Differences In Emergence Date And Size Between The Sexes Of Malacosoma Americanum The Eastern Tent Caterpillar (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), Donald N. Bieman, J. A. Witter
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Malacosoma americanum males were smaller and began to pupate earlier than females. Since the sexes spent the same amount of time as pupae, males also emerged earlier. The adaptive significance of these results is discussed. Emergence data revealed an interesting sidelight; no moths emerged from cocoons inside tents.

Fourlined Plant Bug (Hemiptera: Miridae), A Reappraisal: Life History, Host Plants, And Plant Response To Feeding, A. G. Wheeler Jr, Gary L. Miller
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Phenology of the fourlined plant bug, Poecilocapsus lineatus, is presented for southcen- tral Pennsylvania; life history and habits are re-examined. Although breeding was previously thought to occur only on woody plants, we found that nymphs develop on numerous herbs. An extensive list of hosts, more than 250 species in 57 families, is compiled from the literature and the authors' observations; preferences are noted for plants in the Labiatae, Solanaceae, and Compositae. Damage consists of lesions on foliage, the size and shape of the spots varying with leaf texture, pubescence, and venation. Plant response to feeding is immediately visible, the lesions …

Social Parasitism Among Ants At The E.S. George Reserve In Southern Michigan, Mary Talbot
Social Parasitism Among Ants At The E.S. George Reserve In Southern Michigan, Mary Talbot
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
A mode of life in which one species spends all or part of its existence in close contact with, and at the expense of, another species is rather common among ants. Sudd (1%7) stated that about one sixth of all known European species are parasitic to some extent. At the Edwin S. George Reserve in Livingston County, Michigan, 28.7% (25 of the 87 species) fall into the category of forms considered to be in some way parasitic on other ants.

Persistence Of Jack Pine Budworm Choristoneura Pinus Pinus, (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Egg Mass Chorions On Jack Pine Foliage, Harold O. Batzer, Daniel T. Jennings
The Great Lakes Entomologist
More than one-fifth of old and nearly one-half of new jack pine budworm egg mass chorions remained on the foliage after one year, and an experienced observer could not determine accurately the age of one-fourth of them. Counts of new egg masses are used to estimate current populations, and large errors could result.
Effects Of Various Photoperiods On Color And Pubescence In Thyanta Pallidovirens Accerra (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), J. E. Mcpherson
Effects Of Various Photoperiods On Color And Pubescence In Thyanta Pallidovirens Accerra (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), J. E. Mcpherson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The effects of a range of developmental photoperiods on adult dimorphism in Thyanta pallidovirens accerra were studied under laboratory conditions. Adults reared in photo- phases of 14L and higher had short pubescence and those in 12L and lower, long pu- bescence. No dimorphism in color was produced in these same photophases.
Effects Of Continuous And Split Developmental Photophases During Each 24 Hour Period On Adult Morphology In Euschistus Tristigmus Tristigmus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), J. E. Mcpherson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Rearing immatures of Euschistus tristigmus tristigmus in 8L:16D, 8L: 4D:8L;4D, and 16L:8D showed that the length of each photophase, rather than an accumulated total of shorter photophases, during each 24 hr period was the determining factor in producing adult dimorphism in shoulder shape and number of midventral abdominal spots.

Evaluation Of Two Systems Used To Extract Alfalfa Weevil Larvae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) From Alfalfa Samples, S. J. Roberts, D. P. Bartell, E. J. Armbrust
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A modified Berlese funnel system was developed to extract alfalfa weevil larvae (Hypera postica) from quadrats 30.5 cm on a side. Data from this system were comp.wed with simultaneous data from a hand sorting extraction system. In most instances, the modified Berlese system was as efficient as the hand sorting method and the number of man hours required to process samples by hand was far greater than that required by the Berlese system.

