This study investigated the effects of rearing systems on performance, egg quality, and ileal amino acid (AA) digestibility in laying hens (65 weeks of age). A total of 66 hens were distributed into two rearing systems: Cage (2 birds/replication, total 12 birds in 6 replications) and pasture (9 birds/replication, total 54 birds in 6 replications), and reared on three levels of energy diet (11.50 MJ/kg, 12.50 MJ/kg, and 13 MJ/kg). The wild-catch fishing industry plays a significant role in Western Australia’s economy, particularly in regional communities. This report summarises the economic contribution of the commercial wild-catch fishing sector in 2024, based on REMPLAN’s input-output (I-O) modelling methodology and DPIRD data and analysis. This report focuses on key economic indicators including total economic output, gross value added (GVA), and employment (FTEs).

This study compared gonad development between wild-sourced and hatchery-bred silver therapon Leiopotherapon plumbeus. Wild fish from the east bay area of Laguna de Bay, Philippines, and hatchery-bred stocks grown to adult size in outdoor tanks were sampled, and somatic condition, gonad histology, gonadosomatic index (GSI), gut index (GI), and hepatosomatic index (HSI) were assessed during the annual reproductive cycle. Hatcherybred fish condition was generally better than that of wild-sourced fish as a consequence of readily available food resources and environmental conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the semen quality of 2 indigenous Vietnamese chicken breeds, Dong Tao and Ho, and to assess their reproductive potential for breeding and conservation programs. Semen samples were collected from 10 roosters of each breed and analyzed for macroscopic and microscopic traits. The results indicated that both breeds exhibited semen quality within acceptable physiological ranges. Mean semen volume was 0.47 mL in Dong Tao and 0.48 mL in Ho roosters; pH values were 7.47 and 7.42, respectively. I have mentioned previously the breeding categories that are available to observers in eBird checklists. This database is becoming more comprehensive and useful, and I encourage observers to use this eBird feature.

Usefulness of Merlin-derived checklists continues to be an issue. As an example, Merlin seems to love White-winged Doves; there were 52 undocumented Merlin reports of this species this summer, no doubt some correctly identified and acceptable if observers had taken a minute to add even minimal observation details to support Merlin’s identifications.

The functions and methods of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee (NOURC) are described in its bylaws (NOURC 2010). The committee’s purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. In Nebraska, the Common Raven was likely widespread prior to 1900, being codistributed with the American Bison (Bison bison). Records in this time are spotty, but consistent. Thomas Say reported a nearly fledged brood—the only confirmed breeding record in this period—at Fort Calhoun in Washington County on May 12, 1820. A Common Raven was collected at Fort Randall, on the Missouri River just north of the modern Nebraska–South Dakota border, in the fall of 1857 during the Lieutenant Warren Expeditions. The North Coast Demersal Scalefish Resource (NCDSR) comprises ecological suites of tropical demersal fish species that occur predominantly in inshore waters (20–250 m deep) and offshore waters ( > 250 m deep) of the North Coast Bioregion (NCB). More than 60 demersal species are landed by fisheries operating in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of the NCB each year, including high-value snappers (Lutjanidae), groupers (Epinephelidae), and emperors (Lethrinidae). The objective of the study was to determine: the impact of two retail display cases, three beef muscles, and three packaging schemes on palatability traits, flavor development, lipid oxidation, objective and subjective evaluation of color stability, and microbial shelf-life. No muscle × package × case × day interactions were observed for any instrumental or panelist color evaluation (P > 0.851). No retail case effect was observed for TBARS, consumer sensory evaluation, or cook loss (P >0.05). A muscle × case × package interaction was observed for L* and b* (P< 0.05). Social connections within primate groups are continuously changing, and an individual's connectedness within their social network can have important consequences on morbidity and mortality. Here, we examined the effects of early life social experiences and age on social connectedness of captive female olive baboons (Papio anubis). Subjects included 54 mother-reared (MR) and 35 nursery-reared (NR) baboons (4.03 to 19.8 years of age). We conducted four 15-min focal observations and recorded all social interactions. For every possible dyad, we calculated total amount of time in proximity to one another and total amount of time spent grooming (in each direction), then used …

Despite increasing research on the Neotropical underground environment, anurans remain poorly understood in this habitat. It was analyzed scientific literature records of anurans in Brazilian natural caves and performed a redundancy analysis (RDA) to identify the environmental, taxonomic, geographic, geological and land-use variables that influence their cave occupancy. It was examined a total of 247 literature records, encompassing 83 species/morphospecies, which revealed distinct cave-dwelling tendencies. Some anuran species occupy caves at altitudes between 5 to 21 meters above sea level (m asl), in areas characterized by rocky outcrops and grassland. To investigate the impacts of dietary Bacillus-based probiotics and yeast-derived prebiotics on the hepatic transcriptome profile, 500 Hisex White laying hens were randomly allotted into five dietary treatments from 37 to 52 weeks of age: control; control + Bacillus subtilis; control + Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis; control + Bacillus coagulans; and control + Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cell wall. Transcriptome analysis revealed a substantial number of differentially expressed genes exclusively between the control and prebiotic groups, identifying 2221 genes (FDR ≤ 0.05), with 980 genes upregulated (log2 fold change 0.69 to 24.62) and 1241 downregulated (log2 fold change −0.74 to …

Oocyte vitrification success is highly dependent on cryoprotectant agent (CPA) choice as well as possible additives that could help preserve mitochondrial membrane potential (mMP), reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and calcium homeostasis within the cell. It is a delicate balance between levels needed for proper oocyte function and activation and levels needed to induce apoptotic pathways. The results of oocyte cryopreservation determine the eventual oocyte viability and subsequent fertilization and embryo development.

