Soil Rotifers New To Hungary From The Gemenc Floodplain (Duna-Dráva National Park, Hungary), Károly Schöll, Miloslav Devetter
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In summer and autumn 2010, we collected soil samples from the Gemenc floodplain of the Danube (Duna-Dráva National Park) from places with different flood regimes and vegetation cover and examined them for rotifers. We found a total of 31 species; 14 of them are new to the Hungarian fauna. The Hungarian occurrence of 8 further species is confirmed based on their first detailed data from the country. The genus Wierzejskiella Wiszniewski, 1934 is also new for Hungary. This study provides additional support to the conclusion that floodplains of large rivers have a diverse and sensitive biota.
Terrestrial Bdelloid Rotifers From Erzurum (Eastern Part Of Turkey), Murat Kaya
Terrestrial Bdelloid Rotifers From Erzurum (Eastern Part Of Turkey), Murat Kaya
Turkish Journal of Zoology
There has been a growing interest in studies of the macroecology and biogeography of microorganisms (smaller than 2 mm) in recent years; however, knowledge of the diversity patterns of these organisms is inadequate. The reason for this lack of knowledge is that faunistic studies of these microorganisms have not been extensive enough to cover all areas of the world. Bdelloid rotifers of 200-600 µm in size are among these microorganisms. In many countries, few studies have been conducted on bdelloid fauna thus far. With only one detailed study, Turkey can be counted as one of those countries. In this present …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
The ubiquitin ribosome fusion gene RpS27a's coding sequence was cloned from diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). An open reading frame of 468 bp was found to encode a putative 155 amino acid precursor protein, which shares over 90% similarity with other insects' RpS27a protein. Real-time quantitative PCR was carried out to determine the relative expression level in the fourth instar larvae of deltamethrin-resistant and deltamethrin-susceptible strains. The results showed that the expression of RpS27a was significantly higher in the deltamethrin-resistant strain than in the deltamethrin-susceptible strain. There are reports indicating that upregulation expression of some ribosomal proteins confers some insecticide …

The Population Dynamics Of Two Rodents In Two Coastal Marshes In Virginia, Robert K. Rose, John A. March
Virginia Journal of Science
The communities of small mammals were evaluated for 13 months with capture-mark-recapture methods in two Spartina-Juncus marshes of the Atlantic coast in Northampton County, Virginia. Small mammals were trapped for three days each month using live traps placed on floats on two study grids. Two rodents were numerically dominant (~90% of small mammals) there: marsh rice rat, Oryzomys palustris, and meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. Monthly estimates of population density were greater for rice rats (peak: 45/ha) than for those of meadow voles (peak: 30/ha). Survival rates were generally low, especially for rice rats, indicating highly vagile populations. Both …

Detection Of Antibodies Against Parascaris Equorum Excretory-Secretory Antigens, Steffanie V. Burk
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Parascaris equorum is a nematode parasite that infects young horses, sometimes causing unthriftiness, respiratory signs, or intestinal impaction in severe cases. Infection can be diagnosed by detection of eggs in feces, but this is only possible after the worms are fully mature. The goal of this study was to develop an antibody-based test for prepatent diagnosis of P. equorum infection. To produce western blot (WB) antigen, P. equorum larvae were cultured for collection of excretory-secretory antigens (ESA). Sera from 18 pregnant broodmares, their subsequent foals, and a group of 12 older mares and geldings were analyzed. In order to check …

Cooccurrence And Food Niche Overlap Of Two Common Predators (Red Fox Vulpes Vulpes And Common Buzzard Buteo Buteo) In An Agricultural Landscape, Lukasz Jankowiak, Piotr Tryjanowski
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The mechanism of coexistence and interspecific relationships between 2 predatory species has been an important topic in ecology for many years. To date, researchers have focused mostly on very similar species, such as 2 mammals or 2 birds of prey, occupying the same habitat. However, the situation where a predatory mammal may live sympatrically with a common bird of prey is probably more common. A good example is the coexistence of the red fox and the common buzzard. The relationship between these species with respect to spatial distribution, the abundance of a potentially important prey species (common vole), diet, trophic …

The present study quantifies the concentrations of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids in the hemolymph, ovary, hepatopancreas, and muscle of Fenneropenaeus merguiensis and F. penicillatus during ovarian maturation. Proteins were the major constituent in the hemolymph and ovaries of the 2 species, while lipids were the major constituent in the hepatopancreas. The protein, carbohydrate, and lipid contents in the ovaries of both species increased as ovaries matured. The increase in the protein, carbohydrate, and lipid contents in the ovaries during maturation indicates that the ovaries utilize these constituents to mature. Concentrations of lipids in the hepatopancreas decreased with ovarian maturation in …

A checklist of metazoon parasites of Anura and Urodela in Turkey has been compiled from parasitological studies done in Turkey between 1960 and 2013. The list of parasite species is arranged by phylum and class, providing parasite name, location of the caught Anura and Urodela hosts, and date of published record. Seventy parasite species belonging to phylum Platyhelminthes (including 7 species of Monogenea, 24 species of Digenea, and 2 species of Cestoda), phylum Nemathelminthes (including 30 species of Nematoda), phylum Acanthocephala (6 species), and phylum Annelida (1 species) are listed from 24 host species, which were collected from different parts …

Fatty acid profiles of total, neutral, and polar lipids in the liver, muscle, and intestine of female individuals of Vimba vimba (L., 1758) were determined by gas chromatography. C16:0, C16:1 n-7, C18:1 n-7, and C18:1 n-9 were the most abundant fatty acids in total and neutral lipids in all tissues investigated. In addition to these acids, C20:4 n-6 (arachidonic acid) and C22:6 n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid) were the other fatty acids having high percentages in the polar lipid fraction of the tissues. The highest and lowest n-3 to n-6 ratios, which are a good indicator of the quality of fish oils, …

Little is known about the merogony of coccidians from fishes in Africa. To our knowledge, including both freshwater and marine fishes, developmental stages have been recorded for only Goussia cichlidarum, Cryptosporidium sp. parasitizing the stomachs of juvenile cichlid fish, and Eimeria (s. l.) vanasi. A survey of coccidians parasitizing marine fishes from the coast of Senegal (West Africa) was done between 1988 and 1992 and samples of infected organs were collected for further transmission electron microscopy observations. Merogonic stages were observed. Goussia senegalensis undergoes merogony in the hepatic cells of Pagellus bellottii as follows: meronts develop inside the cytoplasm of …