Effect On Constant Versus Fluctuating Temperature Regimes On Bathyplectes Curculionis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) Activity, Robert J. Barney, E. J. Armbrust, R. D. Pausch, S. J. Roberts
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Individual female Bathyplectes curculionis parasites were exposed to either a series of constant or fluctuating temperature regimes and supplied with a new group of host Hypera postica larvae every day. The fluctuating temperatures were calculated from an average of weekly air temperatures during a period of actual field oviposition by the parasite. The rearing of adult parasites under a constant versus fluctuating temperature regime resulted in no significant difference in parasitism, longevity, or fecundity. The threshold for B. curculionis activity was estimated to be 6-8°C.
Biology Of The Hyperparasitic Wasp Perilampus Similis (Hymenoptera: Perilampidae), Foster Forbes Purrington
Biology Of The Hyperparasitic Wasp Perilampus Similis (Hymenoptera: Perilampidae), Foster Forbes Purrington
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Planidia of the hyperparasitic wasp, Perilarnpris similis Crawford, enter their braconid host, Agathis rnetzneriae Muesebeck, during that host's active growth phase, returning to the outer surface when the host is prepupal. Second instar perilampids search for and destroy conspecific larvae on the surface of the braconid prepupae, thus eliminating super- parasitism. Planidia in primary hosts, Metzneria lappella Zeller moth larvae in burdock seeds, unparasitized by the braconid persist without further development through pupation and occur in various tissues of the adult moth.
Effects Of Salmon Spawning Activity On Macroinvertebrates In A Small Michigan Stream, Douglas L. Denison, Peter G. Meier
Effects Of Salmon Spawning Activity On Macroinvertebrates In A Small Michigan Stream, Douglas L. Denison, Peter G. Meier
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Density and composition of macroinvertebrate populations were examined prior to and during the migration and spawning of coho and chinook salmon in a small stream in Michigan. Data gathered from bottom samples indicated that disruption of substrate in the experimental area resulted in a significant decrease in the numbers and species of the macroinvertebrate community. This reduction of invertebrates can create a severe stress on native trout populations.

Additions To The Checklist Of The Illinois Spiders, J. A. Beatty, J. M. Nelson
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Five families and 140 species of spiders not included in former Illinois checklists are recorded. Two of these families, Antrodiaetidae and Scytodidae, and 40 of the species have been cited in earlier revisionary or other literature. The families Oonopidae, Symphytognathidae (slat.) and Ctenidae, and the remaining 100 species of spiders are recorded from Illinois for the first time. Locality data are given as counties only, and months of capture of mature specimens are presented. The total known spider fauna of Illinois now stands at 500 species in 27 families.

An Outbreak Of The Saddled Prominent Caterpillar, Heteocampa Guttivitta (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) On Beaver Island, Michigan, Alice Loesch, Jeffry Foran
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
In 1975 and 1976 an outbreak of the saddled prominent caterpillar, Heterocarnpa guttivitta (Walker) was observed in Beech-Maple climax forests on Beaver Island, Michigan. The adult guttivitta moths emerge in late May and early June, mate, and lay small (1 mm) eggs on the underside of leaves. One female lays about 500 of the green spheres. In 9-10 days the eggs hatch, and the larvae go through characteristic changes in form and markings through the following five instars (Allen, 1972).

Observations Of The Habits Of Lygaeus Kalmii Angustomarginatus (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) In Southern Michigan, Linda-Margaret Hunt
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Lygaeus kalmii Stal (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) is an insect found throughout the eastern United States and Canada. There is extensive taxonomic literature on this insect (Stil, 1874; Townsend, 1887; Parshey, 1919, 1923; Slater and Knopf, 1969), but very little attention has been given to the rest of its biology. This study describes the habits of kalmii populations in southern Michigan.

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Rearing immatures of Euschistus tristigmus tristigmus in a range of photoperiods showed that a threshold photoperiod is involved in the adult dimorphic response (shoulder shape and number of midventral abdominal spots) with the mean threshold probably near 14.5L:9.5D (light: dark). This threshold is consistent with the seasonal distribution of the adult morphs.

Collecting Neocurtilla Hexadactyla, The Northern Mole Cricket (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), In Iowa, J. R. Dewitt
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt)
The northern mole cricket, Neocurtilla hexadactyla (Perty), is a common insect that is infrequently collected perhaps owing to its burrowing and nocturnal habits. It tunnels into moist soil and feeds on tender roots, earthworms, or various insect larvae (Blatchley, 1920).
