Shell Size Differences In Helix Lucorum Linnaeus, 1758 (Mollusca: Gastropoda) Between Natural And Urban Environments, Levan Mumladze
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Helix lucorum Linnaeus, 1758 is a large helicid snail widespread in Georgia. While its occurrences are mainly associated with human activity, it is frequently impacted by strong direct pressure, which could cause local extinctions of populations. Instead, H. lucorum populations in anthropogenic landscapes are usually dense and apparently well adapted. Morphometric studies were carried out on 12 populations from both anthropogenic and more natural habitats in a wide range of altitudes and climatic regimes in Georgia to investigate the effects of human pressure. Populations in more anthropogenic habitats have smaller adult shells independently of any effects of climate, altitude, or …

A New Hemiscorpius Peters, 1861 (Scorpiones: Hemiscorpiidae) From Southwestern Iran, Ayşegül Karataş, Muhammed Mouradi Gharkheloo
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A new Hemiscorpius species, H. kashkayi sp. nov., is described from the Khuzestan and Ahwaz region in southwestern Iran. H. kashkayi is related to H. persicus Birula, 1903, known from Baluchestan in eastern Iran, which does not show sexual dimorphism between males and females, like H. kashkayi. These 2 species differ from all other Iranian Hemiscorpiidae species in having no sexual dimorphism. H. kashkayi is distinguished from H. persicus by its relatively short and well-developed stout metasoma and pedipalp segments, less developed patellar process, and carapacial and mesosomal carination.

Spawning Period And Fecundity Of Neolissochilus Soroides (Duncker, 1904)(Pisces, Teleostei, Cyprinidae) From A Small Malaysian Stream, Md Zain Khaironizam, Mohd Zakaria Ismail
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Spawning and fecundity aspects of a cyprinid fish, Neolissochilus soroides (Duncker, 1904), from the Gombak River of Peninsular Malaysia were studied from November 2009 to October 2010. Results show that the fish reproduced year-round, but 2 peaks of fecundity were observed, coinciding with high rainfall distribution during November and April. The gonadosomatic index for both sexes was comparatively higher in the wet seasons. The high numbers of ripening and ripe oocytes observed during the wet seasons and the oocyte diameter distribution indicate that the species is a total spawner, with batches of ripe oocytes that are released over an extended …

Nonnative species (NNS) pose one of the most common threats to the conservation of biodiversity. Given the difficulty in measuring and documenting the specific impacts of introduced species on native species, indices of condition may provide an easy and inexpensive alternative. The aim of this study was to understand the impact of NNS on some common and endemic freshwater fishes, examining their relative conditions in the absence (allopatry) and presence (sympatry) of nonnative fish species from 3 different regions in the western part of Turkey. Data from 19 sites, a total of 1672 fish of 11 cyprinid species, were used …

Microstonyx (Suidae, Artiodactyla) From The Upper Miocene Of Hayranlı-Haliminhanı, Turkey, Jan Van Der Made, Erksi̇n Güleç, Ahmet Cem Erkman
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The suid remains from localities 58-HAY-2 and 58-HAY-19 in the Late Miocene Derindere Member of the İncesu Formation in the Hayranlı-Haliminhanı area (Sivas, Turkey) are described and referred to as Microstonyx major (Gervais, 1848-1852). Microstonyx shows changes in incisor morphology, which are interpreted as a further adaptation to rooting. This occurred probably in a short period between 8.7 and 8.121 Ma ago and possibly is a reaction to environmental change. The incisor morphology in locality 58-HAY-2 suggests that it is temporally close to this change, which would imply that this locality and the lithostratigraphically lower 58-HAY-19 belong to the lower …

The Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus) is a small passerine bird occurring only in wetland habitats. Three subspecies of the Bearded Tit are known from Turkey. The endemic subspecies Panurus biarmicus kosswigi has only been recorded from Amik Lake in Turkey. This subspecies is now considered extinct; the apparent cause of this extinction was the drought affecting the lake. Other subpopulations might be similarly threatened by habitat loss. Therefore, it is important to investigate the morphometric characteristics and genetic variation of these local subpopulations. In this study, body weights and 12 morphometric characters were measured for Bearded Tit individuals in the …

Although water level fluctuations and related environmental variations occurring within reservoirs have a considerable effect on the zooplankton community, studies on zooplankton dynamics of reservoirs are very limited. In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the diurnal vertical migration of zooplankton in relation to the concentration of physicochemical factors and chlorophyll a content in a recently formed water reservoir (Tahtalı Reservoir, Kocaeli, northwestern Turkey). During the sampling period 20 zooplankton taxa were identified, which were mostly indicative of eutrophic waters, as confirmed by the physicochemical factors of the water in the reservoir. Rotifera was the most abundant group, followed …
