Presettlement Vegetation And Vegetational Change In Three Valleys In Central Utah, Earl M. Christensen, Hyrum B. Johnson

Historical information, survey records, and relict vegetation were used as sources of data for determining the nature of the presettlement vegetation of Pavant, Round, and Juab Valleys in central Utah. The foothills were covered with bunch grasses (principally Agropyron spicatum and Poa secunda), scattered junipers (Juniperus utahensis), and sagebrush (Artemisia tridentate). Western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii) was common on level areas within the foothills. Below the foothill region on the more gentle slopes and benchlands there was a broad belt dominated by bunch grasses. The grassy area intergraded into a zone dominated by northern …

Cell Mitosis During Skin Wound Healing, Frank M. Noice

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

It has been well documented that an open (incised) skin wound through the epidermis and into the underlying dermis, results in a rapid, within 24 hours, and abnormal rise in the epidermal mitotic rate. The mitotic rate may be more than ten times the normal maximum, and is highest among those cells closest to the wound edge and lowest, near the normal rate, about 1 mm. from the wound edge. The decreasing mitotic rate within 1 mm. of the wound edge holds quite constant regardless of the size of the open wound. The theoretical explanation of this situation is presented …

Nesting Habits Of The Soft-Shelled Turtles (Trionyx Sp.), Rory Neil Vose

Soft-shelled turtles (Trionyx Sp.) are common along the Mississippi River but, in spite of their abundance, the literature contains very few accounts of their life history, particularly with respect to nesting. The principal contributions concerning the ecology of Trionyx have been made by Breckenridge (1944); Cahn (193 7); Carr (1952); Ditmars (1936); and Pope (1939 and 1955).

The present study was undertaken to learn more about the nesting habits of the Trionyx turtles in the area near Winona, Minnesota. Because of the great similarity between species of Trionyx turtles, and because close observation would have disturbed their normal nesting activities, …

Populations Of Peritrichs On The Pond Snail, Physa Gyrina Say, Peter Moyle

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

There are many obscure niches in a, pond that make fascinating ecological studies. The shell of a pond snail such as Physa gyrina Say, is one of these. In this study alone, 18 species of attached animals and plants were found growing on P; gyrina shells. About half of these species occurred on the shells in large numbers and completed a large part of their life cycle there. On P. gyrina, the most abundant animals included three species of protowans and a tendipedid larva. Nest Structure And Flights Of The Ant Formica Obscuriventris Mayr, Mary Talbot

In southern Michigan the ant Formica obscuriventris Mayr constructs superficial nests under logs and piled-up leaves. Covered runways connect widely spread chambers.In 1962 one colony released approximately 3000 winged ants in 16 flight days between July 27 and August 24th. An estimated 2587 males flew, and the first nine flights were exclusively male. Females took part in six flights, but most (362 of the 422) flew on one day.The best flights occurred when bright sun warmed the ground after cold nights. Males could move out of the nest at 57 [deg]F. and could begin flying at 63 [deg]F. They flew …

Mites On Kangaroo Rats At The Nevada Test Site, Morris A. Goates

A systematic study of parasitic mites on kangaroo rats of two species at the Nevada Test Site was conducted from August 1959 to December 1961. The intent was to determine the kinds, numbers, seasonal occurrences and ecological relationships of mites in nuclear disturbed and contiguous undisturbed areas. A total of 1,256 rats from nine plant communities was examined.

The 6,208 mites collected represented 16 species including four undescribed. Fourteen were found on both kinds of rats. Considerably more rats were infested with chiggers than with mesostigmatids. Each species of mite occurred alone on its host at least 20% of the …