This data is about how different types of recreation impact different soil and vegetation properties related to soil carbon in Indian Creek, Bears Ears National Monument. The data was collected from May 2023 to October 2023. It contains plant functional group cover, biocrust cover and type, soil stability, and compaction data for each individual site. There are 5-7 of each site type: camping, foot trails, and motorized offroading trails, and undisturbed sites, with a total of 30 sites. It also contains the code used to analyze the raw data and the figures created.

Endangered species are increasingly used as the target species in implementing and constructing new wildlife crossing structures (WCS). Highways in South Texas fragment the landscape and result in high road mortality for endangered species such as ocelots (Leopardus pardalis, a medium-sized spotted wild cat). In response, the Texas Department of Transportation constructed nine WCS on Farm-to-Market 106 (FM 106), a road which bisects Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in Cameron County, Texas. Studies of cetacean diving behavior in multiple locations in different ocean basins allow for an assessment of variability within and among populations. We examine foraging dive behaviors of goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) and dense-beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) using data from 132 tagged whales in seven locations in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Acoustic recording tags are used to identify foraging dives by the presence of echolocation. For other tag types, foraging dives are identified based on maximum dive depth. The rare Horn of Africa buthid genus Lanzatus Kovařík, 2001, known only from Somalia and Somaliland, is recorded for the first time from Ethiopia. We describe a new species Lanzatus fuscipalpis sp. n. fully illustrated with color photographs showing its morphology, habitus, hemispermatophore, and collection sites.

New data are presented on the taxonomy and distribution of the dark species of the genus Androctonus Ehrenberg, 1828 in Morocco and Western Sahara. Three new species, A. argoubi sp. n., A. stockmanni sp. n., and A. vaneki sp. n. from Morocco are described, characterized by having metasoma I–IV ventrally punctate, a character that is well developed in A. stockmanni sp. n., and A. vaneki sp. n., and weakly developed in A. argoubi sp. n. Small Meat Processor Needs Are Similar Across Region, Jordan C. Wicks, Alexis Wivell, Thomas Archibald, David Gerrard

This needs-based assessment provides insight into the challenges of small meat processors in two regions of the US. On-line surveys were provided to processors and despite regional differences, data show approximately 70% of processors in each state find retention of skilled labor the greatest challenge in maintaining current levels of operation and impede future growth. These findings suggest educational and certification programing may help improve small processor viability and mitigate local food security concerns. Given the disparity in animal production and livestock availability between these diverse states but similarity in responses, we posit this information is translatable across the US.

Economic analyses were performed to determine the feasibility of retaining weaned fall-born calves on summer annual pastures (a monoculture, a 3-species mixture, or a 12-species mixture). Average daily gain was reduced by 0.3 lbs/day in calves grazing the complex mixture in two out of three years. Enterprise budgeting illustrated that retaining calves on summer annual forages was not economical. Two-way net return tables indicated that this scenario would only be profitable when cattle prices are high and pasture establishment costs are low. Extension educators should be sure to emphasize the economic risks when discussing these systems.

The Southwestern US and northern Mexico continue to serve as ideal regions to elucidate the suite of ecological and evolutionary processes influencing lineage diversification. The complex geological history of arid North America, coupled with paleoclimate change during the Pleistocene and diverse ecoregions makes a multipronged approach to hypothesis testing necessary. We combine thousands of loci from a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approach along with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from the Greater Earless Lizard (Cophosaurus texanus) to examine diversity and test for cryptic population structure. Two additives, rosemary oil and a commercial herbal product (HP; AROTEC-G) containing garlic essential oil, carvacrol and thymol were investigated for their potential to reduce the parasitic burden in yellowtail kingfish (YTK; Seriola lalandi) infected with Zeuxapta seriolae. Naturally infected fish were fed diets supplemented with either 2.5 mL.kg−1 rosemary oil or two concentrations of HP (5 and 10 g.kg−1) for 20 days. In this study, the relationship between the Growth Differentiation Factor-9 (GDF9) gene polymorphism and birth weight, as well as weights on days 30, 60, 90, was investigated in Akkaraman lambs, one of the indigenous sheep breeds of Türkiye. For this purpose, a total of 314 lambs were genotyped by PCR-RFLP method for the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) c.260G>A in the GDF9 gene. While GG and GA genotypes were observed in the studied breed, the AA genotype was not observed. The results showed that Akkaraman lambs were in Hardy–Weinberg (H–W) equilibrium for the GDF9-c.260G>A polymorphism (p < 0.05). In this study, a significant association was observed between GDF9-HhaI polymorphism and 30th day weight and 60th day weight in Akkaraman lambs. When the animals were analyzed according to birth type, it was observed that this factor was associated with birth weight, as well as weights on days 30, 60, and 90.
