A Synopsis Of The Sphecoidea Of Nebraska (Hymenoptera), Clarence E. Mickel Oct 1917

A Synopsis Of The Sphecoidea Of Nebraska (Hymenoptera), Clarence E. Mickel

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The following paper is the result of three years more or less intermittent study and collecting of the entomophilous wasps of the superfamily Sphecoidea. In 1908, Mr. H. S. Smith published a list of Nebraska Sphecoidea together with synoptic tables, descriptions of new species and notes. The University of N ebraska collection of this group has more than doubled in size since 1908, the collection of Nebraska specimens now numbering about 7,000, while the entire collection of Sphecoidea includes between 8,000 and 9,000 specimens. This wealth of material has naturally increased the number of species known to occur within the …

The Production Of Alfalfa Seed In Southern Idaho, L. C. Aicher Jul 1917

The Production Of Alfalfa Seed In Southern Idaho, L. C. Aicher

A

The acreage given over to the production of alfalfa seed is rapidly increasing in Idaho because of the widespread interest throughout the east in growing alfalfa as a forage crop, the growing demand of eastern farmers for high-grade seed, and the higher prices obtainable since the beginning of the world war. In growing alfalfa farmers have discovered thru experience and heavy losses at times that it is more profitable to plant high-grade than inferior seed. In response to the demands of their customers and because of stringent weed laws of some states, seedsman are becoming more and more particular in …

Color And Color-Pattern Mechanism Of Tiger Beetles, Victor E. Shelford Jun 1917

Color And Color-Pattern Mechanism Of Tiger Beetles, Victor E. Shelford

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

In 1903 the writer undertook a study of variation of the tiger beetles. The work here presented is the outgrowth of this beginning, and indeed includes some small portions regarding color patterns that were written in that year. The work has been prolonged for many reasons, but chief of these was the very large number of species in the group and the fact that an adequate understanding of the material could not be attained without consulting many large collections. Further, the experimental results obtained in 1906 demanded a firsthand study of the variations of the species concerned and their natural …

Spraying Experiments In Nebraska, J. Ralph Cooper Apr 1917

Spraying Experiments In Nebraska, J. Ralph Cooper

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The more important questions which were considered during the three years covered by the present report were as follows: 1. How many summer sprays are required and when should they be applied? 2. What is the difference in efficiency between various brands of arsenate of lead? 3. What are the relative values of lime sulphur and Bordeaux as fungicides for spraying apples? 4. Is it possible to lessen or prevent Bordeaux injury and at the same time control fungous diseases? 5. Is it possible to interchange Bordeaux and lime sulphur in a spray schedule in such a manner as to …

New Hymenoptera, J. C. Crawford Jan 1917

New Hymenoptera, J. C. Crawford

Co

Professor Cockerell has recently (Psyche, XXIII, 176- 178, 1916) published on the synonymy of this group, and at present it seems best to treat Zacesta and Panurgomyia as synomyms of this genus. Z. rufipes is very similar to the genotype of Hesperapis and is probably the male of a very closely allied species. Panurgomyia fuchsi belongs to the group of H. eumorpha and (Panur-gus) H. regularis Cress. and is very close to regularis. The type of fuchsi is in bad condition and the identification is, therefore, somewhat' uncertain.

On The Occurance Of Vespa Austriaca Panzer In The Northeastern United States, Joseph Bequaert Dec 1916

On The Occurance Of Vespa Austriaca Panzer In The Northeastern United States, Joseph Bequaert

Ba

There are many facts in the taxonomy and still more in the life-histories of the common American wasps (Vespa) which need a thorough revision. The following small contribution is made with the hope of interesting other entomologists in the subject. During the last summer, the .writer made a point of capturing all the specimens of wasps he met with on his collecting trips, but the result as a whole was very poor, 1916 apparently not being a wasp-year. However, amongst the catch were found two females which he was unable to refer to any of the species previously known from …
