Bush Lupine Mortality, Altered Resource Availability, And Alternative Vegetaion States, John L. Maron, Robert L. Jefferies
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Nitrogen-fixing plants, by altering the availability of soil N, potentially facilitate plant invasion. Here we describe how herbivore-driven mortality of a native N-fixing shrub, bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus), increases soil N and light availability, which promotes invasion by introduced grasses to the detriment of a native plant community.
Soils under live and dead lupine stands contained large amounts of total N, averaging 3.14 mg N/g dry mass of soil (398 g/m2) and 3.45 mg N/g dry mass of soil (438 g/m2), respectively, over four years. In contrast, similar lupine-free soil was low in N …

Native Vegetation Handbook For The Shire Of Kondinin, Bec Ryan
Bulletins 4000 -
This booklet provides land managers with information relating to the natural resources of the Shire of Kondinin, including the landscape, geology, soils, drainage systems, native flora and fauna. Information about native flora and vegetation has been drawn from a variety of sources, including surveys that estimated the distribution of plant communities prior to clearing, recent surveys of privately owned remnants, herbarium collections, surveys of nature reserves and roadside surveys. Some of the problems relating to the management of these resources within the shire and ideas or community initiatives to solve these problems are also discussed. It is hoped that this …

Bulletin 4357 - Fertilisers For Pastures On Sandy Soils Of The Swan Coastal Plain, K. W. Angell
Bulletins 4000 -
When newly cleared for agriculture, the sandy soils of the Swan Coastal Plain were acutely deficient in phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and the trace elements copper ( Cu) and zinc (Zn) and sometimes molybdenum (Mo). Phosphorus deficiency was overcome by applying single superphosphate. Trace element deficiencies were overcome by adding Cu, Zn and Mo to superphosphate during manufacture, allowing P, Cu, Zn and Mo to be applied to the pasture in the one operation.
It was subsequently found that low sulphur (S) and potassium (K) were limiting production and persistence of subterranean clover-based pastures on the sandy soils of the …

Between 1977 and 1988, 132 juvenile whooping cranes were color-marked on the breeding grounds; of these 37 were accounted for during the winter of 1998-99. Five color-marked cranes were observed during the fall migration. All sightings of color-marked cranes during migration are maintained at the Grand Island office.
One hundred eighty-one cranes began the 1998 spring migration. Forty-nine nests were confirmed on the breeding grounds. Forty-seven chicks were located during June surveys, and the surveys during August determined that at least 24 chicks were surviving. Under optimum conditions about 2,054 birds were expected to arrive at Aransas last fall. The …

The 1998-99 Nebraska Christmas Bird Count Summary, Stephen J. Dinsmore
Nebraska Bird Review
The 1998-99 Christmas Bird Count (CBC) period included eight counts in Nebraska. Counts were scattered statewide, but most effort was in the eastern half of the state. I know of at least one additional count (Branched Oak Lake) that was run this year, but not submitted.
In the following discussion, I have attempted to discuss what I believe are the more important aspects of this year's CBC period. This includes my general impressions about some of the commoner species, mention of rarities, notable misses, and other topics.

First we want to correct a rather obvious error in the Summer Field Report. We reported 3 pairs of Cordilleran Flycatchers at Neale Woods at the eastern edge of the state, which would be a remarkable range expansion. These birds were actually in Monroe Canyon, Sioux Co, where they were supposed to be. Another error involved 5 Brewer's Sparrows we said were in Sioux Co; these were actually Brewer's Blackbirds.
Several contributors now report to us by email. We urge observers to forward their email addresses; if we have questions on their reports, communication would be easy! Reports and comments …

Corythalia Canosa (Araneae: Salticidae) Reassigned To Anasaitis, G. B. Edwards
Insecta Mundi
Four species of Corythalia C.L.Koch 1851 were reported by Richman & Cutler (1978) to occur in North America north of Mexico. Subsequently, one of these four species, C. delicatula Gertsch & Mulaik 1936, was synonymized with Euophrys diminuta (Banks 1896) (Edwards 1980). Of the three remaining species, only two species can validly be placed in the genus. These are C. conspecta (Peckham & Peckham 1896) and C. opirna (Peckham & Peckham 1885), the northernmost species in the genus, both with reported distributions ranging from Central America to Arizona.

