Bulletin No. 87 - The Codling Moth, E. D. Ball Mar 1904

Bulletin No. 87 - The Codling Moth, E. D. Ball

UAES Bulletins

The codling moth has been in the State of Utah for over twenty-five years and is now injuriously abundant in every apple-growing section. It is by far the worst pest with which the fruit grower has to contend. In fact, it usually does more damage than all the other fruit insects put together.

It occurs throughout every apple-growing region of the United States, and is found in almost every country where the apple is grown, destroying from one-fourth to three-fourths of the apple crop where no effort is made to check its ravages. Dr. Howard the United States Entomologist, recently …

Descriptions Of New Genera And Species Of Hymenoptera From The Phillipine Islands, William H. Ashmead

An

In a paper entitled A List of the Hymenoptera of the Phillipine Islands, with descriptions of New Species, I recorded 183 species of these insects from the Phillipines, although several doubtful species mentioned by Fr. Castro de Elera in his Catalogo de todo la Fauna Fillipinas were cited but not included in this number. Two genera and thirty-one species were described as new to science in this first paper.

A List Of The Hymenoptera Of The Phillipine Islands, With Descriptions Of New Species, William H. Ashmead

An

Considering the extent of the Philippine Islands, extending as they do over 1,200 miles of territory, our knowledge of the Hymenopterous fauna is singularly meager. More attention should be given to collecting these important insects. Since the islands came into the possession of the United States much material has been sent to the National Museum, and with the hope that more attention will be given to the collecting and study of this order in the Philippines, I give be-low a list of the known species, and describe most of the new species now in our collection.

A New Bee In The Genus Diphaglossa, J. C. Crawford Jr.

Co

Spinola in 1851 described and figured Diphaglossa Gayi as a new species and new genus closely related to Anthophora. It was founded on males and females collected in northern Chili, "Santa Rosa , Coquimbo, etc." He figures the insect (natural size), face view of head and mouth-parts, wing, antennae and leg.

Prosopis variegata F. var. integra n. v. 9 o.

= Prosopis F. Und Die Prosopis-Sammlung Forsters, J. D. Alfken

A

The following paper on the Hymenoptera of Alaska, by William Harris Ashmead, Assistant Curator, Division of Insects, U. S. National Museum, was originally published in the Proceedings of the Washington Academy of Sciences, vol. IV, pp. 117-274, May 29, 1902. It is here reprinted from the same electrotype plates, so that it may be quoted exactly as if it were the original. This tribe, to the initiated, is readily distinguished by the eyes, which are usually quite differently shaped, rarely smooth and shining, and always distinctly facetted, although a few females have small ellipsoidal or somewhat rounded eyes, as in the tribes Photopsidini and Sphaerophthalmini, and therefore, if the greatest care is not given to other characters, could be confused with certain genera in those tribes.
