Notes On A New Mealybug (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Pseudococcidae) Pest In Florida And The Caribbean: The Papaya Mealybug, Paracoccus Marginatus Williams And Granara De Willink, Douglass R. Miller, Douglas J. Williams, Avas B. Hamon

Insecta Mundi

Paracoccus marginatus Williams and Granara de Willink, here called the papaya mealybug, was first detected in the United States in Hollywood, Florida in 1998. By the end of 1998 it was found in four localities in the state and has since spread to nine localities in five counties. This mealybug appears to have moved through the Caribbean area since its 1994 detection in the Dominican Republic. The pest is reported to cause serious damage to tropical fruit, especially papaya, and has been detected most frequently, in Florida, on hibiscus. It is now known from Antigua, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, …

Distribution And Inhibition Of Esterases In Various Body Tissues Of Susceptible And Resistant German Cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), No-Joong Park, Shripat T. Kamble Jan 1999

Distribution And Inhibition Of Esterases In Various Body Tissues Of Susceptible And Resistant German Cockroaches (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), No-Joong Park, Shripat T. Kamble

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The distribution and inhibition of esterase activity among body of the resistant Crawford and susceptible CSMA strains of male German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), were evaluated with α- and β-naphthyl esters using a spectrophotometric assay and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The esterase activities in the Crawford strain were significantly higher than in the CSMA strain in most tissues except midgut and male genitalia, where the activities were similar. In both strains, isozyme a was dominant in the brain and fat body and isozymes c and d were more abundant in the midgut; but in addition to isozyme a, isozyme …

Distribution And Abundance Of The Octopods Eledone Cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) And Eledone Moschata (Lamarck, 1799) (Cephalopoda: Octopoda) In The Aegean Sea, Alp Salman, Tuncer Katağan Jan 1999

Distribution And Abundance Of The Octopods Eledone Cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) And Eledone Moschata (Lamarck, 1799) (Cephalopoda: Octopoda) In The Aegean Sea, Alp Salman, Tuncer Katağan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Distributions and relative abundances of the Eledone cirrhosa and Eledone moschata species exist in Aegean Sea were analized by considering the seasonal data obtained in bottom trawl between 1991 and 1993. According to these result, it was determined that both species have different distribution features in Aegean Sea, both vertically and horizontally. Depending on depth it's evident that E.cirrhosa in various size prefers the stratum in different depth. Whereas E.moschata distributes relatively in the depth of 0-100 m. So regional, seasonal and vertical catch per unit effort (CPUE) of both species were calculated, and the regions, seasons and depths having …

Distribution And Persistence Of Phyllachora Species On Poaceae In Iowa, A. C. Gabel, L. H. Tiffany Jan 1999

Distribution And Persistence Of Phyllachora Species On Poaceae In Iowa, A. C. Gabel, L. H. Tiffany

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Phytlachora spp. on Poaceae were collected to determine species present, grass hosts and distribution in Iowa. From 1959-1996 the fungus was collected 240 times from 67 different sites in 35 counties. Seven species of Phytlachora were collected on 25 species from 13 genera of grasses. P. graminis was collected 89 times from 43 sites on four species of Agropyron, two species of Calamagrostis, three species of Elymus, Hystrix patula, Panicum virgatum, and Setaria glauca. Seventy-two specimens of P. luteo-maculata on Andropogon gerardii or Schiziichyrium scoparium were collected from 30 sites. The study included 20 collections of P. cynodontis on Bouteloua …

The Taxonomic Status Of Triturus Vulgaris(Linnaeus, 1758) Populations In Western Anatolia, Turkey, Kurtuluş Olgun, İbrahi̇m Baran, Cemal Varol Tok Jan 1999

The Taxonomic Status Of Triturus Vulgaris(Linnaeus, 1758) Populations In Western Anatolia, Turkey, Kurtuluş Olgun, İbrahi̇m Baran, Cemal Varol Tok

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A total of 179 (97 males, 82 females) Triturus vulgaris specimens collected during the breeding season from Western Anatolia (Efes, Ayvacık, Lapseki, Karacabey, Gemlik) and European Turkey (Bolayır) was examined. The morphological and the statistical evaluations showed that the Western Anatolian (except Efes) and the Thrace populations are similar. The West Anatolian populations, therefore, should be included in the nominate subspecies, T.v. vulgaris. The Efes specimens were found to be different from specimens of Ayvacik, Lapseki and Gemlik especially in terms of body measurements. The explanation of the taxonomic status of the Efes population will be possible with the material …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Investigations into the composition, spatial and temporal distribution of the Black Sea zooplankton were reviewed in context with its historical development. The review comprises the main zooplankton studies published by the riparian countries of the Black Sea beginning with the earliest faunistic publications in the 1860s and 1870s up to the recent multinational ecosystem investigations carried out within the framework of the NATO-TU-Black Sea Project. The reviewed material covers a wide subject range of zooplankton investigations from descriptive studies to distribution and the production mechanisms in the ecosystem. The main findings of recently performed large scale investigations into the horizontal …
