Weaning weights from nine sets of Angus field data from three regions of the United States were analyzed. Six animal models were used to compare two approaches to account for an environmental dam-offspring covariance and to investigate the effects of sire × herd-year interaction on the genetic parameters. Model 1 included random direct and maternal genetic, maternal permanent environmental, and residual effects. Age at weaning was a covariate. Other fixed effects were age of dam and a herd-year-management-sex combination. Short height and high yield per unit energy in controlled environments are essential to the success of a food production system for spaceflight. Temperature and light quality can be manipulated in controlled environments to reduce plant height and increase yield. Although the effects of temperature on height and yield are well studied at ambient CO2, temperature effects at elevated CO2 with a hydroponic root zone are not well characterized. To study the effect of substrate addition on short term bacterial population dynamics and species composition in seawater mesocosms were maintained with water collected off Scripps Pier (La Jolla, California USA) Protein enrichment (BSA) triggered a dynamic response from the microbial food web, whereas enrichment with starch had no effect. Estimates of genetic parameters resulting from various analytical models for birth weight (BWT, n = 4,155), 205-d weight (WWT, n = 3,884), and 365-d weight (YWT, n = 3,476) were compared. Data consisted of records for Line 1 Hereford cattle selected for postweaning growth from 1934 to 1989 at ARSUSDA, Miles City, MT. Twelve models were compared. Model 1 included fixed effects of year, sex, age of dam; covariates for birth day and inbreeding coefficients of animal and of dam; and random animal genetic and residual effects. Weaning weights from nine parental breeds and three composites were analyzed to estimate variance due to grandmaternal genetic effects and to compare estimates for variance due to maternal genetic effects from two different models. Number of observations ranged from 794 to 3,465 per population. Number of animals in the pedigree file ranged from 1,244 to 4,326 per population. Two single-trait animal models were used to obtain estimates of covariance components by REML using an average information method. In this study, the soybean, sorghum, peanut and wheat straw were used as culture media for Pleurotus florida. The shortest period for mycelium growth on soybean straw was 10.8 days; basidiocarp formation period, the first, second and third harvesting periods were determined as; 28.2, 33.6, 47.2 and 63.8, days respectively as the shortes periods found with peonut straw; 23.2, 59.5, 63.5, 75.2 and 94.0 days respectively, as the longest periods found with sorghum straw. In this study, the populations structure, growth and reproduction characteristics of 1091 Leuciscus cephalus orientalis from the Yagan Region of River Aras between December 1995 and November 1997 were investigated monthly. The age composition of this species ranged between I and VIII. Individuals were composed of 48.85% males and 51.15% females. Female individuals attained greater size and age than males. In this study, the growth properties of pike (Esox lucius L., 1758) in Dam Lake Kesikköprü between April 1995 and March 1996 were examined. In the examined samples, the age of females and males ranged from I-V and I-IV respectively. The population was composed of 55 % males and 45' % females. The forked length and weight of females and males varied from 18,7 to 49,4 cm., from 265 to 1100 g, and from 16,5 to 53,0 cm., from 260 to 1140 g., respectively. In this study, the effect of water on growth (wet weight gain), food consumption, feces quantity, digestive activity and glycogen level of Gryllus bimaculatus female adults was investigated by doing the experiments of feeding and starvation. Wheat bran was given for feeding. All parameters were found to be significantly higher in insects feeding with water than those feeding without water. A significant difference did not occur in mean wet weight and glycogen level in insects either feeding without water or starved for one week. This study investigated the selenium (Se) requirements of three phytoplankton species which commonly bloom in southern Australian estuaries. The present study showed that the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham had an obligate requirement for Se (IV) in culture. After two transfers (~ 4 weeks ≈ 7 generations) in Se-deficient seawater medium, this phytoplankton species exhibited a decline in growth rate (25%) and biomass yield (90%), while complete cessation of cell division occurred under prolonged (8 weeks ≈ 12 generations) Se starvation. One-year old rope grown mussels ( Mytilus edulis L.) were held in experimental lantern nets at 2 m and 6 m depths in Loch Kishorn on the west coast of Scotland. Growth, mortality and shell morphology were monitored from May 1993 to August 1994. Water temperature, salinity, transparency and food availability were also determined. These showed a clear seasonal cycle, in consequence, growth of mussels was relatively rapid from May to November and very slow during the rest of the year. This study evaluated the ability of Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) to balance the daily photosynthetic deficit by mobilization of carbon reserves stored in below-ground tissues during a period of extreme winter light limitation. A quantitative understanding of the mobilization process and its limitations is essential to the development of robust models predicting minimum light levels required to maintain healthy seagrass populations. Growth performances, daily food consumption and feed conversion ratios of rainbow (Onchorynchus mykiss) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) reared as single and mixed species were compared. During the experimental period, which lasted for about a growing season (December - June, 217 days), mean % weight increment of single species brook trout group were maximum (from 18.2 to 165.6 g), followed by mixed rainbow (26.8 to 241.6 g) and brook trout (17.0 to 151.8 g), and single species rainbow trout (27.5 to 207.6 g). This research was conducted to determine the effect of different feeds on the growth rate of mullet juveniles (M. auratus R. 1810). Juveniles with a initial mean weight of 14.15 g and 14.71 g were feed a semi-moist diet (%50 trout viscera + %25 soybean meal + %25 high quality wheat bran) and carp pellets for a period of 60 days in marine cages. At the end of the experiment, final average weights were determined as 28.83± 0.6 g and 22.04±0.6 g have been obtained, respectively. In this study, biological characteristics i.e. sex and age distribution, growth (in length and weight), growth rates, and condition factor of sprat (Sprattus sprattus phalericus) from the Eastern Blak Sea coast have been examined. The percentage of females and males was 57.53 % and 42.47 % out of 372 specimens which ranged between age group I and IV. Age groups II and III were also predominant in the catch composition. In this research, sex and age compositions, age-length, age-weight, length-weight relations, condition factors were investigated on 674 chub (Leuciscus cephalus L., 1758) specimens caught from Lake Tödürge, Sivas between April and November 1994. The age composition of L. cephalus specimens were between I-VII years and sex percentages were calculated as 68.25 % for females and 31.75 % for males. Determined minimum and maximum forklength values were 53 and 299 mm; weights were 1.5 and 347.1 g. A total of 506 Leuciscus cephalus were caught in the Çıldır Lake-Ardahan from May to December 1991. The age composition of L.cephalus specimens were between II-VI years and III years olds dominated with a rate of 67.26%. In the stock the percentages were calculated as 73.00% for males and 27.00% for females.
