closely related to the Nearctic R. hoferi Rohwer and R. howdenorurn Townes but differs from all other Rhyssa by its complexly yellow and black marked head and body, whose color pattern mimics that of aggressive social vespid wasps (Agelaia) which occur in the same habitat. Rhyssa howdenorurn Townes is recorded for the first time from Florida and Oklahoma. The genus Rhyssella, previously …

Small Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera: Leiodidae: Cholevinae) From Burrows Of Geomys And Thomomys Pocket Gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) In The United States, Stewart B. Peck, Paul E. Skelley

Insecta Mundi

The cholevine beetles inhabiting burrows of Geomys and Thomomys pocket gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) are reviewed. Catops geomysi n. sp. and Ptomaphagus geomysi n. sp. are described. Both of these species and Ptomaphagus schwarzi Hatch appear to be regular and obligate inhabitants of Geomys burrows but are not host specific. Nemadus hornii Hatch, Sciodrepoides ruatsoni hornianus (Blanchard), Catops simplex Say, Ptomaphagus cavernicola Schwarz, Ptomaphagus consobrinus (LeConte), Ptomaphagus fisus Horn, and Ptomaphagus texanus Horn were less frequently collected and are probably facultative inhabitants of Geomys burrows, as well as nests or dens of other small mammals. Ptomaphagus nevadicus Horn is an inhabitant …

Precipitation And Temperature Effects On Populations Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae): Implications For Range Expansion, B W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano Sep 2001

Precipitation And Temperature Effects On Populations Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae): Implications For Range Expansion, B W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

We investigated how temperature and precipitation regime encountered over the life cycle of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) affects populations. Caged populations of A. albopictus were maintained at 22, 26, and 30 degreesC. Cages were equipped with containers that served as sites for oviposition and larval development. All cages were assigned to one of three simulated precipitation regimes: (1) low fluctuation regime - water within the containers was allowed to evaporate to 90% of its maximum before being refilled, (2) high fluctuation regime - water was allowed to evaporate to 25% of its maximum before being refilled, and (3) drying regime - …

Eicosanoids Act In Nodulation Reactions To Bacterial Infections In Newly Emerged Adult Honey Bees, Apis Mellifera, But Not In Older Foragers, Jon C. Bedick, Hasan Tunaz, A. R. Nor Aliza, Sean Putnam, Marion D. Ellis, David W. Stanley Sep 2001

Eicosanoids Act In Nodulation Reactions To Bacterial Infections In Newly Emerged Adult Honey Bees, Apis Mellifera, But Not In Older Foragers, Jon C. Bedick, Hasan Tunaz, A. R. Nor Aliza, Sean Putnam, Marion D. Ellis, David W. Stanley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Nodulation is the first, and qualitatively predominant, cellular defense reaction to bacterial infections in insects. We tested the hypothesis that eicosanoids also mediate nodulation reactions to bacterial challenge in adults of a social insect, the honey bee, Apis mellifera. Treating newly-emerged experimental bees with the eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitor, dexamethasone, impaired nodulation reactions to bacterial infections, and the influence of dexamethasone was reversed by treating infected insects with arachidonic acid, an eicosanoid precursor. Several other eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors, including the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, indomethacin, and the dual cyclooxygenase/lipoxygenase inhibitor, phenidone, also impaired the ability of experimental honeybees to form nodules in …

Mesoplatys ochroptera Stål (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a serious pest of the tropical legume sesbania (Sesbania sesban (L.) Merrill) widely used for soil fertility improvement in southern Africa. Surveys were conducted between October 1997 and June 1999 in order to identify the predators of M. ochroptera in sesbania fallows in eastern Zambia. The Heteroptera Afrius yolofa (Guérin-Méneville), Glypsus conspicuus (Westwood), Macrorhaphis acuta Dallas, Mecosoma mensor (Germar), Rhinocoris segmentarius (Germar), and Deraeocoris ostentans (Stål), the carabid beetle Cyaneodinodes fasciger (Chaudoir), the ants Tetramorium sericeiventre Emery and Pheidole sp., and the lacewing Mallada sp. were recorded as predators of M. ochroptera for the …

The Nature Of The Gregarizing Signal Responsible For Maternal Transfer Of Phase To The Offspring In The Desert Locust Schistocerca Gregaria, Atem G. Malual, Ahmed Hassanali, Baldwyn Torto, Yousif O.H. Assad, Peter G.N. Njagi Aug 2001

Njagi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

We examined aggregative behavior of hatchlings of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria emerging from solitaria egg pods that had been incubated in sand previously used for consecutive ovipositions by gregarious females. Hatchlings derived from such eggs were significantly more gregarious than those derived from pods laid in clean sand. The gregarizing effect of the sand-associated factor originating from 3, 5, or 10 ovipositions by gregarious females increased in a dose-dependent fashion. Washing the sand with organic solvents following such ovipositions, or flushing it with nitrogen gas, led to substantial loss of its gregarizing effect, showing that the active signal is …

An Examination Of Southeastern U. S. Satyrium (Lycaenidae: Theclinae), Part Two: The Identification And Delimitation Of Nominate Satyrium Liparops And The Description Of A New Subspecies From West Central Peninsular Florida, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The name Satyrium liparops liparops has traditionally been applied to all liparops populations from eastern Georgia southward. This tradition is shown to be in error. The type locality of nominate liparops is restricted by original description to Screven County, Georgia. A neotype is designated from Screven County and deposited in the Museum of the Hemispheres (MOTH) collection Goose Creek, South Carolina. The range of nominate liparops is projected to be from coastal South Carolina across the far southern United States (including the Florida panhandle) and into Texas. The population in west central peninsular Florida is described as new subspecies S …

Temperature Effects On The Dynamics Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae) Populations In The Laboratory, Barry W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano Jul 2001

Temperature Effects On The Dynamics Of Aedes Albopictus (Diptera : Culicidae) Populations In The Laboratory, Barry W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

We investigated how constant temperatures of 22, 24, and 26 degreesC experienced across the full life cycle affected the dynamics of caged populations of Aedes albopictus (Skuse). All cages were equipped with plastic beakers that served as sites for oviposition and larval development. We measured the per capita daily mortality and emergence rates of the adults and size of adult females, and estimated the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and asymptotic density (K) for each adult population. populations at 26 degreesC had greater intrinsic rates of increase and lower asymptotic densities than populations at 22 and 24 degreesC. Populations at …

An Examination Of Southeastern U.S. Satyrium (Lycaenidae: Theclinae), Part One: An Obscure New Subspecies Of Satyrium Edwardsii, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Satyrium edwardsii meridionale is described as a new subspecies from Aiken County, South Carolina, United States. This scarce colony is the southeasternmost known population of this butterfly in the United States. It was discovered by the author (Ronald R. Gatrelle) in 1990 near Aiken State Park in Aiken County, South Carolina. This site is in South Carolina’s upper Coastal Plain in the southern part of the state adjacent to Georgia. It is known from only one male and one female at the type locality. Because it was known from only one pair, the author thought it best to wait until …

Color Forms Of Monocesta Coryli (Say) In West Virginia (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Shawn M. Clark

Insecta Mundi

Monocesta coryli (Say) is rather widespread in the eastern United States. In life, the beetles are usually bright yellow with the basal and apical thirds of the elytra metallic blue. In pinned specimens, the yellow areas fade to pale tan. A number of years ago (Clark, 1986), I reported on an unusual color form that occurs in southern Ohio, the dark elytral markings being either entirely absent or very poorly developed. More recently (Clark, 2000), I stated that both forms occur in West Virginia, but I gave very little information regarding the distribution of each.
