8. The South And Central African Species Of The Genus Synagris Latreille (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert Jan 1923

8. The South And Central African Species Of The Genus Synagris Latreille (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert

Ba

This is the first of a series of articles in which I shall deal with the diplopterous wasps of South and Central Africa, south of 10° S. lat. The area under consideration includes the south-eastern portion of the Belgian Congo, or the Katanga district, which in its fauna and flora has many points in common with Northern Rhodesia, and differs considerably from the equatorial Congo belt. Since for lack of material the wasps of the Katanga could not be fully treated before, the present paper will supplement my Revision of Congo Vespidae (1918).

Enkele Beschouwingen Over Kleuren En Kleurgroepen Bij Plooivleugelige Wespen, (1), Joseph Bequaert

Ba

Bulletin 106 - The Red-Legged Velvet Earth Mite, L. J. Newman Jan 1923

Bulletin 106 - The Red-Legged Velvet Earth Mite, L. J. Newman

Bulletins 1 - 2999

This pest is sometimes called in error the "Red Spider" or the 'Earth Flea."

It is neither a spider nor a flea, being a species of mite.

It belongs to the family of mites known as the Eupodidae and to the Genus Notophallus. Many of the members of this family are predaceous, that is, they live upon other insects or animals, but the species we are dealing with appears to be wholly a plant feeder. A popular idea is that the mite lives and breeds in the earth. The rapidity with which newly planted vegetables become infested gives good excuse …

Insect Pests Of Stored Grains And Their Control, M. H. Swenk Dec 1922

Insect Pests Of Stored Grains And Their Control, M. H. Swenk

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In Nebraska there are about 20 species of insects that injure stored grain more or less. Some are beetles and their larvae, others are the caterpillars of small moths. To the farmer all are "weevil," although that name is really properly applied only to two beetle species-the granary weevil and the rice weevil. The following paragraphs and illustrations will describe the several more important stored grain pests to be found in this State, so that the farmer may recognize the particular pest or pests that are doing the injury to his grain, and may then apply the proper remedy.

Iii. The Predaceous Enemies Of Ants, Joseph Bequaert

Ba

The various means by which Nature prevents an excessive increase of the species not only forms in itself an interesting chapter of ecology, but its study is also of great importance in an understanding of the true meaning of Natural Selection. In the case of ants it has been contended that they are better defended than other insects against the attacks of predatory animals. Poulton evidently takes this for granted when he considers that ants, together with wasps, are among the favorite models for "mimicking" insects and other arthropods. These ant-like arthropods, having acquired by Natural Selection their resemblance "to …

A Synopsis Of The Scarabaeidae Of Nebraska (Coleoptera), R. W. Dawson Jul 1922

A Synopsis Of The Scarabaeidae Of Nebraska (Coleoptera), R. W. Dawson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Several years ago the writer undertook a study of the "June-bug" family (Scarabaeidae) for the state of Nebraska. The object of the study was two fold: First to determine the number and status of our species in this large and economically important family, and second to present a taxonomic review which would enable the beginning student, or interested amateur, to readily name with reasonable certainty any species which he might encounter in the state.

In the following pages 40 genera and 162 species are tabulated, and notes given on the abundance, seasonal and geographical distribution of the species within the …

A Synopsis Of The Syrphidae Of Nebraska With Descriptions Of New Species From Nebraska And Colorado, Everett E. Wehr Jul 1922

A Synopsis Of The Syrphidae Of Nebraska With Descriptions Of New Species From Nebraska And Colorado, Everett E. Wehr

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

In June, 1907, Mr. Paul R. Jones published in the Journal of the New York Entomological Society "A Preliminary List of Nebraska Syrphidae with Descriptions of New Species.'" At that time there was available only a comparatively small collection of Syrphid flies, but apparently it contained a fairly good representation of the species found in the state. Subsequent collectors have contributed a considerable amount of new material from the state in which there are twelve additional species, two of which are· new. With these additions, the Nebraska list is increased to ninety species.

At the present time the classification of …

On Eumenes Alluaudi Perez, A Precinctive Wasp Of The Seychelles (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert Dec 1921

On Eumenes Alluaudi Perez, A Precinctive Wasp Of The Seychelles (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert

Ba

In my Catalogue of Ethiopian Diplopterous Wasps, published in 1918, I have attempted to correlate the various described forms of African Eumenes. In many cases, where specimens were not available for study, my conclusions were based on such inferences as could be made from published accounts, and were therefore only tentative. Eumenes alluaudi J. Perez,2 for instance, I regarded at the time as one of the color variants of Eumenes lepeleterii Saussure, to which it was said to be related by the author of the species. Through the courtesy of Mr. A. S. Rohwer, I recently had opportunity to examine …

Wie Ist Tiphia Rufiventris Pz. Zu Deuten?, J. D. Alfken

A
