Beach morning glory, Ipomoea imperati (Vahl) Griseb. = I. stolonifera (Cirillo) Gmelin is a pantropical, prostrate vine that is an important pioneer species in the backshore of coastal beaches of six continents and many islands. The landward distribution of beach morning glory is influenced by dispersal and competition, and its seaward distribution is determined by the physical environment acting through movement of seeds away from the water and high seedling mortality in the backshore. It is occasionally found in disturbed sites on barrier islands well inland from the shore. Beach morning glory tolerates low levels of soil nutrients, sand scouring, …

Chondrocranial And Oral Morphology Of Leptodactylid Larvae, William Hagood Turner

Master's Theses

I focused my research on Leptodactylidae in order to determine the usefulness of chondrocranial and internal oral characters in systematic and phylogenetic studies of this anuran family. To achieve this goal, I examined the chondrocrania of eight species of the Leptodactylinae: Adenomera marmorata, Edalorhina perezi, Limnomedusa macroglossa, Physalaemus gracilis, P. henselii, P. pustulosus, Pleurodema brachyops, and P. tucumana. Furthermore, I analyzed and described the internal oral anatomy of Physalaeum us gracilis, P. henselii, and Limnomedusa macroglossa and the skeletogenesis of P. gracilis and P. pustulosus. Subsequently, I integrated these data with all available data on the larval chondrocrania and internal …

Phylogenetic Relationships In Nuphar (Nymphaeaceae): Evidence From Morphology, Chloroplast Dna, And Nuclear Ribosomal Dna, Donald Padgett, D. H. Les, G. E. Crow

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The genus Nuphar consists of yellow-flowered waterlilies and is widely distributed in north-temperate bodies of water. Despite regular taxonomic evaluation of these plants, no explicit phylogenetic hypotheses have been proposed for the genus. We investigated phylogenetic relationships in Nuphar using morphology and sequences of the chloroplast gene matK and of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Two major lineages within Nuphar are consistently resolved with the morphological and molecular data sets. One lineage comprises New World taxa and the other represents a primarily Old World lineage. Relationships within the major lineages were poorly resolved by morphology …

Morphology, Ultrastructure, And Function Of Extrafloral Nectaries In Three Species Of Caesalpiniaceae, Lenore T. Durkee, Matthew H. Haber, Lisa Dorn, Ann Remington

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Light and electron microscopy reveal that the morphologically well-differentiated petiolar nectaries of Chamaecrista fasciculata, Senna hepecarpa, and S. marilandica have an unusually simple anatomy consisting of an epidermis immediately subtended by a mass of small, loosely-packed parenchyma cells. Vascular strands from the petiolar bundles enter the nectary and terminate as phloem within or near this parenchyma. In mature, secreting nectaries, the cuticle of the epidermis extends between the epidermal cells and into the nectary parenchyma, where it occupies, but does not occlude, much of the free space of this tissue. The cutin is not found below the level …

An Investigation On The Morphology, Anatomy And Ecology Oforiganum Onites L.1, Ahmet Gönüz, Bilkan Özörgücü Jan 1999

An Investigation On The Morphology, Anatomy And Ecology Oforiganum Onites L.1, Ahmet Gönüz, Bilkan Özörgücü

Turkish Journal of Botany

Possible variations in the morphology, anatomy, ecology and phenology of Origanum onites L. ( Lamiaceae/Labitae) in rela-tion to altitudinal variations was studied together with the differences in etheric oil content. A decrease in the stem and lower leaf lengths was observed compared with an increase in the cortical area and vascular tissues in parallel with altitudinal increases. The number and size of stomata also varied with this factor. Etheric oil content was found to be different in relation to altitude.