The Occurrence Of The Genus Maruina (Diptera: Psychodidae) In Texas, David E. Bowles
Insecta Mundi
I recently collected immature stages of the aquatic dipteran genus Maruina from a spring-run located in the Big Bend region of western Texas. The spring-run, Ojito Adentro, is located in the Bofecillos Canyon Drainage, Presidio County, Texas at N29° 29'27.7", W 104° 3' 45.6" (measured with a Garmin GPS40 global positioning system). I collected specimens from the wetted vertical surface of a large boulder in the stream channel. A thin film of water flowed over this boulder creating a madicolous habitat. The habitat was thoroughly described in Sites and Bowles (1995) and Bowles et al. (1999). No adults were collected.

Nomenclatural And Systematic Changes In The Neotropical Caddisflies (Insecta: Trichoptera), Oliver S. Flint Jr, Ralph W. Holzenthal, Steven C. Harris
Insecta Mundi
Recent work on a catalog of the Neotropical caddisflies has resulted in the recognition of the need to make numerous lectotype designations, new names for homonyms, specific and generic synonymies, transfers of species between genera and genera between families, and placement of many long ignored names of Muller and others. Rationales are presented for all actions, many of which had been known for years as the result of examination of types, but no opportunity had arisen to publish them, others became apparent as a result of the cataloging. This opportunity is taken to present all of those known to us …

First Notice Of Therion From South America With Description Of Two New Species From Argentina And Bolivia (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Charles C. Porter
Insecta Mundi
Abstract: Therion Curtis (Ichneumonidae: Anomalinae) has a nearly cosmopolitan geographic distribution but has not previously been recorded from South America. In most Therion the tarsal claws are simple or have only a few inconspicuous teeth near the base. The new species described herein are distinctive, therefore, because they have the tarsal claws conspicuously pectinate over at least 0.8 the distance from base to apex. Therion ranti n. sp. from Cordoba and Mendoza Provinces of Argentina may be recognized by its almost uniformly red mesosoma and basally elevated clypeus. Cave-Dwelling Nesticidae (Araneae) In The Southeastern United States: New Distribution Records And Notes On Their Bionomics, Will Reeves
Insecta Mundi
The Nesticidae are a worldwide family of small, sedentary spiders frequently found in leaf litter, debris, houses, and caves. The genus Gaucelmus is found only in the Americas, primarily in the Neotropics. Nesticus, a Holarctic genus, is well represented in the Appalachian Mountains by obligate cave-dwelling species (Gertsch 1984). The genus Eidmannella is an American genus recently introduced by humans to Europe and Hawaii (Gertsch 1984). The natural history, including fecundity and prey types, of cave spiders are poorly documented. Here I report a range extension of Gaucelmus augustinus Keyserling and natural-history information for N. georgia Gertsch and N. …

Responses In Ovulation Rate, Embryonal Survival, And Litter Traits In Swine To 14 Generations Of Selection To Increase Litter Size, Rodger K. Johnson, Merlyn K. Nielsen, David S. Casey
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Eleven generations of selection for increased index of ovulation rate and embryonal survival rate, followed by three generations of selection for litter size, were practiced. Laparotomy was used to count corpora lutea and fetuses at 50 d of gestation. High-indexing gilts, approximately 30%, were farrowed. Sons of dams in the upper 10% of the distribution were selected. Selection from Generations 12 to 14 was for increased number of fully formed pigs; replacements were from the largest 25% of the litters. A randomly selected control line was maintained. Responses at Generation 11 were approximately 7.4 ova and 3.8 fetuses at 50 …

Data Integration By Describing Sources With Constraint Databases, Xun Cheng, Guozhu Dong, Tzekwan Lau, Jianwen Su
Kno.e.sis Publications
We develop a data integration approach for the efficient evaluation of queries over autonomous source databases. The approach is based on some novel applications and extensions of constraint database techniques. We assume the existence of a global database schema. The contents of each data source are described using a set of constraint tuples over the global schema; each such tuple indicates possible contributions from the source. The “source description catalog” (SDC) of a global relation consists of its associated constraint tuples. Such a method of description is advantageous since it is flexible to add new sources and to modify existing …

Efficient Mining Of Partial Periodic Patterns In Time Series Database, Jiawei Han, Guozhu Dong, Yiwen Yin
Kno.e.sis Publications
Partial periodicity search, i.e., search for partial periodic patterns in time-series databases, is an interesting data mining problem. Previous studies on periodicity search mainly consider finding full periodic patterns, where every point in time contributes (precisely or approximately) to the periodicity. However, partial periodicity is very common in practice since it is more likely that only some of the time episodes may exhibit periodic patterns.
We present several algorithms for efficient mining of partial periodic patterns, by exploring some interesting properties related to partial periodicity, such as the Apriori property and the max-subpattern hit set property, and by shared mining …
